bernie, shiloh, lewis, morris
Continued from here.

Shiloh knew Morris had been working that night, they'd been texting on and off during the entire evening. Still, it hadn't even occurred to him that Morris would be the one to see him like this whle Bernie drove he and Lewis to the hospital. His eyes had drifted closed along the right, and pain his ribs were causing him made breathing a chore. Every small fraction of an inch burned, and he tried to adjust the way he was sitting, hoping that would help, but all it did was make things worse and he started coughing up a little bit of blood.

When he realized the car had stopped, and someone was talking to him, he opened his eyes and was surprised to see Morris' face. He blinked a few times, obviously a little bit confused, but it didn't take much for his brain to make sense of the situation.

"Morris," he said softly, "Where's Lewis? Is he okay?" he asked, his voice strained.

Seeing Shiloh with Morris made something stab at Bernie's heart. If Shiloh wasn't her favorite then Loki wouldn't have done anything against him and he and Morris could live happily ever after without worry of psycho vampires with kicks for revenge.

Morris smoothed his hand over Shiloh's hair, unable to prevent himself from indulging in that little bit of familiarity. His stomach was twisting. From a cursory glance over his body, he couldn't tell how serious this was, but when he started coughing blood, he knew it could be really bad. "They took him in ahead of you. They're going to try to bring him around and give him brain scan to make sure everything is okay. Don't try to move."

Bernie was busy explaining what had happened, lying about the circumstances, of course, but offering the correct physiological facts.

Shiloh blinked, his eyes heavy, and they looked past Morris to find Bernie. He just wanted to make sure that she was still there, still close. And of course she was. When his eyes settled on her, he felt relieved, but coughed some more and closed his eyes again. Soon someone was along to help Morris get him out of the car on the carrying board.

"It's getting hard to breathe," he managed to get out, and he was starting to panic. The feeling of not being able to breathe, he'd never felt anything like it, and he didn't know what to do.

Morris hated not being able to go back with him. He would only be in the way. "He's a friend," he said with concern as they wheeled him back to the trauma room. Fortunately, his coworkers agreed to pick up the slack on his shift until a replacement could come in and he sat in the waiting room with Bernadette until the two of them were stabilized and doing better. It was awkward to say the least. At least Bernie was forthcoming with information when he asked what had really happened.

It was a few hours before someone came out and told them that both boys were stable. The hospital was small, since the town was small, and so they'd put both boys in the same room to share.

Shiloh was still a little out of it, thanks to the pain medication, but they'd gotten the internal bleeding to stop. They'd had to a Bronchioscopy to clear his lungs, and now he seemed to be doing a lot better. His ribs were taped up, and his wrists were bandaged as well. When Bernie and Morris came to the room, he opened his eyes a little to look over at them.

"Is Lewis okay?" he slurred, the pain medication definitely effecting him. He didn't even notice Lewis was in the same room. "They gave me morphine."

Bernadette had gone back and forth between giving Shiloh some of her blood to heal him faster and letting him heal on his own. Morris had been adamant about her not doing such a thing. Neither one of them really knew if their desires were selfish or not. In the end, Bernie decided to hold off since they were in the hospital and a rapid recovery would draw attention.

"I'm okay," Lewis said from his bed. He'd come around awhile ago and had no ill effects except a bruise or two. He could still vividly hear the sound of Shiloh's ribs popping and he was glad the boy had morphine. "Morris went and got coffee. I'm sure he's going to be furious he missed you waking up. He's been hovering over your bed."

Shiloh blinked slowly and let his head lull slowly in the direction of Lewis' voice. He stared for a moment, his eyes trying to focus and once they had he blinked again.

"You met Morris?" he asked softly, "Morris is here?" he added, his attention shifting back to Bernie.

He'd have more questions than that later. Like who Loki was, and why he'd hurt him so badly. But for now, he was too out of it, and he was more than content to just be taken care of. As long as Lewis was all right, and he had Bernie and Morris there he'd be all right. It'd be daylight very soon, and he didn't realize Bernie would have to go.

