Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
When: Tuesday, November 25th, 1997, Late at night
Where: Gryffindor Common Room in front of the large fireplace
Who: Ginny Weasley and Neville Longbottom
What: Sleepover! But without hair braiding, face masks, and Truth or Dare. Possibly with gossip and squealing. But very masculine squealing on behalf of Neville, natch.
Status: In progresivo
Rating: Fun for all

Ginny frowned at her stick, two sad lumps of marshmallow still wedged there. In actuality, she had never made S'mores in her life, they had always been made for her, and usually magically--when her father wanted to do it the "real way," he'd be the one futzing with the idiot stick himself while she played Quidditch with her brothers. This rustic, Muggle-ish way of toasting marshmallows was frustrating at best. Whenever she tried to pull them off, the charcoal-like outer skin slid off, and the marshmallow left behind still felt uncooked!

With an annoyed grunt, she took them off of the stick and grabbed her wand, charming them toasted all the way through. Sheepishly, she grinned at Neville as she reached for a graham cracker and square of chocolate. "I got a bit frustrated," she admitted with a guilty shrug. "But come on! They're not as good when they're cold!"

Neville liked to consider himself good at cooking the muggle way. He had learned different techniques from watching his Gran cook, and often times she liked to teach him things, claiming that the ability to cook the muggle way was the best ability to have. He was good at cakes and pies, but he wasn't exactly an expert at trying to figure this S'more thing out. The ingredients were delicious, and he loved chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers, but cooking in the middle of the Gryffindor common room wasn't an easy task.

He wasn't one for complaining, however, and a night like this didn't leave him with anything to really complain about. He had the company of one of his favourite people in the world, and there were a bunch of blankets and pillows surrounding them, along with their stash of sweets and drinks. "I reckon they taste a little bit better when they are still mushy on the inside, though," he commented, grinning and licking a leftover piece of marshmallow off his finger. "Just don't start it on fire! Then we'd lose the marshmallow for good," he added.

Ginny laughed, bumping her arm against Neville's. He had been her best friend for so long, she just thought of him like her seventh brother. He had always been there for her, through every bad time--for the rare times that she had cried. There was no one on earth with a sweeter, kinder heart than Neville Longbottom, and she got to be his friend. She wondered when he'd understand how blessed she was to know him.

But she wasn't thinking of such deep, romantic notions of friendship; she bloody coveted Neville's perfect s'mores. "How are you doing that!" she protested, pointing at his. "It's golden and nice and not looking like the After photo of some arson scene!" she said, trying not to laugh.

Neville knew that Ginny didn't need anymore brothers, but there was always a part of him, right from the moment she had been sorted into Gryffindor and Ron had loudly declared that she was his sister, that felt like he could be that long lost Weasley. Even when it seemed like Harry and Ron were off on their own while Seamus and Dean were bonding in the common room, Neville couldn't feel entirely alone because he'd always had Ginny there to keep him company, and show him what a true friend was like. Sometimes he just had to sit back and really think about how lucky he was.

Neville shrugged, not entirely sure himself how his marshmallows were turning out the way they were. He was actually surprised that he hadn't lit the entire castle on fire yet, to be completely honest. "I'd be very happy to swap marshmallows with you. I'd hate to think Ginny was getting too many After photos," he grinned, raising an eyebrow and looking at her thoughtfully.

She waved her stick at him, her eyes narrowed and wary. "Oh, no, Mr. Longbottom, for then I would owe you a life long sugar debt. For the rest of our lives, until the day we are in the old wizards' home, you would be able to lean to me and whisper s'mores, and I would have to do anything for you...or at least get you any sweet," she said sagely. "I know your game, Neville," she said, swirling her stick at him, "and I say no sir, no sir!"

Reason thirteen hundred why she loved Neville: he let her be this goofy.

Staring at the marshmallow, she frowned. "Maybe if I put it on sidewise?" she said slowly.

Neville raised his own stick and gently tapped hers with it, threatening he'd start a stick duel if she didn't stop waving at him like that, but of course a stick duel would be fun, so there was still a grin on his face. He listened to her speech with wide eyes, pretending to be completely in shock by what she was saying. "Oye, just what do you take me for? Neville Longbottom, notorious for holding sweet grudges. Rubbish, I say. Neville Longbottom is notorious for sharing his marshmallows." He nodded eagerly.

