| Jeanette Helen Roussel was born into an old-money family in small-town Tennessee. She grew up on what had been a plantation a hundred years ago, with both of her parents and a younger sister Annabelle. Little Jeannie was a bossy spitfire from day one, determined to get what she wanted - and there was always something. There was always potential for improvement. Her family was rich, but not particularly powerful, so Jeanette went out to look for some power. Her sister Annabelle was her faithful lackey right up until Jeanette graduated from high school (as class president), content to follow along in her sister's shadow. Jeanette embarked on a career, choosing law as her field. She went to Vanderbilt University and achieved two degrees from there. Meanwhile, her sister got married straight out of high school and started having children, perfectly fine with the simpler kind of life. Jeanette, on the other hand, didn't have time for relationships. She was working her way up to state prosecutor, and crushing anybody who stood in her way. In the midst of her crusade, she did find Jack McCarthy though, a detective in the police force at the time. She saw in him a great deal of potential but zero ambition, and decided to take him to the top with her. The two of them have been married for fifteen years. She ran for South Carolina Senator against incumbent Peter Kelly in November 2008, won, and took office in January 2009. Her methods of getting there haven't been particularly orthodox, but the ends justified the means, in her book. Her husband Jack is now chief of police and they live in a large house in Charleston. |
