Corbin and Colby
The fights were getting unbearable. Paul was unbearable, but he was still at their house and Corbin had calmed down quite a bit since he'd attacked the poor kid. At the moment, Paul was asleep in the bedroom, on a makeshift bed on the floor. He was like a dog, Corbin liked to think. He wasn't going to let the mongrel into the bed. His mother was out of town with her boyfriend and after Paul had been so upset about getting hit, Corbin offered to let him stay. Stupid, but he thought maybe if Paul was still around, Colby would be less likely to take off with their father for just a little while longer.

He'd just come back from the occult shop about an hour ago. He had a book in his lap and he was sitting on the couch reading it intently. He didn't know where Colby was, but he could sense deep in his bones that his brother hadn't gone anywhere too far away. He dreaded the moment he felt so empty that it was clear Colby had left him for good. The book on his lap was about demons, summoning them and--most importantly--banishing them.

For a while Colby had laid in the bed, just watching Paul sleeping on the floor. He wasn't ever going to be able to make both of them happy at the same time, or to get away with not hurting one or both of them when he had to make a choice. And the choice was clear. It had been from the beginning. He would always and forever pick Corbin before he picked Paul or picked anyone else. When he heard Corbin come back he got up from the bed and came out to the sofa to sit beside him. He leaned over and laid his head on his shoulder, just getting comfortable because he planned on being there the whole time that Corbin was or the whole time his brother would let him.

"what are you reading?"

Seeing him come from that room hadn't done a lot for his mood, but he had been the one to invite the boy to stay. He chewed on the inside of his cheek as he sat there, turning page by page, skimming each word carefully to make sure he didn't miss a possibility.

"I'm reading a book to try and figure out how to send our fucking father back to wherever the hell he came from," he snapped. "There's a ritual in here that might work, but we'd have to kill our mother." And no matter what the woman had done to them, Corbin still missed her and wanted her attention. Granted, that was impossible now because they were still on the lam from the mental institution. Sometimes Corbin forgot that when he pretended that their lives were normal.

"That doesn't sound very nice." Colby said softly. He could tell that Corbin was still angry with him. It was coming off of the boy in waves. Slowly but surely it was making him withdrawl into himself and he was afraid of going back to the way he had been in the mental institution. Closing his eyes, he just pulled up and sat up straight so that he wasn't leaning on Corbin at all.

"Why do you want him to leave? That would be your chance to get rid of me. Isn't that what you want?"

As soon as his brother pulled away, Corbin sighed and set the book aside. "Stop that," he said firmly, though it wasn't a snap anymore. He reached out and took Colby's hand with both of his own. He pulled it into his lap and started to trace the lines of his palm.

He started murmuring to him one of the old nursery rhymes they used to share. "For want of a nail, the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse, the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a nail." When they were younger, repetition seemed to calm Colby down when he got very upset and Corbin would say those words over and over to him. "Just stop it, okay?"

Colby leaned back against him and put his chin on Corbin's shoulder so that he could try to calm down a little bit. He was having a hard time pulling himself back out of this funk and he was afraid he was just going to keep slipping all the way down until he was gone.

"I only ever did anything with him because you asked me to. I did it for you." He had just misunderstood what the end game was because he didn't think the same way that Corbin did. "I don't want to hurt anyone. I am so sad all the time." Around Corbin and around Paul. "I don't know what to do, Corbin."

When Colby appealed to his protective side, Corbin felt better about things. He knew it was his responsibility to take care of his brother and he'd been doing a piss poor job of it recently. This had been his fault and he knew it and now they were both so woven into the middle of it that there was no getting rid of Paul.

"I know," he said softly and kissed the top of Colby's head. "I know you did. I shouldn't have asked you just to be mean to him. I wanted to make him pay for having a crush on you." He felt guilty for it. Being so cruel made him a bad person; it made him like their father.

Colby pulled his knees up and wrapped his arms around them so that he could just sit comfortably against his brother.

