Radley leaving always let Thoreau feeling conflicted. On the one hand, he missed him like crazy. On the other, there was this knot of worry and tension he carried around in his stomach whenever Radley was around that disappeared when he went. Worry that Radley would find out Thoreau really wasn't as honest about how he behaved as he pretended to be, and that he was kind of a mess who definitely did drugs harder than pot, and that, yeah, he kind of got around and the stupid twink Radley had met in the club hadn't been lying. Thoreau wasn't the greatest at keeping his mess to himself, but he thought he did a pretty good job with Radley. It helped that he lived in Surrey.

Rooney, on the other hand, knew everything. Thoreau walked into Rooney's room after seeing Radley and Laney off at the train station and dropped onto his huge bed next to him. "Gone," he said. "Why am I so stupid, Roo?"
