From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2009-09-17:

"Managers may truly believe that, without their unremitting efforts, all work would quickly grind to a halt. That is not my impression. While I encountered some cynics and plenty of people who had learned to budget their energy, I never met an actual slacker or, for that matter, a drug addict or thief. On the contrary, I was amazed and sometimes saddened by the pride people took in jobs that rewarded them so meagerly, either in wages or in recognition. Often, in fact, these people experienced management as an obstacle to getting the job done as it should be done. Waitresses chafed at managers' stinginess toward the customers; housecleaners resented the time constraints that sometimes made them cut corners; retail workers wanted the floor to be beautiful, not cluttered with excess stock as management required. Left to themselves, they devised systems of cooperation and work sharing; when there was a crisis, they rose to it. In fact, it was often hard to see what the function of management was, other than to exact obeisance." -- Barbara Ehrenreich, in Nickel and Dimed.

09:49 pm - And now I have an Electric Prunes song stuck in my head

I just woke up from watching tomorrow night's episode of Castle. If the middle third of the show tomorrow plays out like what I just saw in my dream, that'll be especially freaky, since partway through, the cast (except the new boss) all changed to the cast of Bones while still being mostly the Castle plot. But at least I'd get to find out how the episode from my dream ends.

(What woke me up was coming back to the room after getting up during a commercial break, and finding potting soil spilled all over the computer. Or rather, trying to figure out how it got there, deciding that it must have been a plant-watering mishap, and trying to figure out whether water had gotten into the computer, was what woke me. Only after I was awake did I finally notice that the house had had the wrong number of bathrooms and a whole extra wing in the dream. Nonetheless, it was confusing to discover afterward that it wasn't even ten o'clock yet ... nor Monday.)

Anyhow, I think I'm awake now ... At least when I got up to pee again because dream-micturation didn't actually empty my bladder (on the whole, let's count that as a good thing, never mind the "what, I have to go again?" confusion that sometimes results on waking) the bathroom was in the correct location for this house. And yes, I just checked the next-episode synopsis and it doesn't match my dream. But maybe I should check the next episode of Bones as well, just in case.

(I wasn't really feeling well enough to go out this afternoon; went out anyhow and came back beyond-exhausted.)
