chancellor, reagan

It had only been a few days since Reagan had been home. Liam had been with Reagan for the past 4 days but that morning he'd gone into work. It was the first time he'd really been alone since he'd gotten back, and he decided to go down to the basement to paint. When painting didn't go so well, he decided to call Chancellor to ask him how the investigation was going and to see how Liam was doing.

Chancellor had been at the office for three days and nights and finally went back to the hotel to shower and sleep for four hours on a surface other than the sofa in the conference room. When he returned to work he jumped right back into it but ended up in a physical altercation with Liam. After returning to the conference room he dismissed everyone and continued the case on his own. When he saw Reagan's nam,e on the display of his phone he was moody but answered. "What?"

That tone of voice wasn't exactly welcoming, and Reagan needed a moment to react to it. "I just wanted to see how things were going, but you sound busy..." he said after a moment. "I'm sorry to have bothered you."

He was silent for a second to calm down before he started to speak. "You aren't bothering me. What can I do for you, Reagan?" He really didn't want to talk to him but he knew he was probably feeling fragile.

"I know that Liam's trying to be level headed about everything, but you guys can't work this case forever and I'm afraid he's gonna lose it," Reagan said after a moment as he sat down on the couch. "You're the only other person who really knows him. I'm just worried about him."

"We'll solve this case, Reagan. But you are right. He needs to let it go and without your help he won't be able to. There is a lot of pressure on you and given what has happened to you it might not seem fair, but you're going to have to help me, help him get passed this."

Reagan closed his eyes and lifted his free hand up to rub his eyes a little bit. "All right," he said softly. He'd do anything for Liam, even if he still had a lot of healing to do himself, he'd put Liam first. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine." It was a lie, but a good one. "Don't back burner your own healing, Reagan. But you are going to need to make sure that Liam will help you and you are going to need to help him get over this too."

"Are you at all close to catching him?" Reagan asked after a moment as he dropped his hand down to his lap. "Any idea where he is? I'm... Afraid he might come back. Especially for Murphy, that kid grew so attached to that man, it worries me."

Chancellor was quiet again for another moment and he frowned. "We're working on it. I give you my word, Reagan, I am doing the best that I can right now. If you are really worried about Murphy then we can see about getting him into protective custody but I can't guarantee that he is going to take it."

They all had agents or local law enforcement keeping an eye on them, but Reagan was still worried. He was also very worried about Liam. "Chancellor," he started after a moment, swallowing hard. "Adam had a real hatred for Liam. I couldn't even say his name. I'm afraid that he might try to go after him, that this might set him off..."

"I'll make sure that I stay with him, Reagan. It isn't going to do you any good to be sitting there worrying about this." He said softly. "I can come and get you and you can stay in my office here if you'd like."

"No, I'm fine, I'll be fine," Reagan assured the man. "I trust you, I know you will do everything you can and you'll make sure Liam is safe. Thank you, for that."

"You're welcome." He said, gritting his teeth as he talked to him about it. He was really pissed off and pretty upset at this point and he didn't even know what to do right then. "If you need anything else just call me, all right?"

"All right," Reagan said softly. "Thanks," he added genuinely, though he got the feeling he'd said or done something wrong. He hungup the phone and swallowed hard as he rubbed his hands over his face. He really didn't feel up to painting anymore.
