This deserves the fuckery icon. [Wednesday
August 26th, 2009 at 3:20pm ]
Okay, this is beyond ridiculous and into malicious now.

So waywardradish on LJ runs a blog on Wordpress about holding therapy or attachment therapy, which is a little-known form of therapy that is not validated by any scientific studies or psychologists, and is in fact considered child abuse by survivors. The blog tells survivor stories, informs people about holding therapy, and presents facts (such as the death rate, which is appalling).

Recently, Wordpress decided that this was... I don't know, an unacceptable blog for some reason, and they suspended and then deleted it.

Now, they've brought it back, but they are taunting waywardradish about it.

We are beyond uncool now. We are into fuckery of the highest order. These people are denying abuse survivors their voice.

Please email Wordpress and express your indignation at this fuckery. Waywardradish has asked that you use the utmost courtsey in doing so. For the lazy (like myself), Copperbadge has a good copypasta letter here. Don't let them get away with this, guys.

meta_writer meme [Wednesday
August 12th, 2009 at 9:38pm ]
[ music | MIDDLEMAN (dun) ]

1. How often do you write a week?

I try to write every day. Sometimes it's a paragraph (most of the time), sometimes it's a chapter (ha, yeah, I wish). It's easier on me as long as I do it every day, though. Part of the routine.

2. Do you carry a notebook with you? Is it full of stuff to do with writing?

Yes, and sort of. It's got some writing stuff in it, but most of it is just scribbles of dialogue or random doodles or the occasional class notes or... well, yeah, it kinda is all to do with writing, but that's because everything has to do with writing.

3. Do you only write when inspired?

LULZ no. If I waited for inspiration I'd never get anything done.

4. Can you self edit?

To some extent. I'm an English-major ninja with grammar and spelling and I can notice big "WTF" sins that I've committed, but for the small stuff, I need outside eyes.

5. How do you feel about critique?

I love it beyond belief, as long as it is honest and well-meant.

6. How do you feel about rejection?

Eh, I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Rejection happens. Shrug, save it if it's a good one, rejoice if it's not a form letter and submit the story to the next one.

7. Are you misunderstood?

Frequently, usually when I make bad puns.

8. Is your writing misunderstood?

Uh... what? If it is, I screwed up somewhere.

9. Do you consider writing a craft? An art?

In some respects, yes. It certainly can be, especially if you approach it that way. But it's also a hobby, a business, a fun thing to do, a job, a strain, any number of bloody things. It's writing, it just is.

10. Have your relationships suffered because of writing?

Not... really. If anything, they've improved.

11. Has your job suffered?

I sort of occasionally pay more attention to what's going on in my head than what I'm supposed to be doing at my job, and thus screw up. But that's very infrequent.

12. Do you ever get smacked with inspiration?

Occasionally. Usually in the form of bits of dialogue, an image, or a brief scene if I'm lucky. Never anything longer.

13. How much of writing is talent (%age), inspiration, and hard work?

10% talent, something like 5% inspiration, and 85% hard work. Or more hard work, possibly.

14. And most importantly - do you enjoy writing?

Of course! If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.

Okay, so. A man by the name of George Sodini walked into a women's gym, turned out the lights, and started shooting. Final tally was three dead, nine injured, not counting Sodini, who shot himself. The thing that really scares me about this?

Here is an exerpt from his blog, from before.

“I actually look good. I dress good, am clean-shaven, bathe, touch of cologne — yet 30 million women rejected me."

Because looking good is all it takes to get a woman. Because he was owed a woman, was owed sex, simply by virtue of being male. Because I, as a woman, owe him sex because he has made the most basic effort possible to get a female.

Because men I know have sexually harassed me without knowing it. Because men have refused to respect my personal space after being repeatedly asked. Because "chunky feminists" is still a funny joke. Because a man cornering me in a hallway and terrifying me is okay, even funny. Because I have to look around at night, to be sure I'm not being followed, and keep my keys in my hands, in order to defend myself if necessary.

And because I know that if I get raped, or murdered, because I failed to take some precaution, it is my fault. Because I am the woman, and I should have protected myself. It is not the fault of the man who raped or murdered me, it is my fault.

As if it wasn't hard enough to survive in this world. This makes me want to stay in bed and never come out.

More information and discussion here.

Meme Number One: Pick any one of my fanfics and I'll write a DVD commentary. Just for yooooou.

I'm tagging this post with the "fanfiction" tag, so you can more easily find the stuff I've written.

Meme Number Two: Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a new post.

I expect exactly no response to this, but that's okay.

I am apparently on something of an "INCOME YAY" spree, because in the last three days I have purchased the following.

1) The Sarah Jane Adventures, Season 1. I adore this show in all its Doctor-Who-FOR-KIDZ glory. Plus, you know, Sarah Jane = made of win. She just is.

2) The Aztecs. A very, very early episode of Doctor Who, featuring the Doctor accidentally getting engaged, Susan being almost nowhere to be found, Ian in a very silly eagle suit and Barbara being more awesome than you. Old!Skool companions rock my socks in general.

3) Sense and Sensibility. The Emma Thompson version, thanks. It's faithful to the book in spirit and stars most of my favorite actors, namely Emma Thompson, Mr. Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Imogen Stubbs, Imelda Staunton, Alan Rickman, and Unexpected Hugh Laurie and Laurielet (or so I am told). The only one missing is Mark Sheppard. Oh, and Hugh Grant is in it, but I can get over that.

