To Vegas
The phone call from Vegas had been more of an annoyance than anything. Seth had just gotten home from work and he was fixing himself a drink--how surprising. Putting the phone down, he couldn't possibly imagine what could be so important that he had to get dressed again and go over to Vegas's place. Taking just a swig of the scotch, he sighed and held the glass tightly in his hand. After a moment of contemplation, he set it down, knowing himself well enough to know it would be stupid to get shit-faced before going to see Vegas.

When he arrived at the man's place, he took a few minutes in the car, rubbing his temples. If this was an intervention of some sort, he was going to be sorely put out. He couldn't imagine why Vegas needed to speak with him so urgently. Getting out of the car, he headed up to knock on the door and waited for an answer.

Vegas had meant to call Seth much earlier in the day, but he'd had to wait at the station for Agent James to arrive, and after speaking with her he headed home with a cop assigned to his apartment. After no sign of Adam for hours, Vegas told the cop to go home. Vegas knew that the man didn't want him. He'd tried to lure the man to stick around more, and he'd just taken off. He'd gotten whatever he wanted out of their little conversation and now he was gone, and all day long Vegas had an awful feeling of dread. He'd felt stressed and anxious, though it had finally died down as the evening approached.

Mika was curled up, asleep in his bed, and Vegas was sitting by the window just staring out at the ground. He was watching cars pass by, though really he was just spacing out. He didn't even see Seth as he headed up from the parking lot, and when he heard the knock he jumped a bit. Smoothing a hand over his face he closed his eyes for a moment, then he got up to go answer the door.

"Hey," he said softly. "Come on in."

As soon as Seth saw the man, a horrible thought crossed his mind. What if Vegas couldn't feel Murphy anymore? What if that was the reason he'd called and needed to talk in person. Seth always claimed that Vegas's twin-sense was bullshit, but deep down it had comforted him immensely to think that maybe Murphy was still alive somewhere out there. "What is it?" he didn't waste any time trying to get to the point, especially now that bad images were racing through his head about what terrible things Vegas might say.

He tugged his coat off and tossed it on a chair. He still smelled vaguely of motor oil and gasoline from work in the shop because he hadn't bothered to shower when he'd gotten home.

Vegas closed the door behind Seth and went to go sit down on the couch. It was clear that he was exhausted. He hadn't slept at all since the morning before, but he couldn't sleep. All he could think about was Murphy, and the fact that he'd actually spoken to the man who'd taken him.

"The man who took Murphy came to the club I was playing at last night," he said after a moment. "The Agents were right. He came to watch me play. He talked to me."

A blank look greeted Vegas. "What?" was the only word that Seth could muster at that moment. At least Vegas hadn't said that Murphy was hurt or dead. But this was quite a bomb anyway. Seth wasn't even quite sure what it meant and he rubbed his hand over his face. "I'm sorry, what?" he repeated, more intent this time in his own confusion.

Vegas rubbed his hand over his face, and then his mouth as he closed his eyes. It almost felt surreal by now, as if it had never happened, and he'd just dreamt it all up but he knew that wasn't the case.

"I came to the bar for a drink," he said as he dropped his hand to his lap and opened his eyes. "This guy was standing there. He started talking to me. I didn't think much of it until he asked why I didn't play the piano anymore, and I asked him how he even knew if I played at all. He said something about how he heard a girl say I use to play, or someone with my band did, and I said he must have mistaken me for my twin brother. He asked me where my twin brother was, I said I didn't know. I said he was missing. But I knew that he was alive, he seemed oddly interested, asked me how I knew. I said something about feeling him, about knowing when he's upset or hurt, and I lied and said something about being able to hear him play sometimes. He said Murphy's name to me, then. I hadn't said Murphy's name. He said 'That's ridiculous, you can't feel Murphy', and then he walked away. But he said his name, Seth. He said Murphy's name."

Always the naysayer, Seth shook his head. "Maybe he'd heard it from the girl who told him about the piano. How can you be sure it was him?" He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. "What does this mean?" Because even though his initial response was to deny the fact that Vegas had run into the kidnapper, deep down he believed that it was true. "You called the cops, right? You didn't follow him?" He tried to think what he would have done in that situation and he honestly couldn't come up with an answer that didn't involve going ballistic on the man. But that wouldn't have helped anyone.

"If he heard it from the girl, then he wouldn't have bothered to ask why I didn't play the piano anymore," Vegas replied as he sat back against the couch and closed his eyes. "I followed him outside, I got his plate number and vehicle description. I should have followed him, I should have gotten in my car to follow him but there wasn't any time. I just keep thinking I did the wrong thing. I wanted to strangle him or - I don't know... But then Murphy really would be lost, that man is the only one who knows where he is."

"You should have followed him," Seth agreed. He wasn't going to be one of the logical people who told Vegas that he'd done the right thing. "Why didn't you? He was probably going right back to Murphy. You had him!" Seth always blurted the first asshole thing that came to his mind. He didn't think the right way, just the brash way. He pushed his hands through his hair feeling sick and angry. Vegas had had the man who did this and he let him get away. So close and yet so far. "You had him," Seth repeated in a forlorn tone.

