Clark had been working most with middle eastern languages. They were important nowadays with the political climate and Clark found himself embroiled in interpreting for national security issues. While he loved his job, he missed some of the jobs he'd had early on in his life when he was strictly an ASL interpretor for a civilian agency. That's why he lept at the opportunity to come to Quantico and work with the BAU. He'd heard of the man for whom he was to interpret and had been disappointed when he wasn't selected to interpret for him when he was hired. He'd been needed in other areas, but now there was an opening and Clark was one of the few so well versed in ASL. Today was his first day and he dropped his briefcase off at his desk.
For the most part, Ally wasn't such an asshole. Yes, he was temperamental but with good reason. His job was important and he did a good job, but he felt out of place sometimes. He was young, maybe the youngest person on the crew, and though he occasionally went into the field, he couldn't do much and more often than not he was left behind. It also didn't help that the other interpreter hadn't been able to keep up with the fast paced conversations in the meeting rooms or on the jet. In the end Ally had yelled at the man, the first time he'd ever spoken in front of the team, and the man had quit the next afternoon. Now he had a new interpreter and he was dreading it. Ally was sitting at his desk, dicking around on his lap top while he waited. When he saw Clark come over he lifted his head up and reached for his hearing aids to put them back in.
It was pretty easy to pick Ally out of a lineup--not that there were many people in the office just then and a man who looked far too young to be here stuck out like a sore thumb. "Ally?" he fingerspelled. Clark was of the impression that one could be professional and casual all at once and so he didn't bother with last names or calling Ally 'agent.' If he was going to be his ears and voice, then he wanted to be friendly with the boy. He walked over to him and reached out a hand to shake.
Ally didn't stand up but he took Clark's hand and gave it a shake. Once they let go of their hands he signed to introduce himself and he showed Clark the sign he used to represent his name so that he wouldn't have to finger spell it every time. "Who did you piss off to get stuck with me?" Ally asked him, convinced that most of the people around the BAU, with the exception of Wyatt, hated him.
He noted Ally's hearing aids, gauging how much they might help him understand. It was important to him to understand the full situation, knowing all of the nuances as best he could and as early as he could. "Actually I applied the first time and was upset that I got turned down." He spoke as well as signed this time, falling easily into his usual method of interpreting for the deaf. Seeing Ally sign so fluidly made him think of his mother and he found himself so very happy to be here. "So I guess they finally figured out whoever they hired before was the wrong choice."
"He was too slow and I told him as much. I think I hurt his feelings. He also treated me like I was retarded or a little kid. I'm not either of those things, so don't bother with acting like it. With the hearing aids I can't understand you but I can pick up severely muffled noise and so if you need my attention you can yell at me."
"Good to know; I do so like yelling." Clark was not easily put off by attitude, even if the boy did seem to have it in spades. But Clark was going to have a difficult time not thinking of him as a boy and instead treating him like a full grown man. At least, he thought he was going to have trouble with that just by his intitial instinct to protect him after only spending minutes with him. "I've been signing since before I could speak, so I think I'll be able to keep up."
"All right. If you can't hack it I won't be afraid to tell you that I think you suck." He was trying to think of what else Clark would need to know. "You'll want to meet the rest of the team since you'll be worker with them too. Start with Liam, he's in charge."
Clark smiled widely. "Are you always so abrasive or are you just trying to make sure I can pass the mustard?" It didn't bother him so much. In fact, it was setting Ally up to be a challenge he really wanted to conqueor.
"Always." Ally said with one gesture of his hand. "Also I will probably make you take me on my errands too. I can't drive and the bureau always assigns some idiot to cart me around and it isn't like they can communicate with me." He didn't talk out loud, he just signed to Clark, not caring if other people were put off by it.
Clark was easy going, but he wasn't a push over. "You are more than welcome to ask me if I would take you on some errands. But I'd prefer not to be treated like a lackey. I have numerous degrees in foreign languages and linguistics, and I'm considerably older than you. My job is to interpret, anything else I'll consider a favor. I'm usually more than willing though if you ask rather than tell."
The fact that Clark was standing up for himself made Ally smile. The other guy had been such a pushover and it had been something Ally took advantage of. "All right. Fair enough. But keep in mind that if you say no that I will come back cranky and some poor FBI underling will be crying probably."
Nodding, he went to go and get a cup of coffee and helped himself to not one, but two of the donuts someone had brought in. When he returned, it was clear that the second donut was not for Ally. He set everything down though so he could continue to use his hands. "I will certainly keep that in mind."
Ally had already put away a few of the donuts and so he wasn't phased by Clark not bringing him one. He had a thirty two ounce soda sitting on the edge of his desk and he was typing up the finishing touches on a report that he needed to turn into Liam. When he saw Clark's hand smoving he lifted his head and looked up at him. "What?"
"If we're going to work well together, you're going to have to learn to keep an eye out for me. I know I said I liked yelling but I'm not going to be doing it constantly to get your attention." Apparently that was the way to get Clark's goat, ignoring him. A thin line of tension quickly dispersed and he picked up his coffee and donuts to go and meet Liam.
