Their day was almost over before Jenny finally caved in and removed the jacket that she had been wearing unzippered most of the day. Especially after spending the last hour or so touring the whole farm. Though the breeze had been cool, the sun beating down on them really didn't do much for keeping things chilly. She, like most everyone except for Tatum, was feeling a little overly warm in what she had chosen to wear.
She was peering around to see where Sera had gone, going to ask the other girl to let her put her jacket away into her backpack, when she spotted Hen sitting down with his donuts instead. Making her way over, the blonde stood over him and smiled. "Good, right?" she asked of his baked goods. "We had these like, apple cinnamon roll things on the tour, they were amazing!" With another cursory glance around, she still didn't see Sera yet, and so she tossed her jacket down onto the grass beside Hendrix instead. She gently sat down on it, leaning back on her hands. "Did you have a good day?" she asked, with a little quirk of a grin.
Hendrix smiled up at Jenny. "That sounds delicious," he said giving his stomach a good pat. "I've been promised a delicious apple pie later but I have to help make it," he grinned.
He looked at her carefully, trying not to blush. "I did," he nodded. "Did you enjoy your day?" he asked looking back at the sky and trying not to let Jenny see the gentle reddening of his cheeks.
Jenny smiled fondly, reclining more comfortably on her elbows. The little bit of breeze they were getting was nice. "Tell her to use mom's recipe," she informed him. "You won't regret it!"
Looking thoughtful, she tapped her chin briefly. "I dunno what we'll make.. maybe candy apples! It's close to Halloween enough now, it's october!" If she noticed him flushing, she gave no real sign. "For sure, it was amazing and the tour was super informative. We got to see them making cider, it was cool," she explained. "I just wish everyone had a good day," she added as an after thought, looking up and out toward the rest of the group still milling around. "I think Sera's in the doghouse with her sister for sure."
"I definitely will! I'm really looking forward to this baking venture. I predict flour... flour everywhere," he grinned.
"Oh! Halloween! Have you thought about what you're going to dress up as?" he asked. He listened and nodded. "That's awesome ya nerd," he teased in a loving manner. He was never malicious, especially with his friends. He didn't even have a mean bone in his whole body. "So... why was Tate so upset?" he asked curiously. "I thought it was just supposed to be like... a nice day at the apple orchard. Does she not like apple picking?" He really was oblivious.
Brightening up at further mention of Halloween, Jenny nodded her head eagerly. "Yes! We're going to go as Velma and Daphne, and we've got a little Scooby Doo collar for Maurey. It's going to be awesome!" the blonde explained, reaching over and grabbing Hendrix's arm gently. "You should be Fred!"
When he called her a nerd, she squeezed his arm harder, sticking her tongue out at him. "I might be nerdy, but I'm extremely well informed!" she told him. Shrugging at the mention of Tatum, Jenny shook her head. "Tatum has.. a lot of things going on. I think. A lot of really heavy things. And her.. sister isn't always supportive," she explained, lowering her voice for the last part and feeling bad as soon as she said it. "I mean, it's not really my business, it's between them but they're like cats and dogs sometimes."
"That would be so fun!" he said brightly. "You think El would mind? I mean, I don't want to intrude on any fun twin things," he said putting his hands up.
"Extremely," he said giving her arm a pat. "I didn't mean to intrude, she just seemed... super defensive," he said with a nod. "I hope she figures it out for herself, can't be nice to be wound up like that."
Jenny considered for a moment, but decided that in the end, Ella probably wouldn't mind. She clearly liked Hendrix, clearly to Jenny anyway, and this would another perfect opportunity for her to get the two to have some alone time or something. "No, it'll be great!" she insisted. "Imagine if we could get the whole group together. Who could be Shaggy?"
Shaking her head at further mention of Tatum, the blonde smiled weakly. "No, it's not really intrusive, just.. I mean, I barely understand it. She just seems like a really conflicted person. I hope she figures it out too, being that on edge could drive a person to explode," the older girl sighed.
He pondered her question for a moment. "I don't know... there's always that gangly kid in potions," he grinned.
Hendrix stretched his arms and legs as tall as he could stretch them. "It's nice to be uncomplicated isn't it?" he grinned over at her.
"Bastian? He's a cutie!" Jenny agreed. "Do you think Sera would do it? I bet if I asked nice.."
