The Character
Basics --

Full Name: Kevin Bram Dexter Whitby.
Gender: Very much male, thankyou.
Wand: Hazel and unicorn hair, 13.5 inches.
Birthday | Age: October 1st, 1982. Fifteen at the Battle of Hogwarts.
Blood Status: Pureblood.
Sexual Orientation | Marital Status: Heterosexual, and not in a relationship. This is not for want of trying!
Occupation: Hogwarts student, Hufflepuff house, about to start fifth year.
Appearance: Kevin is a little bit paranoid about his height, standing slightly shorter than the average male at 5'6. Not that he's very young looking - in fact, Kevin is blessed with a face that is youthful without being child-like - but he can't help but think that people might take him seriously if he was a little bit taller. He feels that this would also have the advantage of hiding the small amount of puppy fat that he has yet to shift.
Yet without realising it, Kevin actually has a reasonable amount going for him in the looks department. His body is in proportion, neither too lean or too heavy, he has rather nice blue eyes, blond hair that does what he wants it to and reasonably clear skin for a teenaged boy. Appearance wise, he's the sort of boy next door that most mothers would be delighted for their daughters to bring home, being a clean and presentable sort of young man, somewhat resembling a Muggle boy band singer.
The area in which Kevin is lacking, in terms of his physicality, is probably his sense of dress. Whilst he is not so clueless that he doesn't know how to keep the items he has chosen looking their best, if he wants to impress he usually needs a bit of help. He's the sort of boy who can be seen in mismatched socks slightly more often than usual, and isn't concerned enough with fashion to know the kinds of things that would suit him. He simply wears what he likes.

Played By: 1st choice: Hunter Parrish (see icons).

Character/Family History

Kevin was a slightly early baby - originally due to arrive on Halloween, his birth surprised his then 23 year old mother as she was doing last minute shopping for her firstborn. She says that he has similarly kept her on her toes ever since, and gave up her job as an advertising administrator at the Daily Prophet to look after her growing family. This may not have been her first choice, but she was lucky enough to have the support of her husband Richard, then 26, the then Assistant Manager of a broomstick specialist just off Diagon Alley. They had met through work three years previously, when it had been his job to arrange the company's marketing campaign, and were married before the year was out.

Being the first born, one might expect him to be bossy, especially with regard to his younger siblings - Maya was born when Kevin was three, and Liam two years later. However, the larger gap between himself and Maya meant that he has always regarded his siblings slightly from afar, and the saying "have one child and you're a parent, have more and you're a referee" in fact reflects his role as an older brother in the family. By no means indifferent to their children, Nadine and Richard simply left them to it, stopping only to intervene if any fights became physical, wishing to instill a sense of independence in their children. Despite their good intentions, Kevin achieved the independence and leadership skills, but has a slight problem with trusting new people, not wanting to form bonds with someone who will leave him. At the same time, he has always sought affection, so he was always a somewhat confused child. His friends quickly became used to his odd ways, because he always made the effort to do well with people.

Upon receiving his Hogwarts letter, and having been instilled with the Ravenclaw-Slytherin values of his parents, it was just as much a surprise to him as to them when the Sorting Hat took a little under ten seconds to place him in Hufflepuff. Even for his first couple of terms at Hogwarts, some of his classmates thought him more of a Slytherin sort, his joining of many clubs and societies being taken as an ambitious desire to some day take the lead. Kevin, however, always maintained that it was simply a desire to find his place in the world and to try new things. His above average scores in the first year classes proved that he at least had the Hufflepuff work ethic.

Described as being a pleasant but mostly unremarkable child by his teachers, Kevin sailed through most of his schooling blissfully unaware of the wider conflict going on within Hogwarts. He, unlike some other people in school, did not display hero-worship towards Harry Potter, preferring to admire those in the Hufflepuff Quidditch team instead, although he never had the courage to try out. His dorm-mates tease him that his motto should be "maybe next year", the number of times they have heard him say it.

Personality --
Patronus: Northern to the last, his patronus takes the form of a whippet - a greyhound like dog often used for racing.
Boggart: A vampire, complete with black cloak and pointed teeth dripping with blood. Somewhat ironic as his parents gave him the middle name Bram, after the author who wrote the Dracula book set partially in the town of Whitby.
Magical Strengths & Weaknesses: Kevin has always been the kind of student who favours the practical above anything else, only seeing the point of theory when it actually helps to underpin practical skills. To that end, it is only his Hufflepuff work ethic that has helped him to scrape passes in History of Magic, a subject he cannot wait to drop in sixth year. His best subjects are Charms, Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration - the latter mostly because he really, REALLY wants to study to be an animagus one day. He thinks this would be the coolest thing ever for a wizard to achieve.
Likes | Dislikes: Likes: his dog (a Beagle called Bessie), his familiar (a little owl called Fred), watching the Muggles play cricket on the village green at home in the holidays, going to Hogsmeade with his friends, and the Ballycastle Bats - a Quidditch team he chose purely for being contrary.
Dislikes: History of Magic, being teased about his lack of guts when it comes to trying out for the Quidditch team, his height, his lack of a girlfriend, and the fact that he has no idea what he wants to do for a job when he leaves Hogwarts.
Fears & Goals: Like many of his peers, he never, ever wants to see a war as bad as the war that ended on May 2nd. The thing that terrifies him most is civil conflict, the kind that separates friends from friends, family members from others, and splits groups down the middle depending on what side they take. He feels this idea is far more unsettling than one where everyone you know is on the same side.
Before the war, Kevin's only goal was to become an animagus (although he does worry that his form would take something really embarrassing, like a pigeon). Now, he is trying to think about what will be best for him and his family, and so now he wants to figure out just what job would be the best use of his talents, to be able to maintain steady employment, and to help provide for his family following the severe injury of his father (but he still really wants to be an animagus).

