Morris was very bad at reading the living. It seemed as if a heartbeat threw him off. It had been that way his whole life and he'd eventually stopped trying to connect with people. Shiloh's shyness was alluring though, like someone running away, shrinking and in need of protection. Morris liked to rescue. Even if he felt disconnected from humanity, he had the urge to save it. That was why he'd become an EMT.
Bernie put her hand on Shiloh's shoulder, amused by his body's reaction. "You're making his blood pressure go up." She laughed, doing nothing to keep the boy's reactions under wraps. That made Morris look surprised and it was clear that expression didn't come to his face often. Bernie pushed Shiloh forward. "I'm going to go eat someone else. Shiloh, I'll be back for you later. Stay with this nice stranger here." Like dropping a kid off at daycare.