"What are we supposed to do now?" With Paul, because they couldn't just dump him, they couldn't just shut him out, could they? "I don't want to hurt him, I already hurt him too much."

"He can stay, if he wants. I remember him saying at work that his mom wouldn't even notice if he was gone." Which Corbin found sad. Their mother had been overbearing, until they'd started messing up the image of her perfect life. Then she hadn't hesitated to send them away very quickly. "Do you want him around?" Corbin kind of thought of it like getting a puppy to share. Something to play with. Perhaps that was the wrong mentality to go into it with, but he couldn't help it. Paul was on such a different level than Colby was to him that he couldn't even look at him as human right now.

"I do want him around." And maybe that was Corbin's fault, because Colby hadn't ever wanted anyone around before now. But he liked Paul and he had gotten a little attached to Paul and he wasn't ready to let him go. "He hates me now, though. So he might not want to stay, he was just upset and lonely. He might not stick around once his mom gets back." and then Corbin would have what he wanted and Colby would at least not feel too badly about it.

"I wouldn't hate having him around. At least maybe you'd stay for him. And he was fun that one night." Deep down, Corbin knew his brother wouldn't ever choose Paul over him.

He sunk down farther on the couch, making it more so that he was lying on it rather than bothering to sit up and read. He forgot about the book for tonight. The large leatherbound tome sat on the floor and Corbin had no cause to worry about it. The witch at the store had said it was protected so a full demon couldn't touch it. He wanted it lying around where Ash could see it. Let him know that Corbin was ready to fight back. He was assured that that man couldn't do shit to them if they were smart about it and stuck together.

Colby sank down with him, laying beside him on the sofa so that he could just lean against Corbin. He wrapped his arm around his waist and laid his head to his shoulder. Closing his eyes, he tried to get comfortable and to forget about all of their troubles.

"When you get angry with me I think that you don't want me around." And he had been so angry with him lately.

"It doesn't mean I don't want you around. It just means that I'm angry. I get angry, people get angry." He smoothed his hand over Colby's hair, loving the feel of it. They fit together perfectly, in all things. The couch held them just right, and Corbin concentrated on how Colby's cheek seemed made to lie perfectly on his shoulder.

"Do you want him to sleep in the bed with us? I'm sure he'll want to stay. Who'd want to stay with their slutty old mom when they could stay with us? We're far more interesting than that bitch, I'm sure."

"I don't like it when you get angry." He knew that Corbin had a right to be sometimes but it scared him and just reminded him of times that were a lot harder and he didn't want to go back to that place. "Please don't be mad at me anymore." He tightened his arms around him, fingers curling into the back of his shirt. "Please Corbin, please, I want to stay here with you." He was breaking down and it was happening a lot faster than it usually did. The stress of Paul and their father and the realization that he had almost agreed to leave with him was just sending him at a fast spiral.

His chiding had been lost on Colby as it so often was, but that only made Corbin more fond of him.

"You are staying here with me. We're right here together." He wrapped his arms more tightly around Colby as if to physically remind him of that fact. "I'll try not to get mad at you again for awhile, okay? I promise." Promise that he would try. He prayed to whatever kind of deity would listen to someone like him that he would be able to succeed because he knew Colby couldn't handle much more.

Colby just went quiet then and he closed his eyes, relaxing into his brothers arms. For now he was going to be all right, but the stress of the situation with Paul and with their father's presence was quickly getting to the point where it was unbearable. He was hanging on by a very thin string and so long as Corbin was there he wouldn't break but when they fought it was the worst, it didn't take Colby much to think he was going to be left all alone.

"I'm sorry I hit him," Corbin said, just to try and solidify that feeling that they were okay now. "If he ever gets hurt again, I'll heal him and I'll try not to make it hurt like I did this time."

It felt good to be apologizing. Corbin didn't want to be a bad person. He didn't want to enjoy hurting people who he felt hurt him first. "And we'll get rid of Dad. We'll figure out a way. Do you trust me?"

