Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Draco had made it through the first day in this brand new world without much trouble, other than his best friends both thinking he was crazy and finding out that his father was a lot... He looked much happier. And he'd kept his hair shorter. Draco didn't know if it was his father not dying that had made the difference or what, but he seemed... good. Draco supposed he had to like that.

At least today he'd actually showered and taken the time to put himself together properly before leaving the dorm. He walked into the common room and stopped to wait for Pansy and Merlin to find him. Merlin. Getting to know someone he was supposed to have known since birth all over again was going to be a little weird, but he could handle it. Probably. Today couldn't be any weirder than the day before.

Merlin had just finished getting ready and found it a bit odd that Draco wasn't still asleep in the dorms. He made his way down to the common room and found Draco there, sitting beside him.

"You're up early." Merlin smiled at Draco and reached over to take his hand into his own. They were good friends like that. "Do you want to go to breakfast?"

"Had trouble sleeping, for some reason," Draco said, looking up at Merlin and doing his best not to feel nervous. This was nothing and he wasn't going to overthink the hand holding until Merlin leaned in to kiss him or something. Draco knew he was gay. He was just used to everyone else not knowing.

"Should we wait for Pansy?" he asked, glancing towards the girl's dorms. "Or do you think she's already in the Great Hall?"

Merlin grumbled at that. Everything was always about Pansy. He shrugged and let go of Draco's hand, letting out a soft sigh, even if he was doing his best to hide his feelings.

"I don't know." Merlin told him and then glanced at him. "I suppose you could go ask someone."

This was going to be like trying to balance two Pansys, wasn't it? Draco had made everything else in his life easier except this. He just wanted to have simple friends who did what they were told and one Pansy to push him around. Was that too much to ask for?

"Come on," he said, getting to his feet. "We'll head down to breakfast now. I could use something to help me wake up anyway."

Merlin watched Draco stand up. He still felt a bit put out about the Pansy thing, but Draco was still his best mate. His only mate, if he was being honest. He stood as well and let out a soft sigh.

"You should have slept a bit." Merlin told him with a shrug. "When did you stop crawling into bed with me when you couldn't sleep?"

Draco was about to say that he thought, at sixteen, that they were probably too old for that, but who knew what he and Merlin had done before he'd come back. "I slept off and on. It wasn't that bad. I just woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep."

He looked at Merlin for a moment, then reached out and looped their hands together. There. Now he'd stop being fussy. "How do you feel about our homework for class today?" One of their classes had to involve homework, right?

Merlin thought about their homework for a moment and frowned. "Well. The essay for potions isn't due until tomorrow, right? Hopefully I didn't mix up the days or my father will murder me."

"Good morning." Blaise approached the two of them and looked them over carefully. "The two of you going to breakfast together?"

[info]lordlyheir

Draco was pretty sure the murder thing was hyperbole, but who knew with the Dark Lord? He glanced at Blaise, relaxing a little when he saw a familiar face. And then letting go of Merlin's hand because it was weird for two sixteen-year-old boys to hold hands if they weren't together.

"Yes," he said. "You coming? I need coffee. I slept horribly last night. Is the essay for potions due tomorrow?"

Blaise arched a brow at Draco and nodded. "Yes. It's due tomorrow." He told him. He and Draco didn't really talk much, even though they made an effort to. He shrugged. "Suppose I could have a cup of coffee as well."

Merlin frowned at that. "I thought we were going to breakfast, Draco."

"We are," Draco said, glancing at Merlin. "Breakfast is where coffee is found. We're going. Don't worry." He touched Merlin's arm again and then began to walk, trusting that the other boy would follow.

He was curious about where everyone he was friends with in the old world had ended up. He looked Blaise over. "You look different," he said. "Just a little."

Blaise didn't understand what Draco meant, but he followed him and Merlin towards breakfast anyway. He looked the other boy over carefully and shrugged. "What do you mean, I look different?" He asked.

Merlin shook his head. "Draco's been weird since he got sick yesterday morning."

Draco glanced at Merlin and then shrugged. "That's pretty accurate," he agreed. "It's nothing, Merlin. I talked to your father for an hour and he didn't think it was anything to worry about. You shouldn't either."

