At the age of 17, Hayden Wyler began having nightmares. The timing coincided with the discovery that she could make small hurts better. She could heal cuts, scrapes and burns in others as long as they were small, and take away mild headaches with a touch.
It was odd enough that her overstressed father, still dealing with the loss of his wife and Hayden’s mother several years before, decided to put her into therapy to ‘cure’ her.
The therapist, Richard Hammermill, a noted psychologist making a name for himself helping children adjust to unusual abilities and in some cases, hide them. A man with psychological problems of his own along with some psychic talent, it took a few sessions with Hayden to realize that once he’d shaken her hand and she’d left the office, he felt better. It didn’t really strike him what was happening until he noticed halfway through one of their sessions that paper cuts he’d given himself before her arrival were healed. When questioned, Hayden confessed and said that her father didn’t like to talk about it.
Richard Hammermill didn’t mind talking about it at all. He promised her father that he would train Hayden to use and hide her power, and took her in to mentor her. He then proceeded to exploit her talent with himself as the focus. Over the next five years he would amass millions of dollars helping the rich beat Fate. Need a transplant? $250,000 will heal the one you have. Cancer? What’s your life worth to you?
In public, the man was seemingly benevolent and kind to her. In private, he was an entirely different person. Hayden’s father seemed more relieved that she was adjusting to her new circumstances and urged her to stay with the therapy. She couldn’t bear to disappoint him, so she simply adjusted to the situation and did her best, with mild acts of vengeance against the doctor to relieve her own frustrations. To this day, she won’t talk about years spent as Dr. Hammermill’s favorite patient.
When Hayden turned 23, Dr. Hammermill began to market their services to the superhero community. Hayden’s father also died of cancer, and with him her only reason to continue working with Dr. Hammermill. Grieving over her father and his refusal to let her heal him, she quit and blackmailed the doctor with the threat of exposing his racket. Once the money was transferred to her own accounts, she cut all ties with him.
Hayden still could not heal effectively on her own. After requesting assistance from the hero community in exchange for her services, she was introduced to someone who could fill the prism role to her talent. Jacob had an immeasurable limit of prism ability, was closer to her own age, more volatile than Richard in some ways but never cruel to her. With his help, she regained herself and began to put her life on track. In return, she helped to level off his emotions and urges, and counteracted the effects of his substance abuse. For two very different people, they found a balance between their abilities for a greater good. They formed bonds that were not the healthiest and in some ways were more binding than a marriage.
For nearly ten years, they worked well as a team. With Hayden to heal the effects of his substance abuse, Jacob reached for greater heights of drug and alcohol use. No matter what he took, how much or what shape he was in, Hayden was able to heal him because he could take any amount of power she poured through the focus he provided. Rather than trying to deserve her attention or form any sort of healthy bond, Jacob believed he was owed the healing as his pay for their shared ‘job’. He preferred to spend his time in Los Angeles pursing his next fix and shacking up with a series increasingly pitiful women.
When his mind was affected to the point he could no longer hold a focus, he reached the edge and she couldn’t bring him back. His untimely death left her without more than a partner and occasional companion. It left her without a purpose.
Hayden used a portion of the money to buy an old farmhouse on twenty five acres in the foothills of Salinas Valley near Paso Robles, CA, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The two story farmhouse was renovated to her specifications. The luxurious master suite takes the entire second floor and includes a large skylight over much of the bedroom. The first floor holds the country kitchen with adjoining family room, two bedrooms with a shared full bath, a separate office and library.
The grounds include a barn doing double duty as storage and a garage, a kitchen vegetable garden, a flower and herb garden, two green houses, one for heirloom flowers, one to grow seeds and cuttings given or sent to her from around the world, a small apple orchard, four small one room cottages tucked into the property corners for visitors and teammates who need a break, and a pond that she keeps cleared for swimming. The whole is powered by solar power with electrical backup.

Gardening, cooking, motorcycles (she’s speed demon), entertaining on large and small scales. She is a voracious reader and loves to be read to when the opportunity arises.
Personality:
Hayden is a bit of a scatterbrain with the tendency to drift when people are talking about politics, religion or economics. She has a generous, open spirit that will take in lost animals, friends and teammates needing a break. She is as likely to dance naked in the rain as she is to settled down with a book on a rainy afternoon. Sexually open with those who interest her and return her interest. She hasn’t lacked for a sexual partner once she discovered she could use unfocused energy during sex to heighten the experience.
Pet: Charlie, a large black mutt rescued as a puppy. Normally a dopey, happy dog, he is very protective of his mistress and stays close to her when she’s outside. He has the run of the property and sounds the alarm whenever someone arrives. Hayden can tell who it is by the sound of Charlie’s barking. Charlie hates Jacob and will growl at him whenever the man is on the property. Jacob has been bitten twice.

When time and duties permit, Hayden volunteers in children's wards at hospitals. There have been no great miracles, but the percentage of children who make it through treatment for serious illnesses with fewer side effects is better than the national average.
