He slumps back, a little defeated looking. She doesn't understand, maybe can't. Hers is not his moral code, but should it be?
Enough thoughts race through his mind, trying to find any kind of comfort zone in all this that doesn't leave him nauseous, before, as ever, he takes refuge, to a degree, in books, letting someone else sum up his thoughts for him.
"One day you will ask me which is more important? My life or yours? I will say mine, and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life."
He can't look at her, lowering his eyes, his voice sad. "Ever is a long time. Right now... no, I can't. But that doesn't mean I don't love you."
