Open to Jacob
Both Hunter and Wendell had told Julian and Jeremiah to stay away from the woods when alone, especially the water, but Julian had wandered off out of curiousity. He hadn't gone too far, but when he got to the river, he knew that he should go back. But when he saw a little reddish brown colored lump shivering against the bank, he just had to go down and investigate. When he got to the little puppy, probably a little over two months old, he gasped in surprise and took off his little coat to cover the animal up. It was still breathing, Julie could tell because he was panting so hard. He was all cut up and wet, and it looked like someone had burned him with cigarettes. Julian didn't know what those wounds were, though. He sat there for a moment before he gently scooped the puppy up and headed up the hill carefully and back through the trees. The puppy was kind of heavy, so he had to take a few breaks before he finally came out of the woods and went over to Kinley's. It was the house Julian saw Jacob go into the most. He knocked on te door with the toe of his shoe and waited with the shivering puppy in his arms.

The universe promised that someday, Jacob would get to sleep through the night again. But it wasn't going to be this month, and probably not the next two after that. Not surprisingly, Parker was a fussy baby, taking after Jacob. Kinley was feeding him upstairs when the knock on the door came. He'd been preoccupied with cleaning up the kitchen, and it took him a few moments to register the fact that someone was there.

Opening the door, he frowned down at Julian, having first looked up at adult-height before lowing his gaze down to the little boy. Immediately, he turned his attention to whatever it was in that coat. He wanted to tell Julian that he had enough to do without looking after some ridiculous little woodland creature. He had to stop taking in wounded animals. But that was a big part of who he was, and he couldn't deny the fact that he was curious about what was inside that coat and maybe a little proud that Julian had felt the need to pack it in from the woods. "What's going on?" He said as he stepped back to let Julian inside.

When Jacob looked down at him, Julian just stared back up at him until the door opened up and he was invited in. Or at least, he assumed he was being invited in, and he stepped inside of the house with the little puppy held tightly to his chest. He was tired from carrying it, but he just couldn't leave it alone in the woods.

"I found him," Julian said softly. "I wasn't suppose to wander but I think I was suppose to find him, please don't tell on me."

"I'm definitely not a snitch," he said with the slightest hint of playfulness to it. He had to respect the fact that not only had Julian broken the rules, he'd brought back a hurt animal in the process and had thought to bring it to him. He knelt down in front of the boy, holding out his hands to coax the creature from Julian's tired little arms. "Where was he?" He kind of wanted to know just how far Julian had wandered off.

lmfao! i did the same thing a while back and thought the exact same thing

Hearing the word snitch, Julian just stared up at Jacob, giving the bigger wolf a perplexed look.

"Like the golden snitch?" he asked, then his eyes widened, "Do you play quidditch? Daddy says that only the people in Harry Potter can play because I wanted to try out for the team and he said there isn't any here."

It was easy for him to get sidetracked, and at Jacob's question, he handed over the little boxer puppy he had bundled up in his jacket.

"He was by the river, I wasn't by it, but then I saw him and I went to get him. I wasn't gonna go in the river, Papa said not to and I wasn't gonna."

It took him a moment to catch the Harry Potter reference and he had to laugh. "No, not like the golden snitch. More like--" Well, he didn't know how to explain it and shook his head, holding the puppy up to eye level. "He looks pretty bad. We need to get some fluids in him first, see if he can hold them down."

He stood up and gestured for Julian to follow him as he went upstairs to the bathroom. "Do you know how to swim? I'll bet Jack could teach you if you wanted to learn. Whether you go down by the river or not, you should probably know how, just in case another puppy or a shiny thing shows up by there again." He was snarking at the boy, though he realized the kid probably wouldn't catch all of that. He laid down a few towels and then put the small animal in the bathtub.

Julian followed Jacob up the stairs, though it took him a moment to get to the top because his legs were so short. He appeared into the bathroom moments later, watching as Jacob laid the towels out and put the puppy in the tub.

"Are you gonna give him a bath?" he asked as he peered over the edge of the tub, furrowing his brow. "It looks like someone poked him with something." Cigarettes, but Julian didn't know what cigarette burns looked like. "You should be a vedinarian," he added suddenly, remembering his conversation with Joshua and how Joshua said he should tell Jacob so.