---------------
Most people, upon first meeting Kevin, leave the encounter thinking "eh, he's OK, I guess". He doesn't have many personality traits that are overbearing enough to leave a lasting impression. Some might say this a terrible thing, but Kevin, in a vague attempt at optimism, would tell you that a lack of an impression is better than a negative one. In fact, the Slytherin side of him would say that it is in fact advantageous, as it allows you an extra step in getting to know what someone else is like, before they get the measure of you.

His best quality by far is that he tries to do right by everyone, whether he likes them or not. If he likes them, he will go all out and do what is required without feeling it is an effort at all, though if he does not, he grits his teeth and gets on with it. It is a matter of pride for himself, however, that he would treat those he dislikes with respect, as it takes a lot for him to be riled enough to be shaken out of his measured and fair persona.

Kevin's worst quality is that he is sometimes, to put it politely, a little too fearful. Whilst he doesn't show any moral cowardice, his reluctance to try out for the Quidditch team, despite his love of the game, shows that he just isn't all that brave and would hide if he could from something that would only cause short term embarrassment. Slowly, however, as he grows up he is trying to fight his anxieties and become, in his own words, 'more of a man'.

Ultimately, if you take the time to get to know Kevin, it would be worth it. A typical teenage boy, he is full of energy and enthusiasm for the things he likes, an enthusiasm that is often infectious and is at the least rather endearing. He has a wicked and often self deprecating sense of humour, and does his best to make people smile, even if his jokes are lame (occasionally deliberately). Although shy when it comes to asking out girls, he would make a romantic and incredibly loyal boyfriend who wouldn't dream of looking at another girl.
---------------

The War --
Affiliation? As Kevin himself says, his family's safety is his priority. Although he and his are by no means Voldemort sympathisers, if remaining neutral was their only way of survival, that is the route he would take.
Role played in the second war: Knowing full well that he just wasn't the fighting kind, Kevin took it upon himself to return to the safty of his pureblood heritage and not fight against the Carrow regime - at least, not obviously. He had learned very quickly from the experiences of others that pain and injury resulted quickly for those who badmouthed the Death Eaters, and it had occurred to him that any overt dissent on his part might reflect badly on his family. Above all, while his baby sister Maya was out of his parents' protection, he refused to do anything that might risk her safety.
He wasn't without a heart, though, as seeing the results of the more vociferous protests deeply affected him. He used principles from COMC classes to make basic attempts at healing injuries from the knife cuts that were inflicted on certain occasions, although he cowed to those with more experience at soothing the likes of curse scars, choosing instead to watch, learn, and brood upon what was happening...
Was your character injured in any way, either permanently or temporarily? Compared to injuries sustained by others in his cohort, certainly not. If asked, this would be what Kevin said, and would not say more unless you are a close friend of his, and even then only if pressed very hard. However, he did sustain an injury to his left arm (luckily, for magic purposes he is right handed) during the Battle of Hogwarts, when he ventured back into the castle to look for his sister, who had snuck back in in a misguided attempt to fight. His arm was pinned against the wall and subsequently partially crushed by a falling piece of statue, blown apart by a curse. Luckily, he found Maya before any harm came to her and snuck back into the passageway to the Hog's Head.
Where was your character when Harry Potter won? As the last battle was being fought, Kevin was comforting his sister, hiding with the other students in the dingy pub as they awaited news. At this point they knew that their parents, who had been alerted to the situation by friends of theirs living in Hogsmeade, had returned along with parents of other Hogwarts students, and were fighting for their lives up in the castle.
How does your character feel about the end result? Upon hearing word of Harry Potter's victory, Kevin's overwhelming reaction was one of relief. However, he still feels somewhat bitter that despite doing everything he should have done - keep his head down, look after his sister, not support the side who were morally in the wrong - his family still had to suffer. Richard Whitby had fought vailiantly, protecting a group of five young students who had been hurt in the fighting and subsequently unable to escape, but had been hit by the double effect of an unknown Death Eater curse hitting him square between the shoulderblades, and in a situation reflecting that of his eldest son, had been hit in the spine by falling pieces of stone when the castle walls were blown open. He was found lying on the steps of the mangled entrance hall during the hour of mercy granted by Voldemort to treat the injured and gather the dead, and initially it was believed that he had perished. Insisting otherwise, his wife fought to revive him and managed to find a very faint pulse. He was one of the first to be transferred to St Mungo's, where he still spends the week-days in intensive physiotherapy to try and reverse the damage sustained to his back. When not in hospital, he has to spend time in a wheelchair as he is unable to walk.