Lewis was relieved to see Shiloh at least a little coherent. "He's really hot--in a dirty scruffy kind of way." Not even a little bout with unconsciousness and danger could waver Lewis' sense of fun and teasing. He had a cup of jello that he was working on and he pointed his spoon at Shiloh. "He hasn't left your side until just now. You'd better pretend to be asleep when he comes back and wake up while he's here."

"Don't be ridiculous, Lewis," Bernie snipped. It was far from her cruelest voice, but it was firm. She didn't feel like fun and games right now and it was easy to tell that she was still shaken from this experience. As a vampire, it was difficult for her to look tired if she'd just fed, but despite the fact that she'd fed earlier that night before all of this madness, her face looked drawn and exhausted from concern.

Shiloh was glad that Lewis seemed to approve of Morris. Shiloh hadn't a clue as to why he felt so drawn to the necromancer, but he was. Turning his attention to Bernie, he reached out to grab her hand but frowned once he realized his wrists were all bandaged up.

"I won't be able to paint," he said sadly, and he resisted the urge to cry because he figured crying would do him no good. Normally he'd ask how long it would take him to heal, but he couldn't think too clearly just yet.

It broke Bernie's heart to hear the waver in Shiloh's voice when he realized his painting would be hindered. "They say the breaks were almost surgical. It's a Colles fracture and doesn't need surgery. They'll heal cleanly. Loki is very good at causing just the right amount of pain and destruction." The man metered it out with such skill that she was sure her debt would never be paid back.

She stepped closer to the boy and touched his cheek with her blood-warmed fingertips. "Shiloh, I'm sorry. This is my fault."

Shiloh's gaze flickered back to Bernie and he didn't quite understand why she'd say such a thing. He'd gathered the man that hurt him had done it as revenge. He knew the man was angry at Bernie over something, but to Shiloh that didn't make it her fault.

"No it's not," he said softly, "It's not your fault I love you. Or that you care about me. You didn't make him do anything. Everyone's choices are their own."

Bernie shook her head and looked away from Shiloh. She could hardly stand to look at him when he was like this. "It'll be six months before your heal completely. But if you want, I can make it so it goes faster."

At that point, Morris walked in and he frowned. "Messing with the human healing process is never a good idea. It just isn't." He didn't like the idea of Shiloh drinking vampire blood.

Shiloh had managed to sit up against the pillows a little bit, and he was just trying to piece together exactly what had happened, but when Bernie said six months it as obvious that he was upset.

"I can't wait six months," he said softly, "I can't not paint or draw or - I can't do that for six months, I can't."

"Or longer," Bernadette pointed out because that was a possibility too. She leveled her gaze against Morris, not liking his implications. She knew that it wasn't the idea of messing with human healing; it was that he didn't want vampire blood in his innocent little human.

"Six months isn't so long," Morris said. "And you'll be able to make art before that. It'll probably be part of the physical therapy. Shiloh, I don't think you realize what you'd be giving up for a drink."

Shiloh was starting to look painfully panicked, and his face twisted up a little as his head tipped back. He was crying despite the fact that he'd been trying not to, and his legs were moving restlessly. The crying wasn't helping ease the pain in his ribs, and the way he was breathing was making it difficult for the morphine to keep doing it's job. He made a quiet noise as he lifte his arm up to hide his face with the crook of his elbow but that only lasted for a minute before he started to try and get up.

"I wanna go home, take me home Bernie," he said in between painful sniffles as he started to sort of fall out of the bed while he tried to get his IV out.

Morris was horrified that his words had caused this kind of reaction in Shiloh and it twisted his stomach that the boy was reaching out for Bernadette. He was going to have to get over his prejudice and he didn't like that idea at all. She was the reason that Shiloh was hurt and he was asking her to take him home?

"Darling, no, you need to stay here for a day. They need to keep an eye on you. I'm sure I can get them to release you tomorrow evening. Don't worry." She smoothed her hand over his hair and leaned down to press her mouth against Shiloh's forehead, gently pushing him back down onto the bed. Her hands gathered his so that he couldn't get the IV out any further and Morris started working to settle it back in place. "Morris will look after you, won't he?" She asked as she looked up at him.

