[CHARACTER]
name: Karura (Karurauatsurei)
series: Utawarerumono (anime)
canon point: post-canon
age: @_@ when can you ever tell with anime. looks to be in her early twenties!
gender: female
appearance: LINK | LINKTWO | this one too I guess
background: Once upon a time, Karura was actually Karurarautserei, princess of the Giriyagina clan of the country of Na Tunk (yeah it's a mouthful). The Giriyagina clan boasted of their superior strength and evolution and basically spent their time looking down on people and oppressing others. They were soon attacked and annihilated, leaving Karura and her younger brother Derihourai as the only survivors. Karura held out long enough for her brother to escape capture from slave traders, but was soon imprisoned by Swonkas, the new ruler of Na Tunk Empire. Swonkas would develop an unhealthy obsession with Karura, an obsession that would haunt her. Karura eventually leaves the castle, becoming a “Nakuan” or a gladiator, and sheds her name ‘Karuraraustsereireadfs’, leaving her Giriyagina heritage and her childhood far behind. She works as a Nakuan for some time, before being captured by slave traders (AGAIN). The ship she was being transported on encountered a storm at sea, causing the traders to abandon their cargo to their deaths in favor of reaching shore themselves. Out of all the slaves, Karura manages to escape – breaking her chains, swimming across sea, in order to catch up with the traders. She then proceeds to slaughter them all with her bare hands (and sharp nails). She’s eventually picked up by Hakuoro’s retainers, Oboro and Kurou, and brought to the palace of Tsukuru. There she is imprisoned, before asking the emperor for a chance to prove her worth for his army. He accepts her challenge by pitting her against his Samurai General , Benawi, who she fights to a standstill. This impresses Hakuoro enough that he accepts her offer.

Karura would spend the next few months of her life fighting for Tusukuru, and by extension Hakuoro. Eventually, news of rebellion in Na Tunk reaches Tusukuru, and recognizing the name of the rebellion leader, Karura asks for Hakuoro’s permission to aid the rebellion. He refuses, which doesn’t really matter, seeing as Karura kidnaps him and drags him to Na Tunk (as well as the rest of his harem) anyway. She meets Derihourai, who has not grown up as much as she wished he had, and beats some sense into him. Finally, they meet Swonkas again, who is even more crazy about Karura, and Derihourai kills him and takes over Na Tunk, renaming the country Karurawatsurei. Karura leaves the country to go back to Tusukuru, despite various pleas for her to stay and assist her younger brother.

She fights against the Kunnekamun and eventually watches as Hakuoro turns out to be Witsuarunemitea (the death god) and is sealed away. She leaves the army and the country after that, becoming a traveling mercenary with her fellow comrade Touka.

previous game canon: n/a
personality: I already live my life as a free woman.

Karura is an independent, easygoing woman who values her freedom almost as much as she values a good brand of sake. She looks approachable, with her casual manner and friendly smile, but is more often branded as a “freak” or feared by others. After all, Karura is a mercenary, not a soldier – as that name entails that she owes loyalty to a superior, loyalty that she has given to only one person in the course of her life – and enjoys what she does, perhaps to a fault. She is a one-woman army on the battlefield, thoroughly embracing the adrenaline rush. She kills others in a – “gorey” manner, smashing their bodies apart until they’re near unrecognizable without impunity. She may murmur and protest against those who run away screaming, “how rude!” but this is more of a pretense. Karura just enjoys a good battle, preferably one where she can let loose and decimate everyone in her path. Self-control seems to be a word that has never been introduced to her. She’ll even bring a jug of sake with her to the army, sneaking sips in between slashing people to death. Drinking is something she enjoys, why wait for a respectable hour to do it? Karura seems to be very much comfortable with her life, her sword in one hand and her drink in the other.

Surprisingly, battle is not what makes Karura the woman she is today, despite how at home she seems to be with it. She has her fair share of secrets, ones that she will keep to the grave, and it takes a rather perceptive person to detect moods outside of happy, happy-drunk, or murder-happy. She firmly believes in her freedom to the point where she has cut all ties with her home and her people (as well as her younger brother) by abandoning her old name, Karuruatsureii. And yet, while freedom is one of her objectives, she still wears the iron collar from the time she was chained around her neck. The collar is her contradiction, as it is a constant reminder of a time when she was weak, unable to protect her people, forced to work for others, and imprisoned in her own castle. While anyone else would choose to block these memories, she makes sure to embrace them. How then, is Karura embracing freedom? Hakuoro mentions this at the end of the series, as he asks her to truly live freely to which she responds with a smile and "Aren't I already?"

One thing’s for sure, her contradictory manner has not changed since she was a princess. Telling her brother to live and let live for the sake of their people and that he was dutybound to become a wonderful leader and man, and yet willingly staying behind to get captured by the enemy and accordingly forsaking her own country, not to mention determinedly cutting all ties with her “past” yet venturing back to check up on her younger brother – it would seem that she cannot make up her mind. Karura is somewhat of a liar when the situation calls for it. She easily makes promises that she knows she will break. And while she dislikes this part about herself, it's not something she's looking to change or resolve anytime soon.

Karura is also pretty shameless, given to teasing and displays of public drunkenness and yet still retaining a refined manner of speech at the same time, probably the only thing left over from her days as a princess. Karura is sociable and friendly to her comrades both on and off the battlefield, but is also secretive and more of a loner. She has a bad habit of drifting off and doing her own thing without telling others and then expecting them to accept her actions without any due explanation.
inventory: thick, iron collar strapped loosely around her neck, her huge-ass sword, a long piece of wire she keeps looped around the hilt of her sword
abilities: Karura's strength is borderline ridiculous. She can achieve feats that would normally be impossible for a human. She can easily break bones and carve flesh with her bare hands, and can dismantle people with a single hit of her sword. She has a high pain tolerance, able to fight despite being impaled in both of her arms. She’s also extremely fast, despite her giant bulky sword. Her cat ears lend her a sense of hearing better than a "normal" person as well.

[SAMPLES]
log, action, OR voice post sample:

[amused] I normally don't drink this much. At least, not to the point when someone could kidnap me and I'd be none the wiser. Touka will have to pick up the tab, then. Perhaps I should be impressed! Being chosen to take part in whatever scheme you have in store for me... I'm sure there were some strict standards involved. Now, what would be the best way to express my gratitude...?

Ah, I know. I'll say it with my fists. One good turn usually deserves another, as they say.

ALSO LOG BECAUSE

Karura doesn’t allow herself to remember. The time when her hands used to fashion daisy wreaths rather than claw their way through flesh, the time when family meant something to her, the time when her head was always held high and never bowed down for anyone.

Karura despises that time.

She's been said to be a warrior a true power player, someone with enough power to not only tip the scales but completely demolish them to her advantage. She's been said to be blessed with strength. And she can only laugh to herself at that. Strength? If she truly had strength, then she would have gotten rid of the chain around her neck and the shackles of her past. She would be able to live without feeling the shadows pressing on her back, without feeling the weight of all the promises she's broken.

No, not her. The strongest Giriyagina was, ironically, the weakest. She hated and loved that time in her past equally. She could not let go. All the strength in the world, all of her accomplishments in battle, they were nothing compared to her burdens.

Am I truly living as a free woman? She smirks, tipping the sake bottle towards her cup. Maybe, if she drank enough tonight, she'd be able to convince herself that she was.

got a question?: I'm fine with any power-caps the mod sees fit to put on Karura. Makes it fun.
