Shay, Elijah
Adjusting to life outside of a cage, and one without Adam, was hard. Elijah was thankful he had Shay, or else it would have been a he'll of a lot harder. He'd been keeping in touch with Parker and Murphy, and it was strange how easy it was to continue their friendships in the real world. Lijah had been terrified that he might lose touch with the both of them, afraid they wouldn't need him anymore or want to know him because of the bad memories. Luckily, that wasn't the case.

Knowing that Adam was out there somewhere was unnerving. Elijah tried to pretend he was fine, and that he wasn't scared, but it was hard. When he wokeup from a nightmare, he shot up in bed and blinked rapidly as his heart raced. For a moment, he was absolutely terrified that he was back in that basment, and he reached out blindly until he felt Shay next to him. He sniffed back the urge to cry as he sank back down and pressed his face in against Shay's neck.

Occasionally, Shay had nightmares, lingering fears that Adam would come back. He wasn't sure if those fears would stop once the man was caught, but he at least hoped they would. When Elijah sat up in bed, Shay stirred but didn't wake up entirely. But feeling Elijah nuzzle into him made him open his eyes.

"What's wrong?" He could guess, but he didn't want to assume and make it worse.

Elijah hadn't meant to wake Shay, but he was glad to hear the other's voice. He snuggled closer to Shay and held onto him tightly. The nearness of the boy he considered his boyfriend was extremely comforting.

"I had a dream about him," he murmured. "I wokeup and was scared we were back there."

Shay put his hand against Elijah's cheek. He wished more than anything that he could take those thoughts and fears away from Elijah, even of that meant he had to endure them on his own. "You're safe," he reassured him as best he could. His long fingers drug down Elijah's shoulder and down his arm until he could lace their fingers together.

"Do you think the worry will get better if they catch him?" He shifted so that he could sit up and drew Elijah into his lap.

Elijah relaxed when he felt their fingers lace up together, and he wrapped his free arm around Shay's shoulder when the taller boy sat up and pulled him into his lap.

"Maybe," he said softly with a sigh before he turned his head to kiss Shay's cheek. "Have you had any dreams about him?"

"Mostly dreams about him and you together." He hadn't actually seen much of it, but he'd seen enough to burn images in his head that came back to haunt him now. Thank god the bruises had begun to fade and he didn't have to be reminded that Adam had beat up on both of them.

He kissed the top of Elijah's head protectively. "Sometimes he's making me take pictures of you. I see everything through a lens."

Elijah closed his eyes and focused on the way Shay's voice sounded, and how he could feel the vibration of it when he rested his head against the side of Shay's throat.

"I wish you didn't have to see that," he said after a moment. "Sometimes I think I'm really lucky to be blind. I never had to see you with him."

"I never really thought I was the jealous sort," he said quietly. "But I don't suppose that was the most typical situation." He combed his fingers through Elijah's hair, still trying to soothe him from the trauma of the dream. "Have you talked to the others recently? How are they doing?" Elijah was better at keeping in contact with them than Shay was.

"Parker seems happy, I think he's a little freaked out. Five years is a long time... He has a lot to get use to," Elijah murmured. He supposed he had a lot to get use to as well. "Murphy's trying but he sounds sad, still. He's moved in with his boyfriend again." He pressed his mouth to Shay's jaw and sighed a little.

They still hadn't slept together, but Elijah really wanted to. He'd wanted Shay so much when they were being held captive, and it had been agony not to have him.

Shay still had the lingering fear that he might use Elijah. He wanted to prove to himself as well as the other boy that his desire to be with Elijah had little to do with just the physical. He'd waited, not wanting to pressure him into having sex before he was ready. But he'd just ended up backing himself into a corner, too fearful that something might go wrong. What if he touched Elijah like Adam had touched him and brought it all back? He didn't know if he could handle seeing even a flicker of fear in Elijah's eyes.

But he was working up to it, slowly but surely. "I think Murphy was the worst off in there. Not to compare experiences, or anything, but he just seemed the most attached to Adam. It freaked me out a little." A lot, actually. Shay had hated the man so much that he couldn't fathom sympathy for him. Perhaps if he'd been there longer, and he was glad he hadn't had the opportunity to find out.

Elijah stifled a yawn as he closed his eyes, and he rested his cheek against one of Shay's shoulders before he nuzzled his nose down against the material of the other boy's shirt. He loved the smell of Shay mixed in with the laundry soap the other boy's Mom bought, and he enjoyed the comfort both scents gave him.

