Her heartbeat drummed in her throat.

When she touched his shoulder, mail warmed by his body rasping against her fingers, he twisted fluidly in his crouch to look up at her, face shadowed but eyes gleaming darkly in the dappled shadows of the trees.

Her bow was strung and held against her thigh, and she lifted her head to scan the enemy's ranks, her breathing going slow and steady. Caspian was still and coiled beside her, carrying an animal focus.

Susan scanned the twilight-cloaked clearing with a cautious eye, taking in the relaxation of the soldiers. One belched, dropping down on a log and tipping back a leather flask. An argument broke out over distribution, and one man drew a knife.

Cold purpose crystallized, and she slid her hands back to her quiver, fingers brushing the fletchings. "We can't let them get back to their main camp," she breathed. Caspian's eyes caught hers, midnight dark, his fingers on the hilt of his sword; he touched her wrist, utterly decorous and frighteningly intense, and her whole body tensed, flaring with warmth.

"Be careful," he said, and she pursed her lips and was already rising, the arrowing falling to the string and her shoulders sliding back as he leapt down into the camp, steel ringing free.
