Cinna Thompson had almost single handedly pulled the prom together. The ballroom was decorated with festoons of floating flowers. Stars hung from the ceiling, each set to sparkle as if they were properly in the sky. The outskirts of the room were set with small round tables that could accommodate one or two couples. A table of refreshments was guarded at all times by Seamus Morgendorfer and a rotating cast of other faculty who volunteered to chaperon for the evening.
A glittery ballot box stood next to the entrance where students were set to write down their chosen prom king and queen and drop their tickets into the box. Students began to stream in after dinner to quiet music playing over the speakers. The band, a local group called Vampira was scheduled to begin playing around 7:30.
Needless to say it was going to be an excellent evening.

"Here," he handed over the few daisies he had picked on the way over. "I even brought you some flowers."
She accepted the flowers with a shy smile. She never expected Leland would do something so sweet. She accio'd a water bottle and widened the mouth with a quick spell to make an instant vase. "Thank you. They're lovely."
"Nice work," he complimented on her magic. "Oh, it was nothing," he said pulling the brim of his hat a little lower, a goofy smile in place on his lips.
Then she proceeded to push him out the door, close it behind him and dash to her closet. Within minutes she found an appropriate dress paired it with a belt, choker, and a little sparkly bag she never had an occasion to wear.
She opened the door and gestured grandly. "How did we do?"
He was impressed with how quickly she had gotten dressed and even more impressed when she opened the door. He had never seen her all dressed up.
"And you say you just had this old thing laying around? Damn," he said smiling warmly. "You look beautiful," he complimented her, meaning it and offered her his arm.
"My aunt had to mail me clothes," he admitted with a grin.
She laughed at that. "You don't own anything formal?" Half her wardrobe was semi-professional dress clothes. She couldn't imagine not having something to toss together for a special occasion.
"I never had a use before I came here. Formal dress was a completely foreign concept to me," he grinned. "My closet is full of t-shirts and gym shorts," he said rubbing the top of his head with his free hand.
Turning into the prom he held the door open for his date. "Interested in getting some pictures?" he asked seeing the photographers. That was another thing his aunt would just about die over.
She posed with Leland, picking the most simple picture as her favorite. Leland had a wonderful smile, she thought, and simple was always best.
"Sound's like the band is starting soon," she commented. They were warming up their instruments a bit before they started to play and the kids who were mingling around the doors were starting to move further into the ballroom.
He picked a few pictures, some of them the same as Veronica, some of them different. He would send the nicer ones home to his aunt.
"I hope they're good," he grinned. "Last time they hired a real shi... terrible band," he really was working on cleaning up his mouth in front of certain crowds. "Want to mingle a bit before we hit the dance floor?" he asked.
"Absolutely," she agreed, though she didn't know who they'd talk to since she didn't think Steven would come tonight and he probably wouldn't approve of Leland anyway. She didn't see Manney yet and Cinna was almost definitely running around the prom like a chicken with her head cut off. "Do you see anyone you want to chat with first?"