First Person: Hexed Private
Maya's birthday today. She's been ever so quiet, not opened her presents yet or anything... I know people change as they get older, but she's just lacking in enthusiasm for anything at the moment. I've been trying to cheer her up, but she misses Dad, I think. We're going to go and see him later, but he's so tired and weak at the moment that I worry it'll upset her more.

I just wish I knew what to do.

Third Person:

---------------
Kevin leaned back in the squashy leather armchair and sighed, scratching his nose with the end of his quill. Whilst he found having a journal useful - it allowed him to formalise his thinking, and to summarise exactly what was getting to him - the intial act of writing it all down was something he still found a little traumatic.

It had been his father's idea. The only other family member to sustain physical injury during the last battle, Kevin and Richard had re-bonded somewhat over their troubles in the immediate aftermath of the war ending. During one visit to St Mungo's, Richard had sent the girls out on an errand, and used the opportunity to speak privately with his son.

Kevin would never repeat the exact words his father sent to him, but was willing to say that he appreciated his suggestion that writing his thoughts down on paper was a much better idea than bottling it all inside, or speaking to someone with whom one did not feel entirely comfortable. So, not all that long after his return home from school, he acquired one of the magical journals. Every day, at the same time, he went up to his father's study - a place that had become his own refuge lately - and wrote until emotionally he couldn't take it anymore.

The problem was, Kevin thought as he tapped the nib of his quill against the page, that he didn't know exactly what to do with the journal once he had confided in it. Was there something he was supposed to do - show it to someone, perhaps? Burn it in some kind of symbolic gesture? He wasn't quite sure. It was, however, one problem too many for him and frankly, he didn't want to deal with that at the moment.

Instead, he picked up the quill, refreshed the end with ink from a pot he rested on the side of the chair, touched pen to parchment and began to write.
---------------

I've never played this character before, but if you want to see some more of my writing style, here's a log in which I played Andrew Kirke who shares some similar character traits.http://community.livejournal.com/euterpes_corner/52081.html
I also played Penelope Clearwater in Hayley's Laura Madley application log.

When not in hospital, he has to spend time in a wheelchair as he is unable to walk.

Following his time as Keeper on the Hufflepuff house team in 5th year, for a while Kevin half entertained the idea of trying out for a professional team upon graduation, ideally his beloved Ballycastle Bats. However, following a surprise "O" result in his Transfiguration OWL, he was offered the opportunity to study on the extra-curricular Animagus programme. During the summer term of his final year, he successfully passed the exams and registered officially with the Ministry. Somewhat amusingly, he can now take the form of a bat (something he tried to avoid mentioning in front of Ryan Stebbins, his vampire obsessed almost brother in law).

With Grade O NEWTs in Transfiguration and COMC, an E grade in Charms and Muggle Studies and an A in Herbology, he was well placed to take up a career in the field in which he now works. The Department for CRMC being what it is, it required some of its employees to work away from London - and this is what Kevin now does. Based in Inverness, he travels the Scottish Highlands to ensure the protection and safety of habitats of various animals, as well as acting as an emergency vet until higher trained individuals can attend injured creatures. As part of his job entails the non discovery of these animals by Muggles, he sometimes has to liase with Obliviators.

In his personal life, he moved in with his long term girlfriend, Chelsea, who is now studying Psychology at a Muggle University, a year or so after graduation. They had been together for nearly four years at that point, and are very happy. He's been entertaining the idea of proposing for a few months now, but given their track record of how long they took to get together and move in with each other, it is unsurprising that he hasn't quite yet plucked up the courage to ask her. Perhaps the impending marriage of his old friend Wesley Harper to the couple's school-mate Laura Madley will spur him on...

Quick Facts
Patronus: Northern to the last, his patronus takes the form of a whippet - a greyhound like dog often used for racing.
Boggart: A vampire, complete with black cloak and pointed teeth dripping with blood. Somewhat ironic as his parents gave him the middle name Bram, after the author who wrote the Dracula book set partially in the town of Whitby.
Magical Strengths & Weaknesses: Kevin has always been the kind of student who favours the practical above anything else, only seeing the point of theory when it actually helps to underpin practical skills. To that end, it is only his Hufflepuff work ethic that helped him to scrape passes in History of Magic, a subject he dropped with glee in sixth year. His best subjects were Charms, Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration - the latter mostly because he really, REALLY wanted to study to be an animagus one day.
Dislikes: History of Magic, being teased about his lack of guts when it comes to trying out for the Quidditch team, his height, his previous lack of a girlfriend, and the thought that one day he might be a terrible father.

Personality: Most people, upon first meeting Kevin, leave the encounter thinking "eh, he's OK, I guess".

A typical boy, he is full of energy and enthusiasm for the things he likes, an enthusiasm that is often infectious and is at the least rather endearing. He has a wicked and often self deprecating sense of humour, and does his best to make people smile, even if his jokes are lame (occasionally deliberately).
