I might be too young to understand this but I don't think people would want to be alone and not mean it is a normal thing. He could have been unhappy for a really long time and it just got worse and worse and worse and now he no longer is able to feel happiness or maybe he doesn't even feel pain. I'm just throwing suggestions out. Let me know if I am completely off base.