Morris nodded. "Of course I will. If he wants me to."

Shiloh could barely move his fingers as Bernadette held onto them, and that caused him to frown, but he was calming down. He sniffled quietly and swallowed hard, allowing Morris to fix the IV in his arm. He turned his attention to Morris and looked at the man sadly.

"I want you to stay," he said softly before he closed his eyes.

Shiloh was a sensitive person, he always had been, and at the moment he was feeling very clingy. He didn't like that Bernie had to leave for the entire day, but he knew there wasn't much he could do about it. At least Morris and Lewis would be there with him, though.

Morris very much wanted to speak with Marin to see if maybe she had any healing spells for the boy. He would be far more comfortable with magic rather than vampire blood. He was sure that it would bind Shiloh to Bernadette in such a way that was irreversible. Or maybe that was only if he continued to drink from her. He didn't know the mechanics of it and that annoyed him. He needed to ask Marin about it--he could trust her answers.

He nodded. "Okay, I'll stay." He was sure that he could take vacation time, especially when it was so obvious that he wasn't playing hooky from work for fun's sake.

As the sun started to itch at Bernadette's skin, she stayed as long as she could. But eventually, the need for darkness drove her out of the hospital and back to her car with promises that she would return as soon as night fell.

Shiloh had dozed off, and hadn't been awake to say goodbye to Bernie. When he finally came around again, it was nearing noon, and he was hungry. He turned his head and let out a quiet little whimper as he tried to sit up, but in the end he just stayed where he was. He opened his eyes to look over at Morris, who was sitting in a chair beside his bed.

"What time is it?" he asked softly, his brow furrowing up. "I'm starving."

Lewis was flipping through TV channels, though he had the sound on mute so as not to bother Shiloh.

Morris had been watching the barrage of visual input from the TV, wondering how Lewis kept up with how fast he was changing the channels. When he'd gotten tired of it, he shut his eyes or turned them to Shiloh to just watch him sleep. "It's lunch time," he said quickly when Shiloh spoke. "I'll call down for a tray."

Piping up from his side, Lewis reached out to hand Morris his cup of pudding. "He can have this while he waits." He'd been keeping the nurses busy with all of his food requests. They were close to cutting him off from all the freeze pops he kept ordering.

When Morris handed him the pudding, Shiloh took it and settled against the pillows. He was hungry for something more, but this would definitely help tide him over. It was awkward for him to grip the spoon, though, and it made his wrists ache. He made a face and sort of gave up to let his head drop back against the pillows.

"I hate this," he said softly.

Lewis felt bad for Shiloh, unable to imagine what life would be like without the use of his hands for so long. But he was certain that Bernie's blood could help heal him. Elgyn had been tossing around the idea of binding Lewis to him. It meant life and youth for as long as the vampire was alive--or at least that's how Lewis understood it. But it was a process. Complicated. He didn't think just one drink could hurt anything, but Lewis was under the impression that Morris knew more than he did.

After he'd called for a lunch tray for Shiloh, Morris came back and noticed that the boy wasn't eating. "Here, I can help." He was sure that every movement was agony. Getting the cup of pudding, he scooped some up on a spoon and held it near Shiloh's mouth so he could have a bite.

Shiloh opened his eyes when Morris came back, and though he didn't like the idea of having to be fed like a baby, he allowed it. He didn't have the heart to snap at Morris for just trying to help, so he took the offered bites. He looked pitiful, though, absolutely depressed and the longer this sort of thing went on the worse it would probably get.

Morris heaved a sigh. "Can you at least wait until I talk to Marin? Maybe she can help speed up the healing somehow--you know--without having to drink blood."

He knew that it was going to end up being like that and he'd just have to deal with it. They'd only just met and Morris was thinking about the future. But maybe he didn't have a future with Shiloh. It was a sad thought to be sure.

Shiloh nodded. Sure, he'd wait. But he wasn't sure what Marin could do, or who she even really was. All he knew was that she was a witch that'd been helping Morris gain control over his abilities.

"Mikhal knows a sorcerer," he added quietly, "Maybe he could help, too. I don't know..." he frowned as he closed his eyes again and sighed.

