To Julian
Jason had been able to spend a little time with Jeremiah. He'd forced a shift in him and taken him outside. He'd even tried to show him a thing or two about hunting, but the puppy had taken no interest in it whatsoever. With Izzy's fox form back, he'd gone out with him too and Jason found himself just a touch jealous of how the two had bonded. But he'd felt a strong connection to the little one as well, one that he hadn't expected to feel.

He'd been introduced to Julian. Joshua had begrudgingly allowed it, though nothing much had transpired between them under Josh's watchful eye. But with Izzy still recovering from the attack, they were staying at Wolf Haven instead of the room they'd rented in Coldwater. Jason tried to keep to himself, but god if he could stand that tiny little room any longer. He was reading downstairs in one of the cozier study-like alcoves downstairs.

It was obvious to just about everyone at the haven that Julian was attached to Hunter and Wendell, especially Wendell. He stuck pretty close to his brothers, and the two men that he viewed as his parents. Jeremiah still called them by name, but Julian had easily slipped into calling Hunter Papa and Wendell Daddy. Usually he was with one of them, or one of his brothers, but today he'd been playing on his own in his bedroom. He had an odd mixture of toys. All of the toys were boy toys save for a few of the little ponies he'd begged Hunter for at the store, and Hunter had given in though he'd never admit it.

When he got hungry, he tucked a pony under his arm and headed downstairs to find Wendell. Instead, he found Jason. He peered around the corner at the man, still unsure of just who he was. Joshua hadn't said much, but Julian could tell that his big brother was apprehensive, so he was apprehensive about Jason as well.

There was nothing quite like the scent of ones one flesh and blood. It was so obvious to his nose, though he knew that it would take the little ones longer to figure it out than it had for Joshua. He was all right with the fact that they were keeping it from them for awhile.

But since he'd connected so well with Jeremiah as a wolf, he let his own power creep out toward Julian, trying to nudge along a shift so that he could attempt to connect with him on that level too. Little did he know that Julian was much different from Miah on that front and wouldn't be so easily pushed to shift.

There was something achingly familiar about Jason, but Julian couldn't quite put his finger on it, and the confusion only served to make the boy feel a little bit antsy and cranky. He clutched the white pony which had a bright red mane and tale, and hearts on the sides - Wendell, in the picture he'd colored a while back of the ponies - and furrowed his brow a bit when he felt the push of power from Jason.

Shifting in the house wasn't a good idea to Julie, mostly because all of the older wolves never did it. So why should he? He pushed the urge down as much as he could, but it was hard. He was stronger than most thought, though. It was confusing to where the urge was coming from, but after a moment he stepped out from behind the wall to look at Jason as he held onto the pony to his chest as if it was his protector.

"Are you doing that?" he asked, his tone more accusing than questioning. "I don't like it."

Jason took one look at that damn pony and wanted to chuck it out the window. Resisting the urge to push the power forward even harder, Jason pulled it back. "Why is it that you don't like it? You're supposed to find it exciting and fun." Alluring was the better word for it, Jason thought to himself.

He turned around in his chair, angling his body more toward the entryway where Julian was standing. He was a lovely boy, just like his mother had been a lovely little girl. Jason knew because he'd taken time to watch her grow up from afar--very afar.

"Well, you're not Papa for one and only he's allowed to do that," Julian said with certainty, though really he had no idea what he was actually talking about. "Plus I don't trust you, that's why."

Now that Julian had settled into a well rounded and caring environment, he was more talkative, and he spoke out more. Going through his shift early had pushed his more dominant nature forward, though it was nothing like Joshua's. But he wasn't so afraid to say things now, not as much as he had been, anyway.

"How come you're here?"

Jason laughed a little. At least the shimmer of dominance made up for that ridiculous pony with hearts on its butt. Closing his book so that he could give Julie his full attention, Jason leaned his elbow on the arm of the chair and he relaxed his chin into his hand. He didn't say anything about not being allowed to do something. He was smart enough to respect an alpha in his own territory, but he'd always push the limits. He knew Hunter probably wouldn't be too happy with it, so he let it slide, thinking an argument about rules with a child would lead to no good place.

"I'm here because there aren't a lot of my kind in Japan. And I got tired of being alone. Also, I heard about your story and I wanted to come and see for myself how you were doing."

Julian eyeballed the man warily. There was something so familiar about him that it was making Julian both curious, and nervous at the same time. He stayed put, though, making no move to get closer or step away from the man.

"Why would you care about how I'm doing?" Julie asked quietly. "You don't even know me."

He kept the pony clutched to his chest, wishing he'd brought the lightning bolt pony down as well. It was slowly dawning on Julie that Jason reminded him of his mother for some reason, and he took a step back suddenly.

It would be flat out difficult to deny his relation to the boys or their mother. There was a family resemblance, no doubt and even though he hadn't been around to raise his daughter, there were mannerisms that had shone through in their genetics.

"Not a lot of werewolf kids like you around," he said with a casual shrug. He had no problem lying to anyone. But he hadn't been the one to decide that the boys couldn't know they were related. If Julian figured it out for himself--well, Jason wasn't going to stop him. "You know that most kids your age can't shift. It's very special."

Julian was a very inquistive boy, always curious and asking a million questions, and he'd never really been afraid to talk to just about anyone if he was curious. But he found himself wishing that Joshua was there with him, or Wendell or Hunter. Jason made him feel insecure in a way that he hadn't felt in a long time and the little boy did not like it.

