character name. “I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it.” - George Carlin FULL NAME: Amos Jonathan Diggory NAME MEANING: Amos - "to be borne by God", Jonathan - "a gift from God", Diggory - a place name, referring to a dyke that stops the flow of water. NICKNAMES: Mossy
DATE OF BIRTH: 23rd October 1950 PLACE OF BIRTH: Keswick, Cumbria CURRENT AGE: 16, about to turn 17 BLOODLINE: Halfblood. Well, barely. Both of his parents were Muggleborn. SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
PARENTS: Jacob Amos Diggory, 40. Former Hufflepuff and Head of the Beast Division of the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Ada Martha Diggory, 39. Former Hufflepuff and an artist who runs a gallery in Diagon Alley. SIBLINGS: None. FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS: Jacob's relationship with Amos isn't especially close, but as his only son their relationship is cordial and they have each other's best interests at heart. They enjoy each other's company and regularly have a "blokes' lunch" when Amos isn't at school. Amos is much more of a mother's boy than he will admit to in public, and enjoys being fussed over her when he is at home.
School. “He who establishes his argument by noise and command shows that his reason is weak.” - Michel de Montaigne
HOUSE & YEAR: Hufflepuff, 1962 - 1969 WAND: Cherry, 10.5 inches with a unicorn tail hair core. PREFECT or HEAD: Hufflepuff 6th year male prefect. LOYALTY: Undecided as of yet, but he is most certainly against the ideals of the Death Eaters. BOGGART: House Elves - he hates the things. At the start of his first year, one creeped him out by insisting on taking his underpants for ironing and they've made him cringe ever since. ANIMAGUS: N/A METAMORPHMAGUS: N/A PATRONUS: Amos can't cast one yet, not quite being at that level in Charms. CLASSES: Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Divination and Herbology. OWLS SCORES: Here.QUIDDITCH: Beater. CLUBS: None.
Appearance. “The wisest have the most authority” - Plato
Ethnicity: Caucasian Height: 6'1 Build: Tall, with broad shoulders and muscles just developed enough to show definition. He looks toned rather than bulky and has the lithe build of a swimmer rather than the heavy frame of a rugby player. Eyes: Blue. Not too bright, not too dark. Just sort of ordinary. Hair: Light brown, with bits of blond in it from being outside in the sun. Skin: On a girl, his colouring would be described as English Rose. He's not too pale, but given the lack of sun, he isn't exactly tanned either. Wardrobe: When at home, he wears the sort of clothes he'd wear at Hogwarts on a Hogsmeade weekend - jeans or tracksuit bottoms with a t-shirt, if going casual, or smart trousers and a shirt if on a date. At school, of course, he wears his Hufflepuff uniform - tidy enough to pay lip service to the idea of setting an example, but his shoes are usually a little scuffed and his robes often have grass stains on them from sitting outside when it is sunny. Distinguishing Features: He has a scar on his left hand, between the thumb and forefinger running down to his wrist. It was obtained when someone cast a spell in DADA back in his OWL year, which missed its target and scraped Kenneth's hand by accident, narrowly missing the rest of him.
History. “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don't interfere” - Ronald Reagan
Amos Jonathan Diggory was born at 6 in the morning on an unusually cold October day. Summer should only have been beginning to die down, but when Amos arrived, the fields around his small Cumbrian home town were dusted with frost and the fire was going in the spare bedroom where his mother gave birth to him. It was a small country cottage - at least by the fact that his parents had an expanding collection of artwork and books and were in increasing need of the room over the years. Many of his early memories involved the clatter and bangs of spellwork on wood as extensions were added in order to accomodate the growing gallery and library.
Amos' mother, Ada Bateman, was not long out of Hogwarts when she became re-acquainted with her future husband at the Ministry of Magic. She was a new recruit in the Wizengamot Administration Service, he had been in the same year but was now in his training at the DRCMC as part of the Beast Division. On her way to the office for the first day, she had become lost in the many corridors and lifts within the building, and to make matters worse, when she finally got into the correct lift, it broke down. Luckily, Jacob Diggory was passing with his colleagues, and he helped to get her out, directing her to the right floor just in time for her to sign in. Ever grateful, she agreed to a date, and the couple have been together ever since.
Married a year and a half after their first meeting, given the usual standards of magical couples, it was expected that they would settle down and have children almost immediately. However, it was their ideal to have a settled family home before having the actual family, and it was four more years before their first and only child was born. By this point they had the family home in Keswick, near her parents, as well as an overnight flat in London as part of their property portfolio. It made career and family a much easier pair to balance.
After a gap in which they got further into their respective careers and debated the future of their family, it was discovered that Ada carried a medical condition meaning that having further children would be extremely unlikely. As a result, Ada quit her job at the W.A.S. and stayed at home to look after her growing son, occupying the time not spent caring for him by becoming involved in art. When he was old enough for Hogwarts, she took a job in a local art gallery.
Amos had a fairly ordinary time growing up, by magical standards at least. He was nine when the first of his cousins went to Hogwarts, and was insanely jealous of what he perceived to be her exciting adventures that she wrote home about. Instead, he was tutored at home by one of the other local witches. He joined other children at different wizarding homes in turn to receive a basic education in the wizarding world and the Muggle one, so that they would not be vulerable when the headed out into a world that was likely not their own.
He was, however, quite certain by now that he was definitely a wizard. At the age of six, he had been out with his family in the park when a Muggle boy called him a 'freak', being the only boy in his group. Instead of pointing out to the lad that he was an idiot and these were his cousins, he glared so hard at him that his rival's rucksack exploded, sending his toys and books sprawling over the lawn.
