Backstory: When Rictor and Shatterstar left X-force, they went back to Mexico to deal with Julio's gun-running relatives. They've been trying to alleviate the countries slide into greater and greater criminal activity ever since. Julio's sister Ramon had an unplanned pregnancy from a fly-by-night boyfriend, and Julio and Star stepped in to help support things and serve as primary male role models.
Esteban grew up surrounded by cousins who needed more help than he did; he could get by. But he /did/ need to learn all he could from his uncles about the family business of taking down the other family business.
He got a little annoyed when things got really bad and the family decided to send him off to Xavier's.