He turned his attention back to the end of her stick and studied it for a moment. "Try sideways, yes. And stick it right into the middle of the flame, not just gracing the top of it."

Ginny giggled, smacking her stick against his lightly. His advice was sound--and she would try it--but she felt like she had to avenge her honour here. "Were you a swashbuckler in your former life?" she asked him, arching her eyebrow. "Did you pillage innocent and helpless villages of their sweets and their ponies? Did you ride away on said ponies with said sweets, waving your sword, tossing marshmallows behind you as a talisman?" she said knowingly. "Rubbish indeed, good sir!"

Neville didn't know why he had been talking about himself in the third person, but it was amusing him nevertheless. He always got into this state of mind when he was with Ginny, the kind where he knew it was okay to be himself, and that he didn't have to worry about making himself look like a giant dolt. It was gold to be so silly at times, he knew that.

"I even wore an eye patch. And a neatly crafted black hat, I threatened to steal the local tailor's kittens if he didn't make me this hat. Of course he immediately made a smashing one for me after that," he spoke, hitting her stick again.

"How dashing," she breathed, putting her hand in front of her mouth in surprise. "No wonder it makes you look so rakish. I would pay you five kittens for you to wear that eye patch again" She tapped both of his shoulders with her stick. "I hope you took the kittens anyway and then made the levitate in a dance--for your own amusement. Dance, kitties, dance!"

She flipped her hair over her shoulder and twirled her stick like a wand. Ginny always envied Luna, the ability to have such incredible fantasies all the time. She wiggled her eye brows, grinning at Neville. "I think, if I were a swashbuckler, I would want my name to be Ginevra the Vengeful Goat Girl, known for the herd of rabid killer goats that travel as my fighting force. There is something shifty about goats, I have always thought so."

"I was probably the most dashing one around," he responded, trying to sound immodest, though not succeeding too well. "I gave that eye patch away to a woman who was missing an eye. I figured she needed it more than I did. She was old and looked like she'd cast a curse on me if I was mean to her," he continued, getting more and more into this little fantasy of theirs.

He laughed at the thought of making the kittens dance. "Would you have a dancing kitten instead of a parrot on your shoulder, Ginerva the Vengeful Goat Girl? Maybe we could sail a ship together, and if anyone tried to steal our booty, we'd have to launch an attack," he continued, pausing for a second. "Is booty the right word?"

Ginny tried to stop laughing, but she couldn't. "Oh, Merlin, I don't know? But it sounds so dirty! You touch our booty, and we'll stick it back up your arse," she said, cracking up completely. "I think we'd make the worst pirates ever. Too busy making kittens dance and snickering over booties to remember what the point was. What was the point again?" she said, dissolving into laughter again. "Other than touching our own booty."

Now Neville was entirely confused. He couldn't remember the name of the treasure that pirates had! Maybe it was booty, or maybe he was going slightly mad, but Ginny's laugh was contagious and the whole thing made him start laughing again. Maybe it was mixing booty and kittens that did it for him, but he had turned twelve shades of red while laughing. "The point was...wanting...to steal people's...booty?" he got out, staring at her with a confused expression as he used his sleeve to swipe at the tears of laughter in his eyes. "I hope it's shiny booty."

Ginny nearly doubled over laughing, picturing people polishing bums and using it for currency. "Oi, oi, Nev," she gasped, rolling over onto her side and accidentally knocking a few marshmallows onto the fire. She stared and then redoubled her laughter, clutching a hand to her throat. "Oh, no, I 'Aftered' them!" she squeaked, her face turning pink from all of her laughing.

"Ginny! If you ever got a large...amount of booty, would you let me polish it?" he managed to get out, knowing well enough that the entire thing could have been taken out of context if some wandering ear was listening in. Thinking about how people often referred to certain activities as 'polishing their wand' just made him laugh even more, especially because they had placed polishing and booty together in one sentence. "Hey, that was my dinner! You've killed the poor marshmallows, Gin! They didn't even have a chance. The poor marshmallows. Ginerva the Marshmallow Melter."

At Neville's quite brilliant double entendre, Ginny's mouth dropped open, and her laughter became so hard, it turned silent as she rolled back and forth, clutching her stomach. "Neville," she managed in a squeak, "you know my booty is only fit to be polished by you."

She picked up an uncooked marshmallow and chucked it at him. "That's Marshmallow Maniac, I come and arson all over it all, I can't be contained!"

