open to Varick
After Pirate had patched he and Varick up, Kingston had packed them upstairs in their bedroom and set to work with getting rid of Kenneth's body. He was going to bury it with Pirate's help, and while Vance wanted to go, someone had to stay behind just to keep an eye on the two injured ones upstairs.

The house was quiet and it was dark when Shannon came around. He was in a pair of pajama bottoms, and nothing else. His arm, though it was on it's way to healing, was aching somethng awful and he curled up even closer to Varick as a quiet noise of discomfort escaped him. It felt like it was snowing outside, and when he lifted his head up to look towards the window he wasn't surprised to see flakes falling. He settled his head back down and pressed in close to the wolf beside him as a quiet yawn escaped his lips.

Eventually he drifted off back to sleep, and Kingston came inside from burying Kenneth in the woods. He went over to check on the two sleeping in the bed, and he couldn't help but press a cold hand against Varick's shoulder just to get a feel for how Varick was doing.

Varick hadn't slept any, but when Shannon woke up, he was quiet. Deep in thought, he laid there and stared at the wall across from them. His body was throbbing and he could hardly move so it wasn't exactly difficult to lie motionless. Kenneth was dead and all Varick could think of was if he could have killed him sooner maybe Cameron would be alive. No, he finally decided, joseph wouldn't have stopped without Kenneth backing him up.

When Kingston touched his shoulder he knew the wolf well enough to know what was on his mind. "I'm okay," he said though his voice sounded hollow. Perhaps the largest thing keeping Varick from the alpha personality was his lack of ability for killing. Even Kenneth, even knowing the things he'd done.

Kingston sat down on the edge of the bed, and he let his hand gently slide down the side of Varick's uninjured shoulder. No matter how strong Varick was acting, Kingston could feel that little bit of despair seeping through and it worried him.

"You did what you had to do," he said very quietly. "And not only are you alive because of it, Shannon is too. Cameron would be very proud. Protecting Shannon is what he asked you to do, isn't it?"

Varick nodded. Those words comforted him and some of the tension in his muscles expelled. He relaxed against the bed and looked down at Shannon. He loved him so very much and the thought of losing him was unbearable. Smoothing his hand through the young man's hair. "I'm glad he'd dead, ultimately. I still don't want to go back there though, that house, that land. I'm working on transfering to another firm in the area. We can start over someplace else."

Kingston wanted to take the lead over the pack, but he wasn't sure how to even begin. He was still so young, and while Hunter had been young, he wasn't sure he had it in him like the alpha of the Cold Water pack had. There was a lot of life Kingston hadn't lived, and many things he hadn't learned. He found himself wishing he'd paid more attention to his father, and listened better.

"I want to be ready to be Alpha, I'm just not sure how to do it," he said quietly after a moment. "I'm not even sure what direction I'd want to take the pack in." And by that, he meant what type of leader he wanted to be. Did he want to be like Hunter, or his father, or something else? It was so hard to say. "There's strong wolves in the Cold Water pack, ones that I can learn from." Like Hunter, Sigmund, and Louisa though Kingston wasn't sure if she was part of the Cold Water pack just yet, or if she was still on her own.

"It shows how close you are to being ready the fact you know you're not ready," he said fondly. Varick had always been very impressed with Kingston, looking at him like a son or little brother. He adored him. "You want to go and live with the Coldwater Pack? It would be good for you to be around alphas, I suppose. I can't teach you much more about being older or running a pack."

"Maybe," Kingston answered as he smoothed a hand down along Varick's arm as he turned his attention to Shannon. "There's a fox there, he's not really with their pack, I don't think. But I've been spending time with him. I brought him by here, you were busy but I think he went on a run with Shannon."

Varick could imagine that it would be a good idea, but he wasn't sure he liked it. He wanted to stay and hide out at Garrett's house. While he knew he was welcome, he knew this wasn't 'home.' Leaning his head back against the headboard, Varick knew his place was with Kingston. "I assume Hunter is all right with taking us in? Is there even room? I don't suppose we're a very large pack. We don't take up much space anymore." That felt so depressing to say.

"There's room, yeah," Kingston answered as he watched Shannon sleep. After a moment, he returned his attention to Varick's face and he smiled faintly. "I think you'd like a lot of their pack members. They're a good, strong pack." And Hunter was a definite strong leader, and Kingston wished that his father had been more like the man. His father had a soft heart in a lot of ways, and Kingston felt that he should have dealth with Joseph in different ways.

