The Slytherin Virgo

While these Slytherins might not be the most outgoing of their class, they are often among the most wise, and their canny observation and lightning-fast analysis of any given situation will take them far. Often behind that quiet mien hides the mind of a big dreamer, who had both the imagination to come up with a concept and the power to follow it through. These Slytherins are an interesting mix of politeness and politics, pragmatism and intuition. They make good alchemists, Ministry bureaucrats (well, somebody's got to do it), and academic advisors. They are often underestimated. This is most unwise.

Name: Magda Elphaba Restwold
Gender: Female
Date of birth: 20th September, 1992
House/Year: Slytherin, 5th year
Blood status: Half-blood (mostly pure but with some Muggle ancestry)
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Played-By: Marit Larsen
Appearance: Magda is of average height (5'4) and weight, though her body is less shapely than she would like to be. Her hair is mahogany brown in its natural state, though on very rare occasions it is blonde or light brown when she has been experimenting with glamour charms. Her blue eyes are of the kind that can look straight through you should she so desire, and if she can get away with it at school, she is somewhat liberal with the eyeliner to make them more defined – she feels that a striking look is more likely to win and sustain attention.

History: For those who set much store in blood purity, it is never a good idea to try and rile Magda Restwold about having Muggles in her lineage. For one, she really doesn't care – if Muggles were so bad for the future of the Wizarding community, she says, two Muggles wouldn't be able to have a magical child in the first place. Secondly, Magda is one of the few witches at Hogwarts whose blood heritage can actually be traced back more than a century or two – her ancestor was Agnes Restwold, who was a courtier in the reign of Henry VIII when she acted as lady in waiting to Queen Katherine Howard, a childhood friend. Hiding the fact that she was a witch, as letting it be known would kill her, Agnes left the court when the Queen was disgraced lest she be dragged down with her. Since then, the Restwolds rejected life as high-fliers in the royal circle, instead retreating to the darker circles of the wizarding community for protection, rising through the ranks there instead.

Despite this, the links with high society never really let the family go. Magda's father, John Restwold, is a wizard who chose to make his living in the Muggle world for this reason – a former Slytherin himself, who is a television political editor for the BBC. Wizards who are au fait with Muggle culture will know him from the programme “Westminster on Sunday”, a somewhat highbrow discussion of the week's events. He is married to Mary Bassett, a photographer whose work is popular with celebrities and other famous people who, in her own words, have more money than sense. Interestingly, Mary is the descendant of Anne Bassett, another lady in waiting to Katherine Howard, whose father (Lord Lisle) was arrested for treason when Anne of Cleves was humiliatingly cast aside. Her noble connections entitle her to the honorific of The Right Honourable Mary Bassett, being the daughter of the current Lord Southampton.

All this means that Magda has had the somewhat confused upbringing of the slightly-Muggle, slightly-magical Hogwarts student. Some might say that this is what has spurred her on to be so politically active, as she would wish to find her own place in the world to wipe away the effects of her mixed-up upbringing. They would never say this to her face, however, as Magda is rather handy with the infamous Bat Bogey hex.

There was never any doubt – at least in her own mind – that she would follow her father to Hogwarts. Promptly being sorted into Slytherin – a pleasing result, as she liked the idea of being able to play up to the intimidating reputation of the house when she wished, and there was a lesser stigma to the House these days – she spent the next few years making more allies than friends in other houses, although she gets on well with her dorm-mates. Academically she was not especially outstanding, being slightly above average, although her Head of House says that with a lot of effort, there could be one or two Os in her OWLs and beyond, and anything less than an E at this stage would be disappointing.

In the summer leading up to fifth year, Magda has been spending her time at home in the countryside of Wiltshire, taking part in genteel pursuits such as riding, swimming and going for long walks in order to relax before the tough year ahead. When her parents backs are turned, however, she has been coaching her younger brother – eleven year old James – in curses that will protect him when he joins the school in September. Sure, she's not supposed to do Magic at home yet – but as her father is a wizard, who will know?

Current Classes: Magda is taking OWLs in all of the compulsory subjects, plus the standard two optional subjects. Her choices are Arithmancy and Muggle Studies. These seem to some people to be an odd combination as the former is believed to be the hardest subject and Muggle Studies a 'soft option', but Magda chose them for calculated effect. With arithmancy, she wanted to appear clever and intellectual – for her, image is key – but Muggle Studies is both an easy O for her and also interesting, due to the Muggle History studied in the course.

Affiliations: Slytherin 5th year female prefect, and also a committee or founding member of several student organisations, being a leadership candidate and a political personality. Most notably, she is Chair of the long-monikered Hogwarts Students for Better Wizard-Muggle Relations (HSBWML), which does not believe in wizards revealing their status to the Muggle community, but thinks that Muggles who are aware of the existence of the magical world should receive better support. The group also campaigns for the Obliviate charm to be replaced by others in the treatment of Muggles, and a long term goal is the better integration of the Ministry of Magic with the Muggle government.

Personality: Magda has what one might call a Gryffindor streak in that she is undeniably courageous (though she can't always be bothered – her sometime lack of motivation is her biggest failing) and she will fight vociferously for the rights of others, but that is where the Gryffindor streak ends and the Slytherin in her begins. Magda picks her battles carefully, and while others have often heard of her reputation and approached her to join with and promote some cause or other, she only follows those that will better the interests or that agree with the beliefs of her and hers.
In the general sense, Magda is one of those people who initially stays back from the action while she assesses what is going on and what part she might play in it, although before long she is right in there. She is nothing if not passionate and certainly not boring.
