To Kellen
Quillan hadn't slept a great deal, but he'd gotten a couple of hours. When he woke up the next morning, he found himself pressed close to Kellen and immediately his heart started to race and he carefully tried to extract himself from the other without waking him up. He was, however, tempted to just stay there and enjoy the warmth. Kellen radiated heat and Quillan found that he liked it very much.

But he couldn't stay there, and he got out of bed, starting to pack up their things. Staying overnight someplace had been necessary, even though he would have liked to keep moving. Lighting anywhere for too long was a dangerous risk in their case. When he was ready to go, he touched Kellen's shoulder. "Kellen? We should probably get going."

Kellen had slept like the absolute dead. Being in a bed again, with a full stomach and fresh clothes, a bath, and someone there next to him had done wonders. He'd knocked right out, and when he felt Quillan shaking him awake gently he rolled over and stretched a little as he rubbed his hand over his eyes.

"All right, gimme a minute," he murmured sleepily before he yawned. "Bathroom," he added before he got up to go get himself ready.

It was only a few minutes before he came back out, looking much more awake and ready to go. He'd even managed to tame some of his hair, though sleeping on it wet hadn't done him much good. It still looked like a mop.

Quillan liked Kellen's hair like that and if he wasn't so worried about their safety, he would have been musing over the fact that he wanted to run his fingers through that mop. "We can abandon the car here. There's a bus that runs farther west and then we can duck into the woods and walk the rest of the way. Are you sure you can make it?" He was worried that maybe one night hadn't been enough. But he also knew that they couldn't risk staying longer so it was probably a moot concern.

Kellen was starving, but he couldn't wait to get to the haven. He couldn't wait to see Kieran, and the rest of his pack. He needed to see for himself that they were safe and sound, and he was antsy now that he'd gotten a full night's rest.

"All right," he nodded, "I'll be a little slow but when I shift I'll be fine," he assured as he hobbled towards the door. "It'll actually help me heal."

Quillan nodded and headed out. On their way to the bus stop, he was sure to provide Kellen with something to lean on. He also stopped at a coffee stand to buy a few scones and a couple bottles of water for the ride.

The bus wasn't crowded, and Quillan led Kellen to the back where they could sit huddled in a corner. Being around people was making him nervous because each face he saw, his brain thought it was Rex and that he'd found them. He was certain that the man would find some way to kill them both on sight, even if meant sacrificing his ultimate plan to get at the Coldwater pack. "I've never actually paid any attention to the city," he commented.

Kellen took full advantage of Quillan's offer as a crutch, and once they settled at the back of the bus it was obvious that he was a little exhausted all over again. He was aching to shift, and he knew it would feel good once he was able to. Instead of taking one of the scones from Quillan, he sort of just leaned against the man with his head on his shoulder as his gaze flickered to the window.

"It's pretty here," he said softly, "The haven's really pretty, too."

"Shifting isn't just going to take more out of you? It looks so painful." He spoke in a low voice, making sure that no one could overhear what they were saying. The few people on the bus were on their commute to work, and hardly cared about the two weary looking men in the back of the bus. Of course he didn't quite understand all the mechanics of being a wolf. Rex knew those things, but he was more concerned with teaching Quillan to hate rather than to understand.

Kellen shook his head as he closed his eyes and just tried to catch his breath. He couldn't wait to shift. Part of the pain he was feeling was from holding off for too long, and not just from his injuries.

"It'll hurt, but I've been doing it for years now so it's smoother for me than the younger ones. Once it's over, I'll feel a lot better," he mumbled. "It's kind of like... Waiting for your ears to pop. It drives you nuts, but when they do, it's like... Amazing, you know?"

Quillan hadn't had too many opportunities to laugh in the past week or so and to hear Kellen describe shifting like ears popping made him bark laughter with the sudden humor. He couldn't help himself, and covered his mouth at the last minute to muffle it and not draw as much attention. The comparison made perfect sense to him. It was as clear as Kellen could describe it.

"This is just one of the many reasons you make a great dad," he exhaled when he'd regained his sobriety. Quillan had been watching the father and son interact for longer than he was prepared to admit.

Hearing Quillan say that meant more than he'd ever know. One thing Kellen worked very hard at was being a good father to Kieran, and knowing that other people saw that made him feel like he was accomplishing something great.

"Thank you," he said softly with a smile, finding that he liked the sound of Quillan's laugh.

Finally he sat up some to grab a scone so that he could have something in his belly, and he let his gaze sweep around the bus. Everyone seemed in their own little world.

