A good way to make the yellows brighter without washing them out is to do the effect (if it's levels or saturation or whatever) on their own layer specifically for the brighter yellows, and erase the parts you don't want to wash out. That's what I usually have to do on icons where the blacks would get too dark or the whites would get too white.