4) Battlestar Galactica: Razor. BECAUSE I WANTED IT, THAT'S WHY. Also, it has Lee being kinda cool for once and Young!Adama. Plus, you know, more Cain.

5) The Lion in Winter. It was five bucks, guys! Five bucks for Peter O'Toole! Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn and Anthony Hopkins being somewhat subpar but hey he was short on sleep and TIMOTHY DALTON omnomnom and basically I love it. So there.

6) ALL YOUR MIDDLEMAN DVDS ARE BELONG TO ME. \m/

Bye bye, income. It was nice knowing you.

ETA: My daddy took me to the bookstore. :D :D :D And every time my daddy takes me to the bookstore, he buys me books! *is daddy's little girl and not ashamed*

7) Sex With Kings, which is a wonderfully wonderful history book about kings' mistresses through the ages. I love it so. It's very funny and brilliantly researched, and less depressing than the sequel, Sex with the Queen.

8) Ciaphis Cain: Hero of the Imperium! It's a Warhammer novel, but I've had it recommended, so I read the first few pages. I got Miles Vorkosigan vibes off it from a mile off. So, I bought it. We'll see if the Miles-vibes hold.

OMG OMG YOU GUYS [Wednesday
August 5th, 2009 at 5:41pm ]
YOU GUYS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS

Okay, so I did who_remix, right, and my offer to write a drabble for anyone who figures out which story was the one I wrote still stands, but that's not the point. So I did who_remix and the entire point of who_remix is that somebody takes one of your stories and writes their own take on it.

So somebody remixed "Listening."

AND IT IS SO FUCKING AMAZING OH MY GOD YOU GUYS.

It just blew me away. The language, the nods to the original story and to the even-more-original show, Johnny, the Doctor, the TARDIS, the shipping, Tegan, just every tiny little thing. I would not change a word of this story, guys. OH MY GOD SO AMAZING. SO AMAZING.

Go ye hence and read it. SO GOOD.

O HAY LOOK A MEME [Sunday

Post one or more sentences from each of your WIP's because if you do you might be magically inspired to finish them.

Hoo boy. )

There turned out to be so many that I ended up splitting them into fanfiction and original fiction. )

11 and 17 may actually end up being the same story. I'm still percolating that one.

Also, if you can guess the fandom for the fanfics, I will... I don't know, do something nice for you. Maybe write you a drabble. Be careful: some of the obvious ones are less obvious than they look. :D

Anyway, which ones intrigue? Any of them look like I'm wasting my time?

Still bloody sick.

Only posting to recommend gehayi's essay on historical fiction and why it's important to get the facts right. She does a brilliant job of pointing out common errors and the results of them here.

Beings as how I'm writing historical fantasy myself at the moment with a couple of co-authors, this essay struck home in more ways than one, and I highly recommend it to anyone who reads or writes historical fantasy.

You know, watching Amazing Grace (which I adore, incidentally), it's kind of funny knowing that Wilberforce's anti-French anti-slavery bill that kills eighty percent of the slave trade is going to be one of the causes of the war of 1812.

Fic: Inspection [Sunday
July 5th, 2009 at 9:58pm ]
[ music | Hey There Delilah (David X Remix) -- Plain White Tees ]

Title: Inspection
Summary: Pellaeon has a conversation with a stormtrooper. The author's bugbear gets aired.
Fandom: Star Wars with a hefty dose of Dresden Files references.
Spoilers: Post-Hand of Thrawn. Doesn't spoil much but assumes knowledge of those events.
Rating: PG-13
Note[s]: Written for dark_puck as part of that comment meme a while back. Beta'd by Bex because she is lovely. Prompt was: Pellaeon and Murphy. Also, this fic assumes that the height requirements for stormtroopers are more like guidelines these days (u c wut I did thar?).

One did not necessarily pay attention during inspections. )

been reading romance novels [Tuesday
June 30th, 2009 at 5:57pm ]
Why is it that every hero and heroine fall in love in a matter of days or (in the most egregious cases) hours? Is that really how it works? I mean, it seems really fast and kind of stupid. I can count on my hands the number of times I've seen people take longer, and those books/movies are usually among my favorites (Devil in Winter, Savage Damsel and the Dwarf, Penelope). And Shards of Honor doesn't count, because... I say so, I guess. ZARTRAM WILLS IT.

Props to Anne Stuart for having a hero who realizes that no means no, incidentally. He was getting pretty hot and heavy with his heroine and cut for sex ) when she said "no." Most heroes that I can think of would've just kept right on going, but this guy stops. *pets him lots* I think that's when I was convinced he was good for this particular heroine.

And how sad is it that I feel like this is something that should be praised? Argh. Okay. Not getting into the rape discussion from a while ago.

No, actually, Shards of Honor doesn't count because we get to see a continuing love story for the people in question. It's not marriage and that's it, I'm not left wondering how these two are going to work out the rest of their lives. I get to see it. I get to see them manage and navigate intimacy and kids and in-laws and civil wars and all those other pesky problems you get with marriage, and they do quite a nice job, thank you very much. And that's not just me shipping it like FedEx.

Incidentally, when Frederick met Katherine she was engaged, and it wasn't to him either. I must figure out how this works. I suspect it's going to make me strongly dislike Katherine's poor mother, but what can you do.