He looked at Blaise again. "Maybe you don't look any different. I've just been having brief memory lapses. You'll have to forgive me if I forget anything."

"No. I don't think I look any different." Blaise glanced down at his uniform and shrugged. He looked the same as he always did. He wasn't sure what Draco saw that was different about him.

Merlin rolled his eyes. He didn't like that Draco was looking at Blaise like that. He wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "Coffee?"

Was Merlin jealous? Draco glanced at the other boy when he wrapped an arm around him, feeling slightly amused. It was sort of like having two Pansys. "Yes, coffee," he agreed.

He looked at Blaise. "Are you coming?" he asked.

Blaise glanced at Merlin. The look in his eye told Blaise that he really didn't want to go with them. He chewed at his bottom lip for a moment and then shook his head. "I'll catch up with you later, Draco." He turned and walked off.

Feeling smug, Merlin smiled at Draco. "Looks like it's just us, then. Since when do you even talk to Blaise? He's a half-blood."

Draco shrugged, glancing at Merlin again as they walked towards the Great Hall. "He's not a Mudblood," he said. "Things could be worse." Did someone actually know who Blaise's father was here? Maybe that's what was different about him.

"And he's a Slytherin," Draco added. "Things could be a lot worse. It's not like he's a Hufflepuff."

Merlin stared at his friend for a moment and then frowned. "Worse? Are you serious?" He asked and then shook his head. "He's lucky to even be in this school. He had to show his magical skills before he could even be accepted. And I think that if his father hadn't spent so much money for the ministry, he would have had a more difficult time."

Draco opened his mouth to protest what Merlin was staying, then stopped. That did sound like something the Dark Lord would instigate at Hogwarts. Keep the Mudbloods out and save the school for pure-bloods. Which Draco, of course, approved of completely. But Half-bloods... If they didn't have half-bloods, they'd all be as crazy as the Lestranges eventually. Draco knew his family's secrets well, and one of them was making sure to marry outside the usual pool every hundred years or so to keep from getting inbred.

"Who is his father?" he asked. Everyone had always wondered. There were all sorts of rumours about Blaise and his mother. Draco wasn't sure those still existed. "I can't recall."

"I think that you need to go to St. Mungos and have a check up. The nurse here is obviously not paying enough attention to your memory loss. I'm starting to get worried." Merlin told Draco as he stared back at him. There was something odd going on and he didn't know if Draco needed real help or not.

"Kingsley Shacklebolt." Merlin continued. "He works in the Department of Mysteries."

Kingsley Shacklebolt? Draco thought about it for a moment, then nodded. It wasn't one of the guesses they'd made, but only because Draco didn't recall Shacklebolt being anything more than an Auror in his own time. He looked at Merlin again. "Your father said it might take a little time for my memories to fully come back, but I'll be fine."

He touched Merlin's hand as they walked into the Great Hall. "You have nothing to worry about." He looked up at the staff table, watching his father talk to some blond professor he didn't know. It was so strange, seeing him here, looking so different. The shorter hair made him look younger and less serious. He wore robes still, but he didn't have the cane Draco was used to feeling terrified of. His family was safe. The rest of the world didn't matter. "Would me mother find it odd if I owled her for a picture of my brother, do you think?"

Merlin wasn't so sure about that. He wasn't sure why Draco's memory was gone in the first place, but he didn't want to question his friend. If his father said it would come back, it would come back. And there wasn't anything to worry about. Right?

"I suppose it's not too odd." Merlin replied with a casual shrug as he sat down at the Slytherin table. "You could go home and get one yourself if you don't want to write her. Father will let you use his floo until we learn to apparate next month."

Draco looked up at that. He could go home? He hadn't seen his mother in months, and ven then things had been... awful. She'd looked haggard and she'd been busy trying to hide the fact that she was terrified and cried all the time when he wasn't around.

"I think I'll go home, then," Draco said, pouring himself a cup of coffee and then reaching for the toast. "Do you want to come with me?" It seemed polite to ask, and Draco assumed his mother wasn't too different here than she was at home. Merlin was supposed to be one of his best friends. His mother would like him. "She'd be happy to see you."

Merlin nodded at that. "Alright. Yes, I'll come home with you." He told him with a small smile, then bit into a piece of toast. He looked Draco over carefully. "It has been far too long since I've seen Cissa. She's like a mother to me, as well."