"The bathtub is just safer for him in case he gets scared and starts to struggle. I need to clean him off a little so I can see what's going on with him." He turned on the water so that it just drizzled down the drain. All the movement was making the puppy wriggle a little and a whine came out. The sound broke Jacob's heart. Cupping his hand under the water, he brought a little toward the dog and sprinkled a little on his nose. The puppy seemed interested and lapped his tongue out to catch some. "That's a good sign. If he can drink on his own, I think he'll be okay."

Glancing over his shoulder when Julian said he should be a veterinarian, Jacob quirked a smile. "You think so?"

Julian furrowed his brown in sheer curiousity as he watched what Jacob was doing, and after a moment he knelt down on his knees since he was tired of standing. When the puppy whined, he frowned a little and tipped his head up to look at Jacob.

"Uh huh, I told Joshua that," he said with a nod of his head before he looked down at the puppy. "How did he get so far away from his Mama and all the way out here in the water?"

"I suspect someone dumped him," Jacob said and it was clear that he was not happy with that idea. "Sometimes we'll get strays on the property because people don't want their animals and they just drive them up into the mountains and let 'em go." He hated that. The idea of someone just throwing away a living breathing creature was infuriating to him. Wolf Haven seemed to attract strays of all types.

"Get me the first aid kit under the sink over there. You can be my assistant." He pointed to the cupboard where a large box with a red cross rested.

"Dumped him?" Julian asked softly, his brow knitting up as he looked down at the little brownish red puppy in the tub. Upon hearing more of what Jacob had to say, he looked up at him sadly. "Oh." That was all that he could really think to say when given that information.

At the mention of the first aid kit, Julian turned to go and retrieve from it's cubby beneath the sink. He came back over and held it up proudly, apparently very happy to be helping Jacob out.

"If I shifted into a wolf, would I be as big as the puppy?" he asked, his eyebrows going up. "Sulvan calls me pup sometimes." Usually he saw Sullivan in the morning and the older boy would give him cereal. He had a habit of trying to follow Sully around, too, but he always lost him.

Jacob eyed the dog and then nodded. "About this size, I suspect. Austin was a little bigger when he used to shift if I remember right, but Austin was always a little bigger than everyone else." He started to clean some of the wounds, paying special attention to the cigarette burns when he realized what they were. It took a real asshole to abuse an animal.

"Here," he said as he handed Julian the tube of antibacterial ointment. He plucked Julian up and held him so that he could reach the puppy in the tub. "Rub a little bit of that on those red spots. Be gentle, okay?"

Julian was more than happy to help out and do as Jacob suggested once he was scooped up and held over the edge of the tub. After he got a bit of ointment onto one of his fingers, he reached down and gently put it on the wounds that Jacob had indicated, taking care to be gentle. The puppy squirmed a little and made a little whine, and Julian drew his hand back.

"Am I hurting him?" he asked as he looked up at Jacob in worry.

"You're helping him, but it probably hurts a little. But that cream will make sure he doesn't get an infection. If germs get in there, he could get very sick." Jacob's patience had grown since Parker was born and his desire to teach had increased as well. He wanted to leave some knowledge behind.

When the wounds were wall dressed and cared for, Jacob went back to trying to get the puppy to drink some water. "He's thirsty. He must have been trying to get down to the river for something to drink." The puppy lapped at Jacob's hand, pulling the water from it.

Julian nodded his head and continued to gently put the ointment on. When he was done, he sat back in Jacob's lap and watched as the little puppy drank water from Jacob's hand. He leaned his head agaisnt Jacob's shoulder, and it was obvious that he was all ready attached to the little animal.

"Can we keep him?" he asked softly.

"We?" Jacob frowned. "I'm not a dog person, kiddo. And I already have a puppy--well, a baby but it's just like a puppy." Jacob could already feel his resolve wearing down though and Julian wasn't even doing that much to persuade him yet.

Shifting Julian from his lap, he reached in to gather the little dog back up again. "We can make a bed for him out of some blankets and pillows. He'll need a lot of rest."

"Well can you keep him until he gets better? Maybe Daddy and Papa will let me keep him at our house," Julian suggested as he stared up at Jacob, his eyes going a little glassy. He couldn't imagine giving the puppy to anyone else now that he had him sitting in the tub. "I think you'd take care of him best, though," he added, lowering his gaze back down to the puppy.