"Well, do you want it to be Bernie?" he asked, suddenly realizing that maybe Shiloh would be happy to have a little bit of the vampire woman in him. He said it without jealousy, just mild curiosity in his voice. He and Bernadette were close, maybe it was something that Shiloh wanted to make their bond even stronger.

Shiloh opened his eyes and turned his head to look over at Morris. He was afraid Morris would judge him, or not want to be with him if he said yes, but he couldn't lie so he nodded his head.

"I trust Bernie," he said softly. "I know you don't, but I do. She's always been good to me."

"Me too. She's always been kind to me," Lewis interjected, disliking the way Morris was talking about Bernadette like some creature not meant to be trusted. He wanted to defend her like Shiloh was defending her.

"I'm not saying she's going to double cross you. I'm saying that you need to know all the side effects--" he sighed. "Nevermind. It's your decision." He couldn't meddle. After all, how well did he even know Shiloh? He couldn't be dictating his life.

When the tray arrived, he stood close to Shiloh, making sure he would be there to help him if he needed it.

Shiloh was quiet, not really understanding what Morris meant. He had no idea about human servants, or how the process worked. He just wanted to be better again.

When the food tray was brought in, he sat up some, grimacing in pain. It was grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup, and broccoli on the side. He started to eat, slowly, but it was awkward. The sandwich was easiest so he started with that. It didn't take long for the discomfort to settle in and he laid his head back as his eyes slipped closed.

"He broke my wrists on purpose, he asked me what I liked to do and when I answered he just snapped them," he mumbled quietly.

The revelation brought a shiver to Lewis' back. Had he been awake for that? The knock to his head had muddled his internal timeline. No, he remembered it because he remembered the sound of Shiloh's wrists snapping; it turned his stomach. "Bernadette knew his name. She acted like she wasn't surprised." That was bothersome.

Morris cringed at the idea that the attacker had done something so specific to hurt Shiloh mentally and emotionally. "This kind of thing probably happens to her all the time--or rather, to the people who are close to her. It makes sense, doesn't it? If you can't hurt her, how could someone get to her?" Hurt the people she loves. It seemed perfectly logical to him, which was one more argument in favor of Shiloh not being close to her.

Shiloh had only eaten half of his sandwich and a few pieces of broccoli. Now he was sipping at his juice, but soon enough he settled back again and closed his eyes. He never really ate much. Bernie told him he was like a bird.

"I hope he leaves, I hope he's done now and he just goes away," he mumbled.

"You don't want to even get him back for what he's done? Bernadette should take care of him. He's a menace, clearly." Morris wished there was something he could do. Maybe if he was a powerful necromancer, he could seek out the vampire and do away with him. As it was, he could hardly control himself when he kissed Shiloh.

Morris picked up the leftover half of Shiloh's sandwich and tried to urge him to take a few more bites. He would need his strength to recover. Then again, maybe he'd just need Bernie's strength to recover.

Shiloh shook his head at the food once he opened his eyes again, and he stared over at Morris with a little frown on his lips. He wasn't sure why Bernie hadn't... taken care of Loki. There had to be a reason.

"You look cranky," he told Morris softly. "Did you sleep at all?" He didn't want to talk about Bernie or Loki anymore.

Shiloh's description of Morris as looking 'cranky' made Morris soften a little. "I had coffee, that's like sleeping." Clearly it wasn't anything like sleeping because Morris had dark circles under his eyes. He didn't even look this tired after a long shift. All he'd been doing since Shiloh had been hurt was sit upright and stare at him and it was the most exhausting thing he'd ever done.

He set the sandwich back down on the tray and felt even more tired now that Shiloh had pointed it out.

"I don't think I'd hear the end of it if the guys saw me crawling into bed with you in the hospital." He laughed a little. None of them were homophobic or anything, it would be more the sappy romantic side they'd be making fun of. "Besides, I have to protect you, just in case." Not that a vampire could get to them during the day, thank god.

He did lean his head down so that his forehead was resting against Shiloh's thigh. It would be so nice to sleep for just a tiny bit. Thanks to his job, Morris could sleep just about anywhere and in any position.