He smiled at Draco and touched his hand. "Are you sure you can handle your screaming brat of a brother?"

Draco relaxed, nodding. Good. His mother and Merlin actually got along. "I think I'll be able to handle one little kid," he said. Probably. He'd never really been around one before.

He looked at Merlin and smiled. "I want to see my mother. It'll be worth dealing with my brother. How's your sister?" He vaugely remembered something about Merlin having a sister from the memories Tom had shown him.

"I don't know. You could ask her yourself." Tom pointed out as he glanced down the table and motioned at the blonde girl down the row. "She's probably doing unimportant things. Like finding a proper pureblood husband. My father is looking into boys from Bulgaria and France. I believe there was one Italian as well."

He leaned against Draco a bit and smiled. "When do you want to leave? What classes do you have today? We could potentially skip them."

Draco glanced at the blonde, raising an eyebrow. For some reason, he'd expected Merlin's sister to be young too. "Your father doesn't think there's anyone in England suitable for her?" He glanced at Merlin. "Then again, it's not like he can't afford to be picky about who marries his daughter."

He dug his schedule out of his bag, handing it off to Merlin. "What do you think?" he asked. "Skippable? It's not like we have to be gone for the whole day, right?"

"He's not overly fond of the boys in England. And he wants to marry outside the current gene pool." Merlin pointed out with a shrug. "If he gets someone else from somewhere else, it lessens the relation chances."

Merlin glanced down at Draco's schedule. "You can skip Divination and Herbology. You're rubbish at the anyway."

Draco nodded. The Dark Lord seemed close to his grandfather. Maybe he was getting advice. Draco knew that that was why his grandmother had been French. "That's clever of him," he said. "My family likes to do the same thing to keep from getting inbred, like the Lestranges."

He looked down at his schedule and snorted, stuffing it back in his bag and then downing the rest of his coffee. "Let's go, then. I really don't mind skipping either."

Merlin glanced at his toast for a moment, but decided he really didn't need it. He took a drink of his tea and wiped off his mouth before he stood and smiled at Draco, walking towards the exit of the Great Hall.

"I need to get some things from my room anyway." Merlin admitted. "I left some things at home that I was planning to bring to school with me."

Draco followed Merlin out of the Great Hall, doing his best not to question Merlin wanting to get things from his house to bring to school. It would be par for the course if the Dark Lord had made himself at home in the manor.

Would the manor have changed? He hoped not. And he hoped his room was still the same. "Do we need an excuse to go, or do you think he'll just let us skive off?"

"I don't have classes today." Merlin told him with a careless shrug and looked Draco over. "And you're Abraxas's grandson. He thinks the sun shines out of your arse." He pointed out as he led him to his father's spiral staircase. He gave the password and began to walk up the steps.

"You should know that. You're his favourite." Merlin wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "Even more than me."

Draco raised an eyebrow at that when Merlin wrapped an arm around his shoulder. How had that happened? The time travel? Still, it had to be better than being his least favourite. "That'll make things easier, then." Why didn't Merlin have classes?

He stepped off the staircase, debating asking the Dark Lord about all this later, and looked up at Tom sitting behind the Headmaster's desk. "We were wondering if we could use your Floo to go to the manor today," he said. "Just for a brief visit. It feels like forever since I've seen my mother."

Tom looked up from working on a proposal, looking at Draco with a soft smile. He assumed that he'd want to see his mother sooner rather than later. He glanced at his own son and then nodded.

"Of course." He stood from his desk and walked over to his floo. "Merlin doesn't have any classes today. So long as you come back in time for his occulemency classes, we'll be fine."

Draco nodded. "I'll make sure to get him back in time," he promised, following Tom over to the Floo. He glanced back at Merlin. Was he still taking occlumency? He needed to have Bellatrix Lestrange as a teacher. He'd master it in a couple of months.

He tossed some powder into the fire, calling out the address to Malfoy Manor and then stepping into the Floo.

Merlin stepped into the floo, noting the look that Draco gave him. Everyone thought he was taking occlumency still. But, he wasn't. His father was teaching him other things he thought would be useful. And he wasn't allowed to share that.

He stepped out into Malfoy Manor and looked around with a smile. "Good to be home. I love Hogwarts, but this place is better."