"I'm sure they are." He had no doubt in Kingston's judgment of people. "I'm just worried--scared--" he shook his head, disliking that that was true. He was scared that living with another pack would bring the type of wolf back into their lives that might hurt them again. He didn't have it in him to deal with another betrayal.

"What's this other fox like?"

"His name is Cady," Kingston replied, knowing fully well just what Varick was worried about. He had full confidence that when the wolf met Hunter, all of his worries would be quelled, though. "He's quiet, sweet. A little shy. I think he's the one for me," he added honestly before he paused. "No, I know he is."

Varick was surprised that he hadn't caught that before Kingston had admitted it. His mind was stretched pretty thin at the moment though. "Cady," he repeated thoughtfully. "A fox." That amused him and very briefly he smiled. "Well then that's where you belong and we belong with you."

Shannon stirred a little bit, and he let out a quiet sigh against the side of Varick's neck. Kingston smoothed a hand over the fox's hair before he gave Varick a gently pat on his good shoulder.

"I'll leave you two alone now," he said softly, "I think we're waking him up."

"You are," Shannon murmured.

"You were supposed to help me stay awake," he said fondly. Pirate had warned him of a concussion, but Varick was sure the wolf in him could handle it. He'd never heard of a werewolf succumbing to injuries after a battle. To hear Shannon's voice was a thing of sheer relief, confirmation that he was okay. Varick's body relaxed further.

"You were very brave," he said quietly, rolling toward Shannon and putting an arm around him.

"I'm sorry," Shannon whispered softly with a sleepy smile. He let an arm drift around Varick's waist when the wolf faced him, and a quiet sigh escaped him. At Varick's next words, he lowered his gaze a little and shook his head some. "I sort of panicked and led him right to you."

"Better than you leading him away from me and off by yourself. I told you I'd protect you, but apparently I'm not all that vigilant." But he knew he couldn't strap Shannon to his hip for the rest of their lives, though the thought now certainly crossed his mind. So it was good to know that Shannon had fight in him.

"How are you feeling?" he smoothed his hand across Shannon's face, tilting his head back so he could look into his eyes. He didn't know what he was looking for, but he saw Pirate do it when he was first examining the man.

"Apparently neither am I," Shannon replied as he reached up to gently brush his thumb against Varick's lower lip. "I didn't even know he was in the house until he had a hold of me." He should have been paying more attention, but at least they were safe now. "How are you feeling?"

"Kenneth is--was very good at a stalking his prey," he said in a dark voice. It made him uncomfortable to even think about it. "I'm feeling all right, a bit sore." The scratches and bruises were getting better already, but the deeper injuries were still aching. It would be a few days, maybe even a week before he was in top condition again.

"Did you hear much about what we were talking about, Kingston and I?" He was not the type to tell a lover that they were moving. He wanted to ask and see what Shannon thought.

"Not really, no," Shannon said quietly as he stretched his legs some so that he could wiggle his toes. He winced faintly, his body achey, though his arm hurt the most out of everything. It was bandaged up nicely thanks to Pirate, and though it was on it's way to healing, it throbbed something awful.

"About where we all go from here," he summarized succinctly. "What was Cady like?" It seemed like a change of subject, though it all went along with Varick's train of thought even if Shannon might not have followed it. Varick was curious about the other fox, wanting to know exactly who Kingston was talking about like a mate. The one for me. Varick made it a point to know these things about Kingston.

Shannon didn't quite follow, and he furrowed his brow a little bit as he dipped his head forward to press his face against Varick's chest.

"He's kind of quiet, I think he's so use to having nobody. He lost his parents and Aubrey is a little rough around the edges, from what I understand. But he seems sweet, kind of shy. He needs stability, I guess."

"Aubrey?" he tipped his head, leaning up onto his elbow so he could look down at Shannon. "Is he at Wolf Haven too?" He knew that Aubrey was a fox, had taken note of his successful artwork, but he didn't realize that the man ever went to Coldwater Flats.

"I don't think he's part of their pack," Shannon answered as he rolled onto his back so that he could look up at Varick. "I know he goes there, though. I think he is seeing one of the wolves, and he's the one who's been taking care of Cady though now I guess Kingston takes care of Cady." He lifted a hand to rub at one of his eyes sleepily as he yawned. "Aubrey doesn't like Kingston much."

"Then I don't suppose I'll like Aubrey very much." It was half joking, half serious. "Kingston thinks it would be a good idea for us to live there." He wasn't sure how frank he should be about Kingston's misgivings about his own readiness, so he glossed over that fact. "I'm sure Garrett would like to have his house back in order," he said, knowing that wasn't true in the least. His brother didn't mind them being there, but Varick was starting to worry that they'd overstay their welcome someday.