"He was attached, he still is attached," Elijah said quietly after a moment. "I think Murphy and Adam had a different relationship than the what the rest of us had with him. I mean, we all had different relationships... But I think Murphy ... I don't know, maybe Adam let him know things that none of us ever got to know." Maybe that was how he'd gained some of Murphy's sympathy.

Shay just couldn't hold him tightly enough. He kept readjusting his arms around the other just so he could squeeze him without suffocating him. "Do you really think anything Adam could have told us would have made what he did sympathetic?" He imagined it was some sob story about abuse. Well, lots of people were abused but they didn't rape innocent people--at least that was Shay's view.

He sighed, getting frustrated with the idea. Scooting out from under Elijah, he stood up. "I'm going to go get a glass of milk. Do you want anything?" He was going to leave him sitting there, but he couldn't take a step away from him. "Come with me?" he finally asked.

"I don't know, Murphy is too sweet for his own good I think," Elijah said quietly.

Elijah was sweet, too. But there was a quality about Murphy that was different, like he'd understand anything anyone told him. Like he'd accept things no matter how awful if he could relate or feel empathy for someone's situation.

When Shay moved to get up, Elijah was ready to curl up against the pillows, but he was thankful for the request to go with Shay. He nodded his head and lifted a hand up to Shay, and once the other boy took a hold of it, Elijah got up. He was learning his way around Shay's house quite well, well enough that he could get around on his own, but he liked holding Shay's hand.

"I know it's hard to talk about things still, but sometimes it helps," he said after a moment. "It helps me to know we're not there anymore. That we're really in your Mom's house like all the times we talked and dreamed about, eating her meatloaf that you love so much."

Elijah was right, talking about Adam and their previous experiences helped to set up the comforting juxtaposition to their current situation. Sometimes, it was easy to pretend that they'd always been there at his mom's place. But that only made the nightmares more terrifying and surreal. Shay needed to keep the bad memories just so he could know how good he had it now.

Padding to the kitchen, he let go of Elijah's hand just long enough to open the fridge and grab the milk. Once he'd poured it, he slipped his fingers around the other boy's again. "Did you want anything? Actually I think there's leftover meatloaf in the fridge." It made him smile to say it and it was evident in his tone.

Elijah leaned against the countertop and kept a hold of Shay's hand as he nodded his head. Meatloaf sounded good, even if it was in the middle of the night. There was something so freeing about being able to warm up meatloaf in the kitchen in the wee hours of the morning that made Elijah smile.

"Warm some up," he said softly, "We can share."

He grinned at that idea and got the tupperware out of the fridge. He was trying to be quiet, but the sounds of meal preparing could still be heard: the pop of the lid, the soft clink of a plate, the beeping numbers as he punched in the time on the microwave.

"This is kind of amazing, you know? Hold on." He disappeared into the living room for less than 10 seconds and came back with a camera. He wanted to commemorate their first midnight snack together. The kitchen light was dimly lit, just a couple under the cupboard lights and the glow of the microwave. Shay fiddled with the camera settings and then started clicking photos of Elijah standing there.

Those noises sounded so foreign to Elijah, but he was memorizing them, liking the way the clank of the plate sounded and even the way that the microwave seemed to hum. He waited for Shay to come back, and he when he heard the soft footsteps of the other boy returning, he smiled softly. The click of the camera was a sound he was definitely getting use to, especially around Shay.

"I wish I could see the pictures you take," he said softly. "I wish I could see your face, too."

Photographing Elijah was like nothing else. Even though the boy was aware of the camera, there was a sweet disconnect between him and the lens. It made Shay feel like he was really capturing him rather than trying to maneuver around him looking at the camera.

"Has there ever been any research about restoring sight for your condition?" Shay didn't know much about it, but now that he was out, he was intent on learning all about Elijah.

As the microwave beeped, Elijah shook his head a little bit and chewed on the inside of his lower lip.

"No, not that I know of. I never even really thought to look for that sort of thing," he admitted after a moment. "I was born this way, so... I just... It's who I am, I guess. I don't know, is something like that even possible?"

Elijah's eyesight hadn't even been looked at by a doctor since he was a very small boy, but technology had come a long ways since then.

Getting the meatloaf out of the microwave, he got two forks out of the drawer and put one in Elijah's hand, letting his own hand linger a little bit before he set the plate between them. "I think it would be scary to suddenly be able to see again. God, what if you thought I was hideous? You'd have to close your eyes just to kiss me." He was half teasing and leaned forward to kiss Elijah's cheek. But the possibility was there, he supposed.