"Yes huh, there is werewolf kids, that's how there's big wolves one day," Julian said quietly. "I don't like shifting."

"Not kids who can turn into puppies. Most don't shift until they're at least fifteen," he corrected mildly. He didn't like the way the boy was pulling away from him in the least. Not that he was expecting any of them to run to him with open arms. He'd been somewhat hopeful, but practical.

"Shifting isn't always pleasant or convenient, but it's who you are. You'll learn to like it."

Julian set Jason with an intensely studying look. Jason didn't seem threatening. His tone didn't hold any sort of dismay, and he wasn't even getting up to come towards Julian so the little boy decided to have a seat on the floor. He set the pony in front of him, but kept his hand on it as he looked up and over at Jason.

"You like shifting? Do you fold your clothes before you shift?" he asked after a moment.

"I do like shifting. I've been doing it for a very long time, so I'm used to it. And no, I leave them in a pile. I just buy new ones if they get ruined." Jason didn't have to worry about money and he liked buying new things, so it hardly mattered to him if his clothing got ripped or dirty from the shift.

"Do you have other toys besides that pony?"

"I don't like to ruin my clothes. They're very nice, and I didn't use to have nice ones," Julian said as he trotted the pony a little bit, then pulled it back into his lap as if he was afraid Jason would take it away. "I have another pony. It has lightning bolts on it." Which had been why he'd wanted the two ponies, because they were like the ones he'd colored that were Hunter and Wen. "And cars. And dinosaurs, and legos, and army men and stuff."

Julian was more of a conversationalist than Jeremiah had been. He liked them both in their own way. "Lightening bolts! I'd like to see it." He tipped his head, hinting around for Julian to take him to his room. He wanted to engage the little boy, win at least some of his confidence.

"What kind of clothes did you used to have? Did your parents not buy you nice things before?" He'd sent money to Jessica every once in awhile, but he was positive that she'd used it for things for herself and her string of rotten boyfriends.

When Jason seemed interested in his toys, Julian relaxed a little bit more. He looked at the man curiously, still apprehensive, but not as much. He got to his feet and started for the stairs to lead the way.

"I dunno, they were small and dirty. And cold, they weren't very warm when it was icky out," Julian said as he tramped up the stairs. "I got a lot of Joshua's old clothes and Miah got my old clothes and Joshua barely had any clothes at all."

"He's strong because of it though. You and Jeremiah are too." Not that he'd ignored their plight for that reason. He just hadn't been in a place to be truly interested in rescue at the time.

Hiking up the stairs, he followed Julian to his room and looked around it. "It's nice," he commented honestly. But he knew he could give the boys far more.

"This is the best room ever," Julian said proudly. To him, it was far more than just nice. "Me and Miah had to share a little tiny bed, but we slept in Joshua's bed with him most nights because it was warmer that way."

The little boy went over to where is bed was and crawled up onto it to pick up the pony with the lightning bolts. He held it up to Jason because the man had wanted to see it.

"His name is Hunter, and this one's name is Wendell," he said as he held up the one with the hearts.

How very foolish for Jason to feel a spark of jealousy at that. He fully understood that he had not been a part of their lives, but he wanted a family now. Jason was used to getting whatever he wanted.

"I see," he said and nodded his approval. "Is there anything that you want that you don't have?"

Julian sat down on the bed and set the ponies down in front of him. Normally, before they'd found Joshua, he'd say Joshua. And when Jeremiah and Wendell had been missing, he'd say them. But he had everyone he loved, who loved him, and a nice home. Food in his belly. He was pretty happy, so he shook his head a little.

"No," he answered. "If I did, I could just ask Papa and Daddy, though. And Joshua."

"They get you everything you want?" he said as he leaned against the door frame. Clearly, little Julian didn't have the kind of materialistic hunger that a boy of his age should. Though he supposed he had to respect that a little. "Do Hunter and Wendell have lots of time to give you attention? They seem like busy men."

"No, not everything," Julian said as he settled the ponies onto his lap. "But that doesn't mean I can't ask," he added matter of factly. "And they spend lots of time with me. I love them very much and they love me. They read to me and play with me, and go running with me."

"Lots of time," he nodded and repeated the little boy's words. Perhaps it was cruel of him to even suggest this, but putting a little bit of worry in Julian and his brother was a strategic move on his part. Even with children, Jason was all about strategy.

He pretended to think about his next words, even though he'd already been considering them. While he didn't know that Hunter and Wendell were thinking about having more children, he could certainly guess that at least Wendell would be interested in a larger family. "Do you suppose they'll have enough time for you if they ever decide to have a baby of their own?"

Julian hadn't ever considered that he really wasn't Hunter and Wen's. He felt like he was his, they were just so welcoming and safe. They protected him and Jeremiah, and Joshua, too. At Jason's words, the little boy's brow furrowed up and he frowned a little.

"I dunno," he said quietly.

"I'm sure they'll make time for you, Julian." His voice was kind, rich with compassion as if it wasn't his intent to cause unrest in the child. But the seed was planted now and he smiled inwardly at what havoc this might cause. Enough to make his own offer seem like a good option? He hoped so. After all, there would never be more children in his future. It would all be about Julian, Jeremiah, and Joshua.

Julian wasn't sure what to think. Why would Hunter and Wendell want other kids? Wasn't he and Miah enough? He blinked a few times and tipped his head down to stare at his ponies as he went quiet. He didn't know what to say, for the first time in a long time.