"Live there?" Shannon asked in slight surprise. He kind of liked where he was, but wherever Varick was, that was where he would be. "Like, part of their pack? Are we not going to try and rebuild our pack?" he added as he furrowed his brow some. He liked Cady, and while the wolves had been nice when he'd gone to see Cassidy, he still felt a little overwhelmed by the idea of transitioning into another pack.

"No. No we're never going to be a part of any pack but our own." Of this, Varick was certain. He did not want to amalgamate into another pack; it felt like a betrayal of Kingston's father and of the ones they had lost. "But we can live there until we all get back on our feet and until Kingston figures out what he wants to do. He needs to have examples of leadership. I'm nothing like an alpha. He's still young." There was no way around saying it like that because it was the truth and the very basis for why it was the best choice to go to Coldwater. "I wonder if there are any law firms hiring in town. I'd prefer not to commute. Maybe I shouldn't even go back to work for awhile longer."

Shannon felt a little bit better, knowing that they weren't just going to become a part of the Coldwater pack, but he still wasn't entirely sure about picking up and leaving Garrett's. Garrett was pack, so he knew that they were welcome. Coldwater, he wasn't so sure about, no matter how nice Hunter seemed to be. He wanted to ask if Garrett was anything like an alpha, but he knew that Garrett was too passionate and loyal to his work to be able to give himself up to such a position. It was a lot to take on.

"How much longer? Are you sure you won't get sick of spending all your time with me, if you haven't all ready?" Shannon asked softly with a half smile.

"I'm certain that I won't be getting tired of your company anytime soon. I used to wish you'd spend more time with Cameron and me, but you always seemed to have something to do." Granted, he realized the reasoning behind that now and it was terribly satisfying when he thought about that fact minus Cameron's death.

"We should get there as soon as we can, I think. The sooner we're there, the sooner we'll settle in and get on with our lives."

Knowing that Varick had wanted him around more often, even back then, made Shannon smile softly though he'd give just about anything to have Cameron back. Maybe even this, what he had with Varick now, something that he'd always wanted. It was difficult to think about, and either scenario made him feel guilty so he just dipped his head down to press it up against Varick's chest.

"All right," he said softly. "Where ever you and Kingston are, I'll be."

Varick reached over and tugged Shannon close, rolling onto his back so that Shannon rolled on top of him. The slight weight was pleasant and Varick shut his eyes. "You can be my blanket," he said with contentment. Talking about the future was calming to him. He liked planning and organizing, especially when the present felt so very uncertain.

Shannon was careful not to jar his arm nor Varick's shoulder as he settled on top of the wolf. He smiled and pressed a kiss to the curve of Varick's shoulder with a smile. He wiggled his legs and let out a contented smile, enjoying the warmth that was seeping into his bones from Varick's body.

"I think you're keeping me warm, still," he whispered.

"Hopefully I can always be counted on to do at least that," he said softly, smoothing his hand down Shannon's back. "Maybe there will be enough room for a work room. We can go get fabric and thread and things before we leave Seattle." Whenever Cameron had drug him to the fabric store, Varick would kind of zone out, not understanding a great deal about what made a garment pop. He just picked what he liked and Cameron made clothes for him or told him what looked good. Now he wished he'd spent every moment paying attention to every last thing Cam had said in his lifetime.

Shannon tipped his face downwards so that he could press a kiss against Varick's collarbone as he laid on top of him. It never ceased to amaze him just how comfortable the other man could be, no matter what, as if he'd been made just for loungin on or with.

"That'd be nice," he murmured quietly against the wolf's skin.

"I think maybe I can sleep now, but don't tell Pirate," he said dozily. Varick hadn't known him for very long, but he could immediately tell that Pirate was not the sort of man he wanted to tangle with if he could help it. Shannon fit on top of him perfectly, and he carded his hand through the young man's hair.

Shannon smiled softly and he lifted his head up so that he could press a soft kiss to Varick's mouth.

"I won't tell," he promised, as if he really had to say so outloud, and he settled his head back down. "Go ahead and sleep, I'll just listen to your heart beat." At least for a while, to make sure that Varick was all right.

Even though Shannon was much smaller, Varick felt very protected by him in that moment and it was a nice feeling. Sometimes it wasn't about feeling perfectly safe, but about feeling as if someone would fight for you no matter what. Varick knew he had that with Shannon and he smiled as he closed his eyes.