Returning his grin, she nodded her head and stretched out as well, stifling a little yawn. She had been up so early. "Right? I thought we'd all just have fun and relax, but I guess that's too simple for some people to deal with."
"Bastian could work! But Sera would make... an adorable Shaggy," he laughed.
"Well I really enjoyed it," he said quietly. "I'm very glad you invited me," he started blushing again. "It was good to spend time with El... and you and Sera," he added hurriedly at the end.
"If I can get her to dress in drag for me, I guess we'll know she really loves me," Jenny joked. "I wonder if she'd rather wear a fake beard or let me hang out with Bas all night.. maybe that's how I'll get her," she grinned.
"I'm just glad someone did," she smiled. She vaguely wondered if Ella had mentioned to him yet that she didn't like apples. Something told her that she hadn't, and it gave the older twin an idea. "She obviously wanted to spend time with you, too. Did you know El actually hates apples?" the blonde leaned in to whisper. "If she's not here for the apples, guess it must be the company," she giggled, nudging him.
He laughed easily. "Drag... the ultimate test of love," he grinned. "She could pull off the beard."
"Whaaaaat?" he asked dragging out the 'a' a little in disbelief. "Whadaya mean she doesn't like apples?" his face was somewhere between confused and flustered. "You think... nah... that's silly, never mind."
"I hate to admit it, but she totally could. I guess at least it's not a big beard," she grinned back, laughing a little. "She's going to kill me, but she'll do it. I have my ways."
Shrugging her shoulders, Jenny gave her best innocent look, as if she hadn't known these facts all along and used them to her advantage. "Would I tell a lie about my own sister? I mean she doesn't like apples as in she hates apples! You didn't notice her distinct lack of snacking?" the blonde asked playfully, raising her eyebrows at him. "But like I said, I didn't hear her complaining, even though she hates apples.. so I guess she must have had a really good time with you, Hen."
"Shaggy's got that little beard," he said sticking his fingers to his chin to show her. "Sera will rock it," he giggled. "No one can resist a Parry with a pout."
Now that he thought about it... she hadn't eaten any apples. "Huh," he said scratching his chin. "Now that you point it out I have noticed the lack of apples," he scrunched his nose up and then tried to look as passive as possible. "Well... I've had a really good time with her too... but I mean... I always do... you know... we're best friends and everything," he mumbled.
"It's like, a soul patch! Very vintage," Jenny giggled back. "She so can't resist a Parry with a pout, even when she's trying to be all.. serious and diplomatic."
Scooting around a bit and getting comfortable again, the blonde leaned on her elbow to support herself and face him better. "I know," she mumbled back, smiling a little. "You guys are super cute."
He giggled a little. "Yeah well you Parrys could take down even the most stoic of diplomats," he grinned. "Something about big blue eyes, no one can say no to them," he laughed.
He blushed even deeper. "Oh... yeah," he mumbled a bit shyly. "You know she makes anyone look cute," he smacked himself in the head gently. "I mean! Well! You know..." he trailed off.
"I have to admit, these eyes have never let me down," Jenny laughed back. She lifted a hand, pointing to her left one. "They get 'em every single time."
She couldn't help but giggle as Hendrix mildly embarrassed himself, and she reached over to give him a gentle poke. "I so know what you mean. Let's just say I've been there," she murmured, before quickly adding. "Not with Ella, obviously but.. someone else we know."
He felt his stomach dropping, he knew for sure that Jenny knew now. He rolled over in the grass and buried his face. "I'm so awkward," he said into the grass.
He looked up at Jenny and sighed. "What do I do?" he asked innocently.
"You're not awkward!" Jenny quickly informed him, the earlier mentioned irresistible Parry pout taking her over. "You're like, so awesome and Ella is.. well, she's like, not a dater. But you guys would be super cute together, you know she loves you! Just as like.. I dunno, maybe more. Won't know if you don't ask, right?" she suggested.
"Sometimes best friends just.. see each other differently when they grow up," she added by way of an attempt at comfort. She and Ella had been hanging out with Hen for years, and when she looked back, she was surprised she hadn't noticed something sooner. "Well," she began slowly as he looked at her, "you have to be honest! Girls love honesty. And flowers, just.. pick her some flowers and tell her how you feel," she instructed him. "None of my boyfriends ever did that.. Charlie gave me a stolen ring once.. but El needs a boy who's like, respectful and handsome and like, gets her. You so get us, you're perfect." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