A hard working and quiet child at this point, his first and second year passed mostly uneventfully. He passed his classes well, made plenty of friends, and declined the suggestion to try out for Quidditch, knowing that while he loved the game, for now he would prefer to concentrate on school work.
In his third year, there were two noted events. The first, his decision to finally try out for Quidditch, when he became a team reserve - a position he would keep for two years. The second, his discovery of girls. Seeing them in their own clothes dressed up for Hogsmeade visits made him realise what beautiful creatures women were, and he did his best to make them feel viewed as such. He had his first girlfriend towards the end of the year, but it was more of a friendship thing, and they parted amicably before going home for the summer.
In his fifth year, to his delight, he was made Prefect. He hoped that this would lead to advantages later on, and he knew that it afforded some perks in the present. It did not, however, win him friends in certain places. Combined with the stress of OWL year, when half of his year went almost mad, he was very glad to see the back of it. A more pleasant aspect of his fifth year was, however, when he secured a starting place as Beater on the Quidditch team due to the graduation of one of the previous players.
Following his first full year as a Prefect and Quidditch player, he has spent the summer relaxing at the family home in Cumbria, learning to waterski on Bassenthwaite Lake and catching up with his favourite Muggle novelists. He's also decided to try and win round the affections of a pretty girl at some point in his sixth year... because that can't hurt, can it? Sixth year will likely be busier than fifth, so he intends to have as many fun diversions as possible.
Personality. “The authority of those who teach is often an obstacle to those who want to learn.” - Cicero
The Hufflepuff Scorpio This is one of the more bizarre signs to get sorted into House Hufflepuff, but every now and then it happens. It's not as contradictory as one would think. Scorpio is perfectly happy to work behind the scenes without getting much recognition, provided that work actually gets something meaningful done and results in personal success; success means different things to different people, and Hufflepuff Scorpios tend to define success as "accomplishment" rather than as "prestige." These Hufflepuffs are indefatigable. They have the energy and the willpower to keep going even when everyone else around them has quit. They are workaholics to an extreme, if they are obsessed with a particular project; otherwise, they are happy to devote their prodigious energies to their family and friends, to whom they are devoted. Scorpio is often associated with the serpents of Aesculapius, demi-god of medicine, and the social orientation and skill at herbals that Hufflepuff wizards exhibit make the Scorpio Hufflepuff a natural healer.Amos is unashamedly romantic, but not in the soppy, traditional way. He makes it clear to girls he dates what he thinks and how he feels, and spoils them because he wants any woman he's with to feel like a goddess. This usually works out pretty well for him, too. Amos was a bit of a stick in the mud in his younger days. A stickler for the rules, as he felt this was the best way to make a good impression upon the teachers and other adults at school, he became Prefect in his 5th year and was known for being the one you'd go to if you wanted a fair judgement sticking to the letter of the law - having said that, he will occasionally look the other way where his mates are concerned, but only if they're not doing something morally wrong. However, with the stress of OWLs making him re-evaluate himself, he grew up into the young man he is today - a cheerful, charming and charismatic young man, who is sometimes quick to temper but has a good heart really. Turn Ons: Jasmine scented perfume (heady and passionate), well presented girls (because they look like they've made an effort), girls just after they've got out of bed in the morning (therefore at their most natural). Turn Offs: Lavender (reminds him of his grandmother), being too pristine (looks too much like a museum piece, someone who cannot be touched or, most importantly, rumpled), being snotty and dismissive of a bloke's best efforts. Likes: Real ale, girls next door, being admired, dogs, a laid-back existence. Dislikes: Alcopops, prissy girls, pranks, toads, disruption. Fears: On a lower, more everyday level, he is worried about humiliation. He works hard so he isn't shown up for incompetence or other academic-related downfalls. On a higher, more fundamental level, he worries about these rumours about an upcoming war, and the last thing he wants is for his family to become involved. Strengths: Hard work, focus, theory. Weaknesses: Vision, strategy, calm. Mirror of Erised: Having his own office, with a big desk and a secretary. out of character. OOC STUFFS OOC STUFFS OOC STUFFS. Private to: Self Oh honestly. I don't know what's going on around here, but the number of assignments piling up is just ridiculous. I'm not a slacker by any means, but let's be realistic here: we're sixth years! Smithins is alright, and I know she thinks I'm getting along really well with the coursework, but I'm surprised at her for entrusting us with some of these topics. Seriously. /Private
Private to: Felicia Bells My dearest darling beautiful Felicia. I'm bored and I feel that your magnificent company would entertain and lift my spirits greatly. D'you fancy going for a drink next Hogsmeade weekend? /Private
Public So, the working week is almost at an end and frankly, I'm really bloody glad of it. I intend to spend as much of my time off as possible either asleep in bed or asleep in the common room.
What is everyone else doing? And please, don't hold anything back. I know you're probably all living lives much more exciting than mine. Don't hide it to spare my feelings - I'm embracing it now!
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE
Amos sat out by the Lake, his feet dangling over the edge and into the water. The gentle ripple of the water between his toes tickled him as he looked over at the castle, kicking his feet gently.
It wasn't often that he coped with being alone, but this was one of those days where he actually took his dad's advice and took the time to 'fly solo', and try and make sense of how he was feeling. He didn't feel as though he was anywhere close to sorting his head out yet, but the one advantage of this quiet time was that there was no-one around to see how upset he still got when he thought of his deceased grandfather.
He muttered quietly, looking at his reflection in the dark water. He regarded his own face with a growing sense of fear and confusion, for as his mum said almost constantly, despite resembling her more than her other relatives, there was just 'something about him' that reminded those who knew him of Richard Bateman. As much as he missed his grandfather terribly, Amos wasn't ready to meet him again just yet.