"Kieran's my world," he said after a moment. "His mother and I were best friends, and we just sort of... Had one night that wasn't suppose to be anything, and he came along, and he means everything."

He watched him eat, finding that he liked it quite a bit. He wanted to take care of Kellen, feed him, make sure he was safe, be the person he relied on. Maybe it was just because he wanted to pay him back for the pain he'd caused, and maybe it was something much deeper. "What happened to her? Did it not work out between the two of you?"

Kellen was a very sweet and kind hearted person, and he took care of everyone around him it seemed. Especially Kieran. It would be good for him to have someone take care of him sometimes, though he hadn't ever really given that sort of thing much thought.

"She died while giving birth, it was a complicated pregnancy," he said quietly, "We were going to raise Kieran together. I mean, not us together like a couple but just... Both of us, taking care of him. Like roommates, I guess."

Quillan had never really had the opportunity to date people. He'd never even had the opportunity to be attracted to them, except for maybe Rex. But that had been a fleeting crush, replaced quickly by the importance of their work and the arduous task of learning the trade.

"Not like a couple?" He didn't quite understand. The bus came to a halt then, interrupting their conversation when Quillan realized it was their stop. He sighed, wanting to find out more about Kellen's past, even if it sounded terribly sad. He got up and helped the other to his feet, heading down the steps of the bus and to the ground. They were the only ones getting off at this particular stop.

"Yeah, I'm more into men, the thing with her was just a one time sort of fluke and we got Kieran out of it," Kellen said with a tired smile.

He'd give anything to have his best friend back, anything but Kieran, and he sometimes felt guilty over that fact but he knew she wouldn't have wanted it any other way either.

When the bus came to a stop, Kellen dusted his hands off as he finished the scone, and then he got to his feet to allow Quillan to help him off of the bus. It was a little chilly outside, and rainy, but Kellen found that he'd missed the feel of the cool air and the smell of rain.

Quillan resisted the silly urge to point out that he was a man. He was sure that Kellen had already noticed Quillan was a guy. "We're in Sequim," he opted for instead, keeping it down to business. "Coldwater is Southwest of here a ways." He pointed over the highway and down through the woods. "That way."

He was getting anxious to see Kellen out in the open as a wolf. He wanted to test his own metal against the fear and loathing that had been trained into him.

Kellen had definitely noticed. He was a slight man, very slender and thin, wirey almost like Wendell. Wendell seemed even more thin, though, somehow. Kellen loved to send the other wolf clothes because Wen had a very certain style about him, and Kellen loved when he saw something that screamed Wendell and he'd just send it to the other wolf. He wondered if Wendell ever wore them, though. He wasn't around the haven as much as he would have liked to have really known or not.

Kellen liked that Quillan wasn't as slim as he was. He had a little more muscle, not a whole lot, but enough to make Kellen appreciate it.

"All right," Kellen said softly as he took a hold of Quillan's hand so that they could cross the highway and slip down into the woods.

Holding the hand like a lifeline, Quillan trucked across the highway and then helped Kellen over the barrier. The tree line started to get thick almost immediately, and soon enough, they were hidden from the road entirely. Quillan would never get used to that thick, dark cover of coniferous trees. It made him feel trapped. Quillan liked wide open spaces.

"Is there a good spot to do it?" He was referring to a shift. "I can--I can wait here."

"You don't have to - I can do it here, it's fine," Kellen said softly with a nervous smile.

Shifting was no big deal, he'd done it so many times before. It was Quillan that was making his stomach flutter. Shifting in front of pack was one thing, but a human? He'd done it in the cage, but this felt so much different, like he was initiating Quillan into his world somehow.

"If want me to go away and do it I can," he added hastily, "I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

Part of him leaped at the chance to send Kellen away to shift. But he shook his head. No, he wanted to see it take place. He wanted to own up to the truth about the other man and that it wasn't a bad truth. Simply a fact.

He braced himself. Getting into his scientific mind. This was a natural process because it occurred in nature. Rex had been wrong. It wasn't a warping of humanity, it was something else entirely. Something separate and unique all in its own right. "Go ahead," he nodded once he felt ready.

Kellen nodded his head a little bit before he slipped out of the sweatpants. His feet were all ready bare, something he hadn't noticed because he was so comfortable being barefoot. He was sure he'd gotten some looks on the bus, though. He folded up the pants and handed them to Quillan, too.

"When we get close, I can change back to get dressed," he said softly.

