I agree. I don't feel super strongly about it, it won't OMG wreck the site for me, but I do prefer the current style for exactly this reason...

... but curiously I had the opposite impression when considering just the two proposed new styles -- that third column made the second feel even more cluttered than the first, which already feels more cluttered than the current one. I guess I can see the "more organized" aspect, since there's another dimension to organize stuff in, but it does pack the screen tighter.
And I don't know whether this is a factor or not, but style 2 is not as nice in Lynx as style 1 or the current style (yeah, I use a text browser from time to time), and I wonder how well it'll scale to small-screen devices such as PDAs and cell phones.
