Navin's iPod
I.THEMESONGS
Widely considered one of the most difficult piano pieces in existence, Navin has dedicated large portions of his time to learning to play it. Anyone who's spent much time around him at all would likely associate it with him.
2. Cake - "End of the Movie"
A song with an odd combination of cynicism and determination and hope, it fits Navin well. He's highly skeptical of the world and everyone in it, but at the same time, he's not giving up on them.
3. Radiohead - "How Can You Be Sure"
The skepticism comes into play again. Navin doubts everything, and right down to the title, this one fits.
4. Colin James Hay - "Waiting for my Real Life To Begin"
This is a song about considering the place you're in merely a placeholder, with a dream of something better to come. that's sort of how Navin considers Hogwarts.
5. The Badlees - "Fear of Falling"
"I have no fear of falling, but I hate hitting in the ground", the song says. Essentially, Navin likes a good rush, but only if he's planned it out enough that he's not going to be feeling any dire consequences for it.
6. The Old 97s - "Timebomb"
Navin loves his acoustic rock. That's not all, though. The song states "I've got a timebomb in my mind, Mom" - Navin also has part of him that's not as calm and stable and patient as he seems. Underneath the cool exterior is real passion.
7. Spoon - "I Turn My Camera On"
"I turn my camera on
I cut my fingers on the way
I feel me slippin away
I wipe my feelings off
Y'made me untouchable for life
And you wasn't polite"
In some ways, Navin feels a bit like an observer in the world who has a responsibility to be the cool and calm one. That's probably why he connects here.
It's a poem by Ben Jonson, but when the twins were very little their dad made up a tune to it and would sing it as a lullaby.
2. Boston - "More Than a Feeling"
Another Dad song - it's one Seamus Finnigan used to listen to a lot when they were kids.
3. Radiohead - "Black Star"
And one last song that Dad loves. Navin will forever associate this song with sitting in the kitchen while his dad worked on dinner, singing at the top of his lungs even though the notes were a bit too high for him.
4. Handel - "Water Music Suite"
Navin took from Padma her love of the Baroque. Handel is one of his favorites.
5. Billy Joel - "For The Longest Time"
Another Padma song. As small children, Niamh and Navin repeatedly demanded that this song be played over and over until the tape broke.
6. "Today" - various artists
"Today while the blossom still clings to the vine / I'll eat your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine" - another lullaby Seamus used to sing for the kids as babies. It's pretty much pure nostalgia for Navin.
"Don't care if this is hit or miss
'Cause then she kissed me and it felt like a hit"
"I don't care if forever never comes
'cause I'm holding out for that teenage feeling"
"Turn it on
Turn it on and all the way up
Turn it on
If it ain't got no relation
To any other station
Turn it on"
Because when Navin rebels, it's not going to be something huge. It's just going to be turning it on and slowly turning it up because he's found something -different- that interests him.
"You want me home but I'm gone all night
and we've probably been in some kind of fight
and if that's not real, then that's not right
and I'm beginning to see the light"
Because when Navin makes a mistake, he can usually be convinced that he was wrong.
AND NOW I NEED MORE PEOPLE. Because I already did his parents, yeah?
I'll make awesome playlists for your characters, you guys. I just need some backstory! Please? There are people Navin's been in the Ravenclaw tower with for years, people who are good friends with his twin sister...he's got to have some friends or exes or something somewhere. Help a girl out?
2. Blind Faith - "Can't Find My Way Home"
3. Carbon Leaf - "On Any Given Day"
4. Counting Crows - "Raining In Baltimore", "Rain King", "Time and Time Again"...and okay, pretty much the whole August and Everything After album
5. The Cowboy Junkies - "Sweet Jane"
6. Great Big Sea - "Feel It Turn"
7. Ryan Adams - "Cry On Demand"
8. Spoon - "Anything You Want"
9. Tori Amos - "Leather" and "Silent All These Years"
10. Mika - "Erase"
2. Syntax - "Destiny"
3. Muse - "Apocalypse Please"
4. Flogging Molly - "Rebels of the Sacred Heart" and "Black Friday Rule" and "Every Dog Has Its Day"
5. Cake - "Wheels"
6. The Killers - "When You Were Young"
"She lost her lover to an accident at sea
She pushed him overboard, and ended up with me"
2. The Teddybears - "Yours To Keep"
And I'm yours to keep if you want to
3. Neil Young - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"
Everybody seems to wonder what it's like down here
I gotta get away from this day to day running around
everybody knows this is nowhere.
4. The Allman Bros - "Jessica"
5. Count Basie - "One O'Clock Jump"
6. The Be Good Tanyas - "The Littlest Birds"
"I have those wanderin' blues and
The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs"
7. Billy Idol - "Dancing With Myself"
"With the record collection
and the mirror's reflection
I'm dancing with myself"
Say what you want,
Say what you mean,
Question yourself, are you really what you seem?"
2. The Ditty Bops - "Wake Up"
"Breath deep
Speak out
Make up your mind
Be brave
Follow your dreams
Listen to your heart
Close your eyes
Make a wish"
3. The Donnas - "Take It Off"
Okay, so not his usual genre at all, but he loves it, and it's good for getting pumped up. He'll usually listen to this one before Quidditch Matches.
4. Flogging Molly - The whole "Drunken Lullabies" album.
Navin's other favorite pre-Quidditch music.