Draco glanced at Merlin again when he called the manor home, but mostly he was relieved. Everything looked the way it was supposed to. "It is," he agreed, smiling.

Narcissa had heard the Floo flare up from the sitting room where she was reading to Valentine. She took her son by the hand, leading him to the anteroom where guests Flooed in and smiled when she saw Draco and Merlin. "Boys, I wasn't expecting you to come home. Do you want some cake?" She put a hand on her rounded stomach. "Valentine and I were about to indulge my cravings."

Draco blinked at his mother, doing his best not to look shocked that she was... very obviously pregnant. He looked down at his little brother briefly and then nodded. "I -- yeah," he said. "We'd love some cake."

Valentine toddled over to his big brother and smiled at him with large, dark eyes, brown curls draping over his eyes. "Dway." He held up a chubby little hand at him and smiled, shoving his other hand into his mouth.

Merlin glanced down at the child for a moment, trying not to wrinkle his nose. "Valentine. It's good to see you again."

Draco looked down at his brother. It was a good thing Tom had told them they were half-siblings or he would have been very confused. He offered his hand to the boy. "Yes," he agreed. "You look big."

Narcissa laughed at the expression on Merlin's face, walking up and hugging him and Draco. "Come on," she said, kissing Merlin's temple. "Draco will keep Valentine occupied while the house-elves make up plates for the four of us. How's school?"

"It's school." Merlin replied as he followed Narcissa to the dining area. He was kind of hungry, since Draco had made him abandon his toast. And no one was a better cook than the Malfoy elves, except maybe the Lestranges.

"Draco's been having a bit of a memory problem." Merlin told her, knowing that Draco wouldn't tell her himself.

"A memory problem?" Narcissa turned to look at Draco, giving him a concerned look as she sat on the couch. "What kind of memory problem? Was there an accident in one of your classes?"

"It's nothing," Draco promised, holding Valentine's slightly sticky hand as he walked into the dining room. He frowned at Merlin a little as he passed him, then took a seat across from his mother. "I spent a long time with Merlin's father yesterday sorting things out and he thinks I'm fine. Don't worry about it."

"Tom is a very smart man." Augustus nodded as he walked into the room where Narcissa was. He smiled down at his girlfriend and kissed her forehead, then ruffled Draco's hair. "I didn't know you'd be coming home, Draco. Your mother misses you."

He sat down. "What kind of memory loss? Snape didn't have you test any potions, did he? I lost an entire week once when he had me test one in school."

Narcissa gave Augustus a fond smile, curling up against him on the couch. "I hope it's not a potion thing," she said. "You never know what the future side effects of something like that could be."

Draco found it... extremely weird, watching his mother cuddling up to some... man. At least Rookwood wasn't covered in pockmarks. He looked down at Valentine. It was obvious that his half-brother was Rookwood's son. "It wasn't a potion," he said. "I'm not sure what it was, but Tom seemed certain my memories would come back. It'll just take some time."

"I'm sure that you'll get them back." Merlin nodded, trying not to watch Augustus and Narcissa on the couch. He kind of wanted that. Even if he didn't fully understand it yet, he wanted Draco to hold him like that. He shrugged. "You're the smartest man I know."

Draco was a little surprised by Merlin saying he was the smartest man he knew. Even Pansy hadn't flattered him like that. She knew him too well to think something like that about him, probably. "I trust you father's opinion," Draco said. Probably. If they didn't come back, he'd just fake it. He looked down at his brother, smiling a little as cake appeared in front of all of them. "But after losing some memories it's nice to be home again."

Valentine smiled at the cake when it arrived in front of them and grabbed a fork, shoving it into the cake. He looked up at Draco as he shoved it into his mouth, chewing. He loved his big brother.

Augustus laughed at Valentine and reached over, ruffling his head. "He asks where you are all the time. He misses his big brother when you're gone."

Draco looked down at his brand new half-brother and smiled a little. He'd always liked being an only child, but if his brother liked him then that was all right. "He's got good taste," he said.

Narcissa laughed too. "I make very good babies," she said, touching her rounded stomach. She looked at Merlin and smiled. "And they have excellent taste in best friends. If your father says we don't need to worry, I'm sure Draco will be okay, Merlin."