"I've heard of transplants and stuff, surgery that helps people get function back. It probably all depends on the reason someone is blind." He put a bite of meatloaf in his mouth and chewed thoughtfully.

"I know you're perfect," Elijah said as he took a bite of meatloaf. He didn't get many good home cooked meals growing up after his Mom had passed, and though Adam cooked for him, it didn't feel the same as when Shay's Mom made something. He reached for Shay's glass of milk, and when his fingertips found it, he took a sip. "I like living here with you," he murmured with a smile. "And your Mom."

"I like it too." He'd been meaning to move out and find a place of their own. But every time he really thought about it, he got scared. He wanted to stay where he felt safe and he felt safe with his mother. He sighed. "So you don't mind living here with her? I wanted to find some awesome place on our own, but I feel safe here."

"I do," Elijah said as he took another bite and licked his lips as he settled a hip against the counter. "Maybe eventually we can get our own awesome place eventually, but for now, here is good. Plus I think I want to get a job. Maybe I can teach kids like me how to play the violin, or work in a music shop."

Shay grinned at the idea. "That would be great." He thought a job would help get Elijah back into the swing of life. Shay would get back to portraits and then they'd both get back to normal together. Or at least they'd have the opportunity to find their own version of normal. "There's a music store in town, a couple actually. And maybe we could put an ad in the paper about tutoring." He loved the idea of coming home to hearing Elijah helping someone find music.

Elijah had plenty of money from what his mother had left him, for when he turned 21, but he wanted to work. He wanted to go back to college and get a degree to teach music to kids. He wanted to do the things he always wanted to do, and now he had a real chance. There were many things he never thought he'd get to do - like live with someone he trusted, make a life for himself with someone, have a boyfriend. He wasn't even sure if that was what Shay was.

"Are you my boyfriend?" he asked after a moment, his voice a little shy. "Because I would like that. If you wanted... I mean."

The question caught him off guard. Shay had assumed that they were boyfriends, though he'd never given it that name in his head. Elijah's trepidation was sweet and he set his fork down. Taking Elijah's fork too, he set it next to his own on the plate and took both of Elijah's hands in his own.

"I'm your boyfriend," he said quietly and then leaned forward to nuzzle his cheek against the other boy's. "I guess I never asked you," he laughed. "I just sort of assumed. That could've been a sticky situation if you weren't so damn sweet."

When Shay took his fork away and set it down, Elijah wasn't sure what was going on until he felt his hand in the other boy's. He closed his eyes and turned his head to press a kiss to Shay's cheek. He smiled happily and wrapped an arm around the taller boy.

"I kind of assumed too, but I wanted to be sure," he mumbled.

He was relieved to hear that Elijah had assumed as well. Finishing his milk, he rinsed out the glass and filled it up with water to take back to their room. "I think I might be able to sleep again," he said with a little yawn. This little experience with Elijah had comforted him a great deal and relaxed him into drowsiness again.

It had done the same for Elijah, and he took a hold of Shay's free hand so that he could follow the other boy back down the hall and to their room. He liked to think of it as their room. It was bizarre just how easily he'd settled in at the Lindsay home.

"Me too," he said softly as he leaned his head in to kiss Shay's cheek. The boy was moving, though, so he'd gotten his jaw instead. "Thanks for sitting up with me."

"I got meatloaf and kisses out of it, so no problem," he teased.

When they got upstairs, Shay set his glass of water on the bedside table and slipped under the covers. He reached for Elijah and tugged him down onto the bed with him.

Elijah settled down right on top of Shay, and he pressed a kiss against the taller boy's clavicle before he lifted his head to kiss his mouth.

"Do you think we could go get my hair cut tomorrow?" he asked as he swept a few fingers through Shay's hair. "It feels really shaggy," he added with a yawn before he settled his head back down and closed his eyes.

Shay happily mused that those ordinary, everyday sorts of questions would never seem mundane to him again. After the simple choices in life had been stolen from him, experiencing them again would always be a pleasure. Experiencing them with Elijah would be an even greater thing.

"Shaggy like a muppet," he kissed the top of his head fondly.

"What's a muppet?" Elijah mumbled, half asleep all ready. It was obvious by his breathing and the way his body had relaxed that he might not even be awake enough to fully understand the answer to that question.

If Shay hadn't been in such a happy place right then, that might have made him sad. To think that Elijah had never been able to see a muppet before was heartbreaking.

"I don't even know where to begin to tell you what a muppet is," he laughed softly and left it at that as he felt Elijah drift away from consciousness.