"I trust you." He always did, even if Corbin broke his trust he could always win it back so easily. Colby squeezed his arms around Corbin a little tighter and then relaxed against him again. "Paul thinks that I am a horrible person, I don't know why he wants to stay here, but I want him to, at least until he doesn't want to anymore."

"Who knows what humans really think." After dealing with the issues with their father, Corbin was starting to look at himself less and less like a human. That did no good for his predilection to treat people poorly, since he felt like he was something more than they were. But he would try for Colby. "But I don't think he thinks you're a horrible person. He came after you. He thinks I'm horrible though. But we can change that."

"He came after me but he said awful things and I deserved them." Colby didn't have it in him to be malicious, not unless he was acting as Corbin's tool, like he had been in the Paul situation. If it hadn't been for Corbin's suggestions he would have never thought to kiss Paul, or even humor the idea of going on a date with him. But now they were hopelessly tangled up with him and Colby had no idea what to do. And he felt badly about it. "I don't want to go to work anymore. I don't want to know anyone else."

Corbin sighed and kissed his brother's head. "I can write you out of the schedule for a week or so, if you want. I think a vacation would do you good. Maybe I'll take some time off too." Because as much as he told himself he was okay with Paul living with them, he didn't relish the idea of Colby spending so much time with him all by themselves. Paul didn't have another job yet either.

He trailed his fingertips up and down Colby's spine, tugging the hem of his shirt up so that it could be skin to skin. "You like him. It's good that we found him then, right? If he makes you even a little bit happier sometimes."

Colby nodded a little bit. "Write me out of the schedule." He needed to just recover and being at work around other people wasn't really going to help, even if he was just a stocker. "I just want to sleep a lot." Though he never slept all that long even if he could sleep in, so being off of work wouldn't really change that.

"You're not g-going back to work?" Paul said from the bedroom doorway. He hadn't been standing there long, just long enough to hear Colby tell Corbin to write him out of the schedule. For finding out that, not only were the twins lover, but that at least Corbin had magical powers, Paul was taking it all pretty well. He hadn't run screaming yet, though he'd been kind of out of it after Corbin punched him out. He didn't go any closer to the two of them, frightened that he'd just start trouble between them again.

Corbin didn't move to look at the boy, but he also didn't stop touching Colby's back. His body didn't tense at all.

"Not yet." Colby figured he'd have to sometime. They couldn't really afford for him to just quit his job after all this time. They wouldn't be able to pay rent or get groceries. But he could take a week off and get paid for it if he used his vacation time. Tipping his head up slightly, he looked at Paul, not sure what he was going to do. "Are you going to stay here?"

He stared at the two of them, tangled up on the couch like that, and he thought of his pathetic little bed on the floor next to theirs. But then he thought about his own empty house, or worse, when his mother was home. Somehow it was even lonelier when she was there because she ignored him.

"Wh-what do you mean?" He didn't know exactly what Colby was offering, or asking. Or if he was even offering anything at all. "Are you g-guys going t-t-to have to k-k-" he paused and took a deep breath to get his stammering under control. "Kill me because I know C-c-corbin's secret? I don't r-really even know anything."

Corbin felt the smallest swell of sympathy for the boy. "Shut up, Paul. He's asking if you want to live with us. You should stay."

Colby sighed softly and he buried his face back against Corbin's shoulder for a moment before he looked over at Paul again. "Do you want to lay down with us?" Because right then he just wanted to be touching Corbin but he knew that Paul probably needed a little comfort too. "You can stay with us, you don't have to go home anymore if you don't want to. But you don't have to stay either, because I know you don't like me anymore."

Paul shook his head. "I like you." Because he couldn't stop liking Colby. Maybe if he could, this would all be a lot easier. "B-but I think maybe I'll j-just get something to eat and go back t-to my bed." He was obviously intruding.

"There's peanut butter in the cupboard," Corbin offered. "And some spaghettios."

Paul just nodded and disappeared around the corner to get to the small kitchen in their little house. He was very quiet in there as he made himself something to eat.