Vegas didn't know what to say. The words stung, cut through right to the bone, but he wasn't angry with Seth for being honest. Vegas agreed with him and wondered the same thing. And if the roles would have been reversed, he would have said the same thing. Swallowing hard, he dipped his head down and covered his face with his hands as his eyes welled up with tears. He hadn't cried in front of Seth in such a long time, in fact it had only happened once before, when Murphy first went missing. But he could feel a nervous breakdown coming on and he was on the verge of losing it.

The moment Vegas started to break down, Seth softened. He saw Murphy in front of him, sad and alone. "I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean to accuse you. You got the license plate..." that didn't seem like enough and he got up to go and wrap his arms around him. "I've treated you like shit and that's not what Murphy would have wanted." It was very uncharacteristic of Seth to initiate. Contact, but he found that he couldn't bear Vegas's tears because it took him right back to the beginning when Murphy had been taken. "Please stop, please don't feel guilty."

When Seth came over to hug him, Vegas tensed up a bit. The only people he could really be affectionate with were Mika and Murphy. And Murphy was gone, and he could have followed Adam and found him.

"No, you're right, I should have followed him," he said shakily into his hands, causing his voice to be muffled. "I wasn't thinking. I should have followed him."

Seth felt the tension and it only highlighted the fact that even though Vegas looked like Murphy, he was definitely not Murphy. He let go quickly, almost pushing Vegas away. "Well it's over, don't dwell. You called the agents or whoever they are, they can probably use the lead."

He didn't know how they would, but that's why he wasn't with the FBI.

Vegas straightened up and wiped at his cheeks as he swallowed hard. He cleared his throat and gave a sobering sniff as he wiped at his nose with the back of his hand, and he glanced over at Seth sadly.

"I still think you're right," he said softly. "Everyone keeps saying things like what if he had a gun. He could have killed me. But you're being honest, you're telling the truth. You're saying what I have been saying all along. I should have followed him."

"Followed him at a distance, maybe found where he was keeping Murphy. The police people eally don't believe he's dead? Then that guy must be keeping him someplace. He was probably headed back there. But if you'd been caught then no one would have his license number." He was at least thinking a little more practically.

Resting his hands on his hips, Seth looked haggard at best. "Do you have anything to drink?" He needed something with which to swallow this all down. A chaser as it were.

Vegas let out an exhausted sigh before he rubbed at his face again. He shook his head a little, and his expression softened a bit as his brows furrowed together. It was an expression that he and Murphy shared, though Vegas didn't use it very often.

"Sorry," he said quietly. "I'm pretty sure he would kill me even if I did, though."

That expression nearly killed him. "The damage is already done. And if he blames me for drinking after all of this then--well it doesn't matter because he's not coming back." A last ditch effort not to have to deal with the idea that Murphy might come back and hate him for drinking. Every time he tasted alcohol he felt incredibly guilty and that only added to the desire to drink.

"Seth," Vegas said softly, and he wet his lips before he met the other boy's hair. "You know he won't blame you. He'll forgive you because he loves you, and Murphy always forgives. And I know that it's scary to think he might come back, because it's crushing your hope every day that he doesn't. But he could come back. Isn't he worth being sober for, if he does? Because I think he's coming back."

"Of course he's worth being sober for, why do you think I quit in the first fucking place?" He snapped because of how ashamed he felt for being so weak. Murphy had been the reason for Seth's success, giving him the sort of support he'd needed to finally quite drinking. He felt like a worthless piece of shit everytime he took that first drink, but damn if the feeling didn't start going away when he hit that blissful state of drunk.

He shook his head, done with that topic of conversation. "What did they say when you told them? Did they say they could find the guy with a license plate number? Do you still have it? There's got to be someplace online that we could look it up. Hire a detective service or something. I feel like we have to do something instead of waiting for the authorities to do it."

"I'm just saying he needs us to be strong for him, Seth. That's all. And I know you can do it, you've always done it before. He's going to need the both of us," Vegas pointed out before he rubbed his face and lowered his gaze down to the floor. "They're on it right now. One of the agents came right out here and talked with me, then went right back. They're on their way out to some address right now." Chancellor was keeping him posted.

Should Adam just not be at the house or should there be a struggle and he gets away? (For now)

They'd come to talk to him and he'd not been much help. Not because he wasn't forthcoming with his information but because the information itself wasn't anything they hadn't heard before. He didn't say anything more about being sober for Murphy because all he could think about right now was which bar he was going to stop at on his way home.

"Well then you'll call me if they hear anything," he said off-handedly as he stood up to put his coat back on so he could leave.

one of the bathrooms at some point just in case liam did come around and knowing him, that he'd look at just about everything in the house - the basement door looks like a pantry door, right?]

Vegas couldn't bring himself to look up at Seth for a moment, and he swallowed hard as he got his emotions in check before he finally lifted his gaze up to the other man and offered a nod of his head.

"Of course, as soon as I hear anything I'll call you," he said. "Take care of yourself, all right, Seth?"

Seth felt like a great big disappointment, but that wasn't all that out of the ordinary for him, so he withstood the sensation of Vegas not being able to look at him.

"Because I'm so good at that, right?" he smirked before heading out. He didn't expect to hear from Vegas later that night, that was for sure.