He'd been naked in front of Quillan a lot, sure, but again this felt different. He shivered a little bit before he drew in a deep breath and lowered himself down to the ground in a crouching position. He pushed his nerves back and let his wolf roll up to the surface, and it wasn't long before the shift took over. It was an ugly sight, yet strangely unique and beautiful at the same time. It was disturbing, but magnificent all at once. The bones cracking to reshape made an awful sound, and it looked like it was probably the most painful thing in the world. By the end of it, though, Kellen was a lovely looking wolf. Slim, lean, and a whitish grey color with warm brown eyes.

It took a moment for him to catch his breath, but only a moment, and he was on his feet to shake his coat out. It felt amazing to be outside of a cage, and his tail was swishing back and forth happily.

Quillan winced and tried not to turn away from the morphing body, but he couldn't help it at first. His eyes squeezed shut and his stomach churned uncomfortably at the sound of ligaments and bones snapping. But he mustered more courage and finally opened his eyes to see the last movements and then there was a wolf in front of him.

He'd crouched down on the ground because his knees felt weak and now he was eye level with the wolf. There was something profoundly different about Kellen being out of the cage and it made this form many times more beautiful than before. "Hi," he said meekly.

Kellen could sense that Quillan was uncomfortable and a little nervous. But the man wasn't running away and that was a good thing, right? Not that a hunter like Quillan would, but the human part of Kellen had worried about being rejected. When Quillan knelt down, Kellen put his head down and approached him carefully. He nuzzled at one of Quillan's hands and licked as his tail wagged.

He relaxed even more as soon as Kellen touched him. It was sweet and made him smile. Being afraid of the wolf seemed silly to him now. There was nothing savage about him. He knelt there for a few more moments and then stood so that they could get going. Time was of the essence and he wanted to get Kellen safely back to the haven.

"Lead the way," he encouraged, hoping he could heep up. Kellen looked like he felt much better.

When Quillan relaxed, Kellen could tell, and he kept on nuzzling against the man's hand. When Quillan stood up, the wolf turned and yipped once before he started to lead the way. He was very concious of Quillan, though, and he went slow as to not lose the man in the thick woods and brush. He didn't even pause to try and figure out which way he needed to go, and eventually his ears led him to the creek so that they could follow the water to the haven.

He was in awe of how Kellen moved. He'd seen mutts and they were hunched over creatures, moving with fear and skittishness. Either that, or they were lurching monsters. Kellen was neither of these things.

Quillan followed him diligently, relieved when they came to water because he stopped briefly to drink with his hands. "I suspect you can smell the way, or sense it. It's fascinating." He felt like he was speaking to himself, even though he knew Kellen could understand him.

When Quillan paused to get a drink, Kellen decided a drink would be nice, too. He lapped at the cool water before he lifted his head up and let his tongue dip out and over his nose to catch any left over droplets of the liquid. He looked up at Quillan and sat, deciding to give the man a break, and it was obvious from his panting that he didn't mind the break in the least.

After a few minutes, he got up and licked at Quillan's hand before he started to lead the way again. It took about three hours before they reached the edge of the haven, and Kellen laid down. He was exhausted, but he wanted to shift back into his human form so that he could communicate with everyone and most of all Kieran, when he saw the little boy. It took a few minutes for him to push the shift, and it was a lot harder going back so soon when he was so tired.

Shifting back was by far the stranger of the two directions. Where once was a wolf was now a naked man. Quillan just stood there, holding Kellen's clothes, just staring. His brain wasn't working properly and he didn't think to maybe hand the clothes over to him.

After a second though, he jumped, as if his brain had kicked into gear. "Oh! These! Here!" He blurted and shoved the clothes at Kellen. God, why was it so different now?

"Thank you," Kellen said softly in between quiet pants.

He felt so tired, but amazingly relieved. And God, he was starving. He tugged on the pants first, and then the sweatshirt before he reached out to use Quillan's shoulder as crutch. Shifting had helped heal some wounds, but not all of them, and two shifts so close together had taken a lot out of him.

"I think I need your help the rest of the way, is that all right?" he asked as he tipped his head up to meet Quillan's eyes.

Quillan nodded quickly. "Of course," he said in earnest and placed his hand at the small of Kellen's back to steady him. All of this was going to be worth the moment he got to watch the boy and his father reunite.

Now his nerves were because he was afraid of what the pack would do when they discovered who he was. He would deserve all of their disdain and he would bear it. But he also trusted what Kellen said and that they would not harm him. He walked the two of them forward, heading out of the tree line and toward the collection of houses.