Colby just went back to being very quiet and he pressed his face back into Corbin's shoulder. He wasn't sure why but he felt like he was going to cry and he just wished that something would go right for them just once. He tried to listen to Paul make food, but he was being incredibly quiet.

Corbin could feel that shimmer of sadness rising off of Colby. "What's the matter?" he whispered as he pressed his own cheek to his brother's. "You can tell me why you're so sad." He thought maybe things were getting better, but he knew it would be a slow process.

"I don't know why I am sad." he just felt like he was and he wasn't sure what to do about it. "Don't you get sad sometimes?" He whispered back because he really didn't want Paul to hear him. Not right now, because he was pretty sure that Paul was the main reason why he was sad.

Quirking a brow at that answer, Corbin shook his head. "Not for a reason that I don't know," he said honestly. Though, perhaps he just wasn't as in tuned with the emotions that were sad. With Corbin they often went straight to pissed off.

"I used to be able to make you happy," he said with a little frown and gave Colby a squeeze. "But it's okay if you're sad, I guess. I just don't want to be the one making you sad. I've done what I can for now."

"I wish that things were like they were when we first came here." When they first started working at the grocery store and when they didn't know Paul and their father hadn't come around. He'd gotten completely out of the funk from the institution and he had gotten over the way he had felt about Corbin having friends at the school. Now it felt like all the good that was done was being undone and he wished he could stop it. "You do make me happy."

Even though Corbin wanted to finish his schooling, he had the feeling that he would drop it and run away with Colby again if he really thought it would make him better. They could spend their whole lives running from other people. "Do you want to move again? We can, if you think it'd be good." Though they'd talked about that before and it had never really clicked for either of them. Corbin liked Cold Water a lot. He felt like they fit there--at least as much as they'd fit anywhere.

Paul padded back through the living room with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a little paper plate. "Eat out here," Corbin called to him, thinking maybe that it was a good idea to force them all in the same room until it got somewhat comfortable again. Paul stopped and nodded a little bit, going to sit on the floor across from the couch so he could set the plate on the coffee table.

"No, I don't want to move again." Because he knew that it was selfish to want to and he knew that Corbin had a lot going on here. That he had built them a life and it wouldn't be fair to tear it down just because he was sad one day. "I'll be okay." When Corbin called to Paul and told him to eat out in the living room Colby didn't move, didn't bother turning over to look at him because when he had before it had only earned him Paul going into the kitchen alone. He was more comfortable with his face against Corbin's shoulder and his back to the living room.

As Paul ate in silence, Corbin just closed his eyes and relaxed for a few moments. The quiet was kind of nice.

When Paul was done, he didn't get up to leave, as if he was afraid of upsetting one of them. Corbin smirked at the fact that the guy was so obedient and for what? He couldn't quite figure him out. "Come here," he said finally, meaning that Paul should lie down with them. Maybe there was room for a third on the couch if they were all pressed together tightly.

There was a few moments of hesitation before he got up and shuffled toward them. He couldn't even begin to fathom how to go about crawling onto the couch with them. Corbin helped though, shifting Colby ever so slightly to make room and tugging Paul down on top of him. Now Corbin was on the bottom and he found that he didn't mind it. "There," he said with an exhale. "No one's going to kill you, Paul."

Colby was pretty much sandwiched between them and he kind of liked the comfort of having someone pressing against him from both sides. With a soft sigh he tightened his arms around Corbin and settled in between them. This was comfortable for him, and he hoped that it was for the two of them. "Maybe we should just get in bed for this instead." Because he had a feeling he was going to fall asleep and then they were all going to be stuck on the couch all night.

So much for keeping Paul on the floor in their room. But Corbin knew that wouldn't last very long and really, he didn't want it to. "All right," he said and squirmed so that he could get from underneath them.

Paul was going along with it, still tentative, but there was something about him that was eager as well. He slid from the pile and went to take his plate into the kitchen to throw it away. But he was back quickly and following them into the bedroom where Corbin was already taking off his shirt and pants so that he could be comfortable in his boxers. He hated sleeping in clothes.
