Bingo: Waiting

A quiet, country life was about to be spiced up and it was almost impossible for Juliet to hide her excitement. A young man was scheduled to arrive at her family's farmhouse (any moment now) to help Juliet's father with the family farm for a few months. Juliet's father, Charlie, didn't provide any reason to the rest of the family as to why this man specifically was coming to help them despite their questioning him. It only found curious by the rest of the family when Boone told them he didn't have any farming experience.

No reason truly mattered to Juliet, though, because she only thirsted for a new face to see around the property. Being home schooled and not allowed to leave the farm left Juliet to only spend time with her father, mother, and older brother. Neither of the three really treated Juliet well and she tended to spend a lot of time by herself. Secretly, as she lounged in the sitting room with the rest of her family, she hoped he would share his company with her.

Juliet's eyes flicked around the room. Her mother sat straight as an arrow on one of the sofas while her brother was lying back in an armchair with his head hanging over the back. Charlie stood waiting at the front door, looking out the window next to the door, when they all tensed up a bit when he broke the silence. "They're here."

Juliet's eyebrows furrowed together when her father pluralized the arrival. She need not ask though when she remembered her father asked the neighbor to pick the man up from the airport; the family truck would've never made it in the city.

"Come, come," Charlie gestured to his family, "we must greet him properly."

Juliet's brother, Boone, let out a loud sigh as the three stood from their seats, Juliet the quickest. Standing behind Charlie, he pulled the door open just in time for the young man to be standing on the other side of it. "Welcome," Charlie greeted him. "I'm Charles Carter," he said before holding out his hand for him to shake.

"Thanks," he said after a short hesitation, "Grant."

"Yes, Grant," Charlie nodded, "you probably don't remember me - the last time I saw you you were still in diapers," he joked.

Grant didn't say anything back in response other than a forced half smile.

"Anyhow," Charlie went on, "how's your father doing?"

Grant raised an eyebrow, "he's fine."

"Right, good to hear," Charlie turned to his wife, "Grant this is my wife, Karen, you probably don't remember her either."

"My. It seems as though not just my own children grew up quickly," she said with a smile before shaking his hand softly.

Grant smiled back and let out an awkward chuckle.

"My son, Boone," Charlie continued on.

Boone held out his hand and grabbed tight onto Grant's. Boone, a grumpy old man hiding in his youth, sized Grant up fast. It was clear that Boone had been looking forward to competing with Grant over whatever situation presented itself in the upcoming months.

Charlie cleared his throat, "and uh, this is my daughter Juliet," Charlie almost mumbled.

"Pleasure to meet you," Juliet said with a bright smile before Charlie tugged Grant away and offered to show him around the house, farm, and the room off the side of the garage he'd be staying in. Grant agreed, glumly but shot a smile back at Juliet before following Charlie off into the house.

Juliet's face flushed into a shade of pink before she slipped away to her room.