"Thank you," Kellen mumbled softly as he looped an arm around Quillan's neck.

The other man was solid, and he smelled good, even after walking through the woods for three hours. Kellen very much wanted to curl up with him again and just sleep, but when the houses came into view his heart leapt and he tried to quicken their pace up a bit. The thought of seeing Kieran again was making him tear up, and he had to swallow hard to hold them back.

"That house," he said as he pointed at Ever and Emmy's home, knowing that's where Kieran would be.

Jacob had Cooper over at the house, watching Kieran and the baby at the same time. Hey, what else was he going to do? Cooper was resting face down on his chest while Jacob flipped through the television channels. He was trying to find Dora the Explorer, or Spongebob for Kieran to watch and so that Jacob could zone out.

Quillan knocked on the door and Jacob found the exceptionally odd because no one knocked around these parts. He'd even managed to train Wendell out of it a little. With Cooper slung on his hip, still resting his head sleepily against Jacob's shoulder, he answered the door and was shocked to find Kellen. "Holy shit. Kieran!" He called out to the little boy.

When Kellen first went missing, Kieran had been adamant that everyone needed to band together to find him. But as time passed and he was gone longer and longer, Kieran grew more withdrawn and sullen. Most days he didn't even talk to anyone anymore and the only time he let anyone touch him was when he woke up from a nightmare and needed to be comforted. Today he was just sitting on the floor, mindlessly zoning out as Jacob flipped channels. He was staring at the tv, even after Jacob left it on QVC while he went to get the door. It wasn't until he heard his own name that he sort of snapped out of it. It took him a moment to get himself up and he just shuffled towards the door. But when he got close enough to see Kellen his whole face lit up and he bounded across the room and practically jumped up into his arms.

"Daddy!" he cried out, clinging to him as best he could. "Don't leave me again? Where were you! No one could find you!"

Kellen opened his mouth to say something to Jacob, but when Jacob called for Kieran he didn't even bother. The moment he saw his son, he let go of Quillan to kneel down so that he could wrap Kieran up tightly in his arms.

"Hey," he whispered softly, his voice a little thick with emotion. His eyes had welled up with tears and he just kept a tight hold on Kieran, afraid he'd dissappear if he didn't. "I'm sorry, kiddo. I was hurt. But I'm gonna be fine now, I was so worried about you."

Jacob eyed the stranger and held Parker more closely to his body as if the man would somehow snatch him away. Quillan smelled wrong. "Who is this?" He didn't mean to interrupt the happy reunion, but that question needed answering.

Quillan looked back and forth between Jacob and Kellen, finding it difficult to even look at Kieran. "I'm--I'm one of the hunters who took Kellen and now I've brought him back."

Scoffing, Jacob stared for a moment. Was this guy serious? "You brought him back and you didn't expect to get ripped to shreds? Should we be grateful to you? You shouldn't have taken him in the first place!"

When Kieran heard that this man was the one that had taken his father he started to get all kids of worked up. He pulled free from Kellen's grasp and he marched over to Quillan and kicked him square in the shin. He folded his arms over his chest and glared up at the man as if he wasn't someone that could squash him like a bug.

"You are a bad man." He announced, his little voice full of anger. He kicked him again. "He's my dad, you can't just take him. You can't just take people."

"Jacob," Kellen said hastily as he shot the other wolf a look. "He risked a lot to get me here, and he's given up a lot of his beliefs. Cut him some slack," he added, and was about to say more when Kieran pulled away.

Kellen stood up, but before he could say anything Kieran had not kicked Quillan in the shin once, but twice. Kellen blinked and his mouth dropped open a little bit before he grabbed a hold of Kieran's hand to tug him back a little, and he scooped his son up to put him on his hip. He was exhausted, and it hurt a little to pick Kieran up, but he managed.

"Kieran," he said quietly. "That wasn't very nice. He helped get me here. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have been able to get away. He helped me. He took me, yes, but that was before he understood what I was. He didn't know, someone told him that we are very bad people. I showed him that wasn't true, and he helped get me here. Quillan made no move to stop the angry child, though he did flinch at the shin kicks. They were well placed and the kid was pretty strong. He felt that Kieran had every right to be upset and clearly Jacob did too, because he was practically cheering the kid on. "Wouldn't have had to risk a goddamn thing if he hadn't done it in the first place," Jacob frowned.

Shaking his head, Quillan held up his hands. "You don't have to make him apologize, Kellen. I'm the one who's sorry and it's my job to prove that to him."
