It was sort of ridiculous that she wasn’t talking to him, but if he was being completely fair it was ridiculous what they were fighting over in the first place. Really, he should’ve known better than to actually listen to his mother for once, and consequently freak out when she went on about him and Alice being married and having children. Children. Diapers. Ugh. It was wrong to hold Alice accountable for the thought when they were just dating. Well, they were dating, before Frank had to go and make a fool of himself in a splendid manner and then not talk to Alice all summer long.

So here he was, tapping his fingers against the table and trying to look past Pettigrew’s oddly shaped head without gaining much attention from anyone, anyone except her. “Psst! Alice!” He leaned forward so he was able to see her clearly; she was sitting a few seats away from him. Frank looked around to make sure that Slughorn was no where in sight before trying again, “Oi! Alice!” He gave another Gryffindor a rude face as they tried to pacify them. She wasn’t talking to him in between classes, during classes, in the commons or anywhere else that he could think of.

Surely she had to talk to him sometime? And really, being with her was all Frank knew. It wasn’t as though he just wanted someone to be with, that thought was absurd, he wanted to be with her. He missed just talking to her and hell, even snogging her, and it’d been a bloody long time since they’d talked, let alone were dating. He narrowed his eyebrows and sat back down as he began to search through his book bag for a piece of parchment. He could have any girl, really. Really really really. In fact he’d heard that that 6th year, Robbards, had an insufferable crush on him. And he couldn’t blame the poor soul, of course. He’d just let her down gently once he and Alice were back together, because, they had to get back together.

Frank shook his head and stuck his tongue out as he wrote a small note on the parchment before crumpling it up and leaned forward again, aiming to throw it at Alice. She’d notice him. She had to notice him. Oh Merlin, what if she never spoke to him again? He waited a few seconds and then lifted his arm, only to feel someone’s hand clasp around his wrist. Frank let out a groan as the classmates that were sitting around his snickered. Looking up, he unscrunched his face only to see Slughorn of all people holding his wrist. He let go of the wad of parchment and Slughorn quickly caught it and gave Frank a warning look before shaking his head and opening it.

Fuck. If there was anything in the world that Frank wanted, it was for him to stop reading Alice’s note and for the love of Merlin not read it out in front of everyone. Slughorn shook his head and opened his mouth as though to chide Frank, but Frank interrupted him quickly by waving his hand and looking solemn. “Sir, I am incredibly sorry for my misbehavior, it’s very unsuiting and I do hope you can forgive me.” More snickering. Frank nodded over at Alice and gave Slughorn a pleading look, before the professor walked away with a small smirk on his face as well as the parchment in his hands.

Frank let out a small sigh and a triumphant smile as he turned around and tried to catch Alice’s eye, undeterred, “Alice!”

Even to this day, Alice had no idea why all of a sudden, her relationship with Frank had ended. She had wasted half of her summer wracking her brain for a plausible explanation, while the other half was spent coming up with gruesome ways of revenge against him... okay, that's actually a total lie. Despite trying her hardest not to let the sudden break-up bother her in the slightest, it was impossible not to feel sadness over her first and only relationship coming to an end so abruptly. Alice wasn't afraid to admit that some time during the year the two of them had been dating, she had fallen in love with Frank and his crazy ways. It was impossible not to, when the big idiot was so endearing. But he had really hurt her this time, and there was no way in hell she would let him off the hook so easily. If he really was as sorry as he claimed to be, he would have to work very hard to win her back.

Alice rolled her eyes to herself the first time Frank whispered her name, bending her head forward a few inches to hide her face away from him, and focusing her whole attention on the piece of parchment in front of her. Bring it to a boil, stir in the salamander scales and wait four minutes before adding the beetle eyes. Keep it on a high flame until damn it, would he just stop! Alice cursed under her breath as she read over her ruined Potion's homework, looking up to glare at Frank for a brief second before looking away again, her long hair brushed over shoulder to conceal her face further. She didn't feel too bad about having to re-write the inch and half she'd already done of her homework because, if truth be told, the whole thing was a complete, disorganised mess. She had lost her track of thought the moment he had first whispered her name.

The hour was almost over and Alice weighed on the idea of restarting her homework then or waiting until she got to the common room. The latter wouldn't give her an excuse to keep herself busy and ignore Frank, so she settled for the former, rummaging through her bag for a fresh piece of parchment and a new bottle of ink. She paused mid-search when the farthest side of the table to her right erupted into chuckles, and she didn't even have to look up to know it was Frank's doing. She looked up, anyway, curiosity for what Frank was doing now getting the best of her, and she saw the whole exchange between him and Professor Slughorn. His words made her smile, as though they were proving her point, earlier - even when he was being a silly idiot about to get in trouble, he managed to make her smile. A shake of her head and Alice let out a long sigh. Maybe she was the idiot.

She tried to focus on her homework, tuning out the whispers and the laughs of everyone around her, and it worked for all of three seconds, until Marlene elbowed her on the ribs and motioned towards Frank with a flick of her head. Alice groaned rather loudly, staring pointedly at her friend and shaking her head again. "Would you please tell Frank that interrupting me while I'm doing homework and getting in trouble isn't exactly working in his favour?" She spoke clearly and loud enough for her voice to carry over to Frank's side and hoped that the false warning would make him stop. At least for the time being.
