The idea of having nowhere to go was a scary one to Shay. Even if he didn't feel particularly attached to New Jersey as a place to live, he still felt a strong sense of connection to his mother. She was home. Elijah didn't have that, and he felt the strongest urge to be that for him.
"Well, you have somewhere to go now. I don't want to be anywhere if you're not around." Shay couldn't fathom life without Elijah, and he was infinitely thankful that he didn't have to share him anymore.
