Day 1 of 5. Pictures soon. [Mar. 24th, 2009|12:01 pm]
[A Bit of the Old Ludwig Van |Eminem - Crack a Bottle]

I left Sunday night, and took the 9:50 flight out of New York. The flight was about 6 hours, which was manageable. No one sat next to me on the plane, which was great. I had plenty of room to stretch out and relax, even though I barely slept. It was absolutely beautiful watching the sun rise over Ireland as we flew in. I wish I had a picture of it. We landed at like, 7:45, and I was out of the airport by 8:15, after going through customs and worrying for about 10 minutes my luggage had been lost. I caught a cab to the Marino Institute of Education, which is were Andrew and Conor were staying. They were still out of the city, I think up in Belfast, and weren't getting back until later that night. I checked my bags at reception, and decided to go exploring, since the rooms wouldn't be ready to check into until around lunch time. I went to find cigarettes, since the carton I had bought, along with the litre of Jameson whiskey, were in my bag at the school. I finally found a store, and bought cigarettes and soda, and kept walking around. I walked down by the water, which was beautiful. The weather Monday, and all week, honestly, was perfect. Never too cold, but not exactly hot. Definitely not how it is in New York. On my way back towards the school, and old lady asked me to help her cross the street, which I did lol. She was really nice. She worked by the school, so I walked with her till she left. I told her I was a criminal justice major, so we had a discussion on the legal systems of our respective countries. It was really entertaining.

After she left, I kept walking in the opposite direction, making a right turn at the end of the road, hoping to find some food. I wandered past a hotel and another school, finding absolutely nothing. I turned back, yet again, and walked back to where I had started, and found a pub that was open for breakfast. After wandering around for about three hours, food was heaven. I got the breakfast buffet type thing they had, which was eggs, bacon, sausage, pudding, toast, and something else that was pretty tasty, and tea. The owner of the pub actually sat with me for a few minutes, bringing over a newspaper and getting me caught up on current affairs in Ireland. The hospitality and amiability of the people over there was incredible.

Once I finished breakfast, I headed back to the school, since it was around noon. I checked into a room, put my bags down, put my headphones on, and crashed. After walking around for three hours, my legs felt dead. I was supposed to call Andrew at around 6 to meet up, but since I was passed out, I didn't. So he, Conor, and Conor's cousin, Matt, decided to wake me up by damn near kicking my door in. Ironically, I had been sitting across from Conor's cousin at the gate at the airport, and only realized it once I opened the door in my room lol. After we all greeted/hugged (lol its been three months since I've seen them, and they're two of my best friends. Hugs were in order), we went to the Off Licence, which is basically a liquor/beer store. We bought a 20 pack of (I think) LaBatt or Molson Ice, a six pack of Bulmers, and a bottle of red wine for Patty's Day on Tuesday. We brought it back to Andrew and Conor's room, then caught a bus into the City Center, which was like, downtown Dublin. We got some food at Supermac's, which is basically a high-end McDonalds. Andrew also introduced me to something I wish we had in the US: Taco Fries. It's basically what it sounds like, and a billion times more delicious. So we ate, and headed out to our first pub of the night, Doyles.

We got to the pub, and Andrew bought the first round of Guinness. Guinness Draught cans over here are pretty good, but NOTHING compares to real Irish Guinness. We hung out at the bar for a couple of rounds, after which I bought shots of Jameson for everyone. We made our way out, and moved to another pub they liked, the Stag's Head. We went into the basement, which was the more low key area of the bar, and had a couple more pints down there. I tried Bulmers, which is an Irish cider. Absolutely delicious. We had Smithwick's, as well, which was... I don't even know what it is. But it's delicious. Since it was still early, we caught a bus back to the school, since the buses stopped running at 11:30 every night, and we wanted to make sure we got back in time. Thn we walked up to where we had bought the beer before, to another pub, the Goose. It was a lot bigger than most of the other ones we went to. We wound up sitting next to a couple from... Virginia, I think, and we all drank and talked about our experiences in Ireland and all that. After two more pints, we went into the smoking room of the pub, since Andrew had Cuban cigars. In there, we engaged in an awesome political discussion, basically tearing down the Bush administration. We even got a few drunk ass Irishmen in on the discussion, too. Andrew also (jokingly) punched Matt in the face while the owner of the pub was in the room, and he got pretty pissed, and threatened to kick us out. We wound up sitting in the smoking room for about 2 hours, talking politics, before we had to leave, since the pub closed.

On the walk back to the school, Andrew and I brought back our hobby of singing the Doors while we're shitfaced. We were yelling out the lyrics to Break On Through at the top of our lungs as we stumbled through the streets of Dublin. Good times. We all got back to our rooms and crashed, maybe around 2 AM.
So that was day one. Day two will be up later. It's too long to update all in one sitting.