He was blushing himself into a coma, but that didn't stop him from laughing. His face was damn near exploding from all the heat, both from his reaction to his words and from the laughing. "I would hope so. It must be my eye patch, it does it for all the...ladies with the nice, shiny booty."

Neville was too late in realizing that there was a marshmallow coming his way, and he had opened his mouth and lifted his head in an attempt at catching it, but instead it bounced right off his forehead and fell to his lap. "Maniac. Maniac Melter." He grasped the marshmallow and tried to aim for Ginny's mouth as he tossed it back at her.

Ginny slapped at her legs, trying to sit up. "Oh, my stars, the eye patch," she wheezed between the heavy laughter. She felt like her stomach was about to rip right out of her body, but she couldn't stop laughing at the image of Neville with that eye patch, hitting on girls in every port with a wink with his good eye, kittens on his shoulder, and Ginny's booty close at hand.

She squealed as the marshmallow came flying back at her. "Cavorting with kittens!" she shot back. "Kitten calamity!"

Now Neville knew he was going to have to get himself a real eye patch and surprise Ginny with it, he just had to. There was probably a way he could make his own with a piece of parchment, but the only thing he could find at hand was one of his pillows. He grabbed the pillow and placed it in front of one of his eyes. It was so large that it was hanging off the side of his head quite a bit, but he acted like it was a good fit. "See? It is the pillow eye patch that gives me my charm."

He grinned at the squeal she gave and let his pillow eye patch fall from his face so he could throw it at her. "Take that, the wrath of my pillow eye patch!"

Ginny bounced, shaking with laughter, as she reached up to catch the pillow. She held it up and looked at him threateningly. "A true swashbuckler knows not to give his enemy a weapon--en garde!" she giggled, whapping him on the arm with the pillow.

"I thought we were sailing on the same boat. If you're my enemy, get off my boat!" he declared, gasping playfully at the smack to his arm before quickly digging for another pillow and whacking her in the shoulder with it. "Your pillow-fight techniques are nearly invisible! Show me something good!"

"Are you really asking the sister of Fred and George and Charlie to bring the pain home?" she said with a taunt. "Our days of being allied are over, I declare mutiny!" she said with as loud of a voice as she dared at this late hour, giving him a firm whack on the arm, her eyes widening in delight, just like when she was little and the whole Weasley clan of kids burst into a pillow fight that was vicious and loving all at once.

"We'll have to see if Fred and George and Charlie taught their sister well, because from what I know, she's much too sweet to ever bring the pain home," Neville declared back bravely, sticking his chin out in an encouraging way. Once she hit him, he made a big show of grabbing for his arm and clutching it, as though she had a sword in hand and had just stabbed him. To gain revenge for the blow, he took his own pillow and bopped her on the top of the head now. "Oh yeah, I went there."

Ginny's eyes bugged out. Neville, with the cheap shot! "You sir, need to hang out with all of the kids I've hexed along the years," she laughed, whapping him on the leg. "Stroll over by Slytherin, they'll tell you Ginny's got the sweetness of a boiling pan of mandrake juice!" She hit him again on the other side, crying out, "Touche!"

"Oh, right, that's exactly what Malfoy and Friends would say," she said with a laugh, nailing him in the side. "Right before they collected for the wizard poor and then solved for world peace and hugged a Muggle-born."

She gasped. "Neville! So saucy! I love it. But I'm sorry, you are going down," she intoned, raising her pillow threateningly.

"Well, if you remember, I believe I was once called 'twelve of Malfoy' by our dear friend Harry. Maybe if I ask them again they will agree with him, maybe even bump it up to thirteen, then maybe world peace and Muggle-born hugging will be on the horizon," Neville responded, not believing his own words but finding the idea much too amusing to stop.

"I am not. I will never go down without putting up a good fight, at least! Give it all you've got, Gin-Gin." He tapped her pillow with his own, as though it were a shield.

"Make it twenty, and I'll raise you three Crabbes," Ginny offered, giggling as she had a mental image of Neville, giant tall and strong, crushing down a phalanx of Malfoys and his brainless, charmless underlings, knocking them all over with the ease of bowling pins.

Ginny shoved her pillow against his like a battering ram. "Ah, Nevvie, you have brought the reckoning down upon yourself!" she cried, trying not to surrender to another wave of laughter.
