julian/austin

While Julian was doing rather well, he still had nightmares like every other little boy every now and then, though his nightmares were about Joseph, Kenneth, and Mike taking away people that he depended on and cared about. When he wokeup from another bad dream, he was crying a little bit and he crawled out of bed to go look for Hunter, Wendell, or Joshua. Once he was out in the hall, the dark scared him and the only source of light was spilling out from underneath Austin's door so he went over to it and started to cry softly.

Austin was up late, studying, as per usual. He had a lot of work with school and because he'd been taking time to help Joshua build the surprise tree house for the two little ones, he had been falling a little bit behind. When he heard the crying he put his book down and got up from the bed to go and get the door. Sullivan was sleeping in his bed, out like a light and he knew that no amount of rustling around was going to wake the other wolf. In just his pajama bottoms and a pair of reading glasses, he padded over to the door and pulled it open so he could see what was going on in the hallway.

When the door opened up, Julian looked up at him with a red tear streaked face. He sniffled and rubbed at one of his eyes before he lifted his arms up in Austin's direction.

"It's dark," he said softly. "I had a bad dream."

Normally the dark didn't bother him so much, but after a bad dream he always felt vulnerable, and the dark scared him.

"Well do you want me to walk you somewhere in the house or would you like to come in here?" Austin wasn't sure what to say to him at that point, he really didn't know what to do with the little boy because he hadn't ever taken the time to get to know either one of them.

Julian frowned when Austin didn't pick him up. Usually when he put his arms up at anyone, they'd oblige him and scoop him up, even Jacob. He sniffed again and dropped his arms down to his sides as he started to cry a little more.

"You have a light on," he said softly.

It took Austin an extra few beats to catch on but then he leaned down and scooped Julian up into his arms. "Do you want me to walk you back to your room or do you want to come in here and sit with me for a little while?" He wasn't sure if he should have Julian sitting in his room while he tried to study, the little boy was going to distract him, but he couldn't tell him no.

"I wanna stay with you," Julian mumbled softly as he clung to Austin. His crying had quieted down, and when he saw Sullivan in Austin's bed he let his head rest against Austin's shoulder. "Sulvan's in here," he said as he lifted a hand to point at the other wolf.

Austin looked over his shoulder at Sullivan and then he carried Julian over to the bed to put the little boy down in the space between where he had been sitting and where Sullivan was still laying. "Yes, he is. Sullivan sleeps in here most nights." he sat back down in his spot and picked up his book to put it on the nightstand so it was out of the way.

Sometimes Sullivan gave Julian cereal in the morning, and Julian tried to follow him around, but he inevitably got distracted or Sullivan gave him the slip. He sat down on the bed and crossed his legs as he looked up at Austin.

"Are you my Uncle?" he asked quietly.

"Yes, I am." He was now, he supposed. Because the boys looked up to Hunter and Wendell as their fathers, so he was by default an uncle. "What sort of dream were you having?" Austin brushed his fingertips across Julian's cheeks to try and mop up the tears that still streaked down his face.

Austin saying that yes, he was his uncle, seemed to be all that Julian needed to hear to relax and feel more at ease around the older wolf. He sniffed and let Austin wipe at his cheeks, and he swallowed hard.

"About the bad men who took Jeremiah and Daddy and Vance away," he said softly.

Julian hadn't been taken, but he had been there, and seeing people he trusted as well as loved being abducted right in front of him had definitely scarred him.

"That's not going to happen again." He rubbed his hand against the side of Julian's arm and he just tried to comfort him a little, though this was a tad on the awkward side for Austin because he didn't really know what to do with children. Robin had always been the youngest wolf in the pack and he was only a few years younger than himself and Sullivan. And of course Hannah and Jordan but Shane kept them away from him.

Julian balled his hand up into a tiny fist and rubbed at one of his eyes before he moved to crawl up onto Austin's lap so that he could hold onto him.

"That's what Papa said but I still have the dreams," he said softly. He had stopped crying, though, and his gaze was settled on Sullivan. "He's snoring a little," he added as he reached out to gently pinch Sullivan's nose. The older wolf swatted at his hand and rolled over, and Julian drew his hand back before he looked up at Austin. "How come you're not sleepin?"

Austin was surprised when Julian climbed into his lap but he just moved to lay back so that the little boy could lay on top of him. He figured that the nearness of another wolf probably was comforting. "I was studying." he said, taking off his glasses to put them on the night stand. "Are you going to be able to fall asleep if I turn off the light?"

"What were you studying?" Julian asked as he got comfortable on Austin's chest. There was a pull about him that reminded Julian of Hunter, and it was comforting as he buried his face against the older boy's shoulder. "I don't know, I don't like the dark."

Austin reached up to the lamp and he swiveled the head around so that it was facing away from the bed but still on. So it was darker but not pitch black. That way he could sleep, even if Julian couldn't, if it came to that. "I'm studying math and science." he didn't specify what, he didn't think the little boy would get it anyway.

After a moment, Julian slid off of Austin's chest a little bit so that he was snug between Austin and Sullivan. He stayed facing Austin, though, and he curled his legs up to his chest as he stuck his thumb into his mouth. It wasn't very long before he started to doze off, tucked safely in between Austin and Sullivan.