The puppy looked like he might grow up big, with oversized paws. Maybe if they did keep him around, he could sic him on Duke. That was a mean thought, but an honest one. Not that he would ever do that, but it was fun to imagine putting Duke in his damn place.

Jacob sighed and stood up, heading for the door so he could go downstairs and make a proper bed for the thing. "Oh all right. But he better not get too comfortable in this house. He's going straight into your care once he's strong enough."

Julian got up to his feet and moved to follow Jacob out into the hall. He could hear Kinley in one of the rooms, and he was careful to be quiet just in case she was trying to put Parker down for a nap. Joshua had taught him that being quiet when Miah was a baby was very important, so it was easy for Julian to fall back into the habit.

"Where are you gonna keep him?" Julian asked softly as he reached up to grab a hold of Jacob's shirt.

"In the oven," Jacob deadpanned, eying Julian to see if he believed it. But before much damage could be done, he shook his head. "Kidding. I'll keep him in the laundry room. It'll be quiet and out of the way so he can recuperate. Make sure you come and visit him a lot so he gets used to you. Do you think Jeremiah will like him?" Jacob hadn't had much time to involve himself with the goings on of the main house, but he knew enough to know that the little boy wasn't doing all too well emotionally.

Julian's brow wrinkled up in confusion when Jacob answered with the word oven, but when the bigger wolf told him that he was only joking, Julian's expression changed back to a more relaxed one.

"I think so," he said softly as he stared up at the puppy's tail that was hanging out from beneath one of Jacob's arms. "Miah really likes Duke, so I think he will like the puppy a lot. Maybe it will cheer him up."

"Let's hope so." Jacob couldn't help but think that that would have been the way he'd reacted to trauma. He had the tendency to take even small things pretty hard when he was a child, so something as traumatic as a kidnapping probably would have sent him into himself. "Maybe you can have him come help take care of him while he's healing. Maybe helping someone else will help him too."

Jacob handed the puppy over to Julian and dug around in the linen closet, having the feeling that Kinley was going to be annoyed by the use of the blankets, but maybe once she saw the cute puppy, she'd be all right with it. Better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. Gathering a few, he led them into the laundry room, which was small and warm.

Julian nodded his head emphatically. To him, that was a great idea. Maybe seeing the puppy and helping him would make Jeremiah feel a little bit better.

"I will have to think of a name for him," Julian said softly as he took the puppy in his arms and held onto him as best as he could. The little guy was falling asleep, but he seemed content for the moment. "Something really good."

"And soon, because the sooner you have a name for him, the sooner he can start learning it." It was best to start early. Dropping the blankets on the floor, he arranged them carefully and then gestured for Julian to place the puppy in the middle of them. It looked so comfortable and Jacob had considered shifting and finding a nook like that in the woods to get some real sleep. He couldn't be expected to get up and feed the baby if he was a wolf, right? He was pretty sure that Kinley would find a way.

"You should help out with Parker sometime too. He'll need people to look up to, people to follow around and pester."

Julian lowered himself down onto his knees so that he could lean forward and tuck the puppy away within the blankets and covers. The little guy curled right up and yawned, a very big yawn, and it made Julian giggle a little bit before he looked up at Jacob.

"What's he gonna eat?" he asked curiously before he looked back down at the puppy and gently pet the top of it's head. At the mention of helping out with Parker, he returned the attention of his big blue eyes to Jacob. "I'm good at helping, Joshua says so. And I don't mind being pestered." At least not yet, anyway. Maybe when he was older, that would change, but Julian seemed to have a sort of nurturing quality about him that would more than likely carry into the rest of his life.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Jacob had picked up on that nurturing quality and perhaps it was because he had that in himself. Jacob, however, consistently tried to cover it up with sharp barbs and snotty behavior. "Well, I suppose I'll need to head into town and buy some soft puppy food. I think he's too old for milk. It looks like he's at least been weened." But he knew the little guy couldn't handle the dry food that Ever fed to his dog.

"Did you help with Miah when he was little?" Jacob knew the boys were close in age, but he figured Julian could remember when Miah was born.
