LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]containedchaos)

Who: Bert Blue and Gabe Barrette
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: Burnham City
What: Bert is working, Gabe buys flowers for his ill wife
Bingo: Organized Chaos

Bert Blue was an interesting sort of florist. She liked making the arrangements, but she couldn't do them without a cup of black coffee with two shots of Jack Daniels. She also had a hard time making the arrangements without chain smoking so she tended to break the rules about smoking inside buildings but only in the back room and she tried her best to blow the smoke out the small window near her table.

Her arrangements were the strangest ones in the store but also the ones that made the most money because they were in high demand. Flowers that were seemingly contradictory went together in her arrangements. Chaotic spurts of color, mixed greens, fiercely bright vases. Organized chaos. She never made the same arrangement twice.

She sat in her usual chair in the backroom, a cigarette hanging out of her mouth and her half empty cup of spiked coffee when the bell at the front door rang. She squished her cigarette against the windowsill and left it there. She knew there were a few good drags left and would not waste her tobacco. She strolled to the front of the store playing with the large black pendant hanging down to her chest. "Can I help you?" she asked the frazzled looking man staring wild eyed at floral arrangements behind glass cases.

Gabe turned to the smooth voice coming from the back of the store and was quite surprised seeing the pale, violently blue haired woman in leather tights. In his opinion she had a stunning face hiding under the strange appearance. "Uh… uh… I'm looking for some flowers… f…f… for my wife. I'm running late," he always stuttered through his words when he was in a rush.

She walked over to stand near him and look through the glass case at the flowers. As she stood close he caught the scent of flowers on her, the most overwhelming was lilac. He also smelled a hint of whiskey and coffee. Her many scents were mingling in the air between them as they stood looking at the flowers in silence. "What sort of woman is she?" Bert asked suddenly.

Gabe was caught off guard. "Sad," he said without thinking. "I mean…" he shook his head. "Spontaneous, fun, athletic, but still she likes to be treated like a princess every once in a while," before the accident. He shook his head.

Bert caught on that something was wrong, she didn't want to be nosey, but she did want to help this sad man find the perfect arrangement. Maybe it would help in some small way. She knew she looked unapproachable, but she loved to surprise people. "What's the occasion?" she asked trying to scope out what arrangement would be best.

"Hospital visit," he said quickly.

Bert looked at him. Like a PMHF hospital visit? She had seen his type before, and she sympathized with every single one of them. She pointed out three moderately sized and still very ornate designs which she had finished up that morning. "These are all pretty appropriate for the occasion, they are not too big but they still make a statement. They say that you care about her and you're not just some schmuck you ran out to the gas station and bought a dozen roses. Girls hate roses, especially spontaneous girls," she had seen the routine many, many times. The only time she thought it was okay for roses was when a guy bought one single rose. It was a romantic gesture but it wasn't the same as a thoughtless dozen red roses. How cliché. She didn't want this man to be cliché.

"I think I like this one," he said pointing to the second one that Bert had pointed out. It was mostly blue flowers with hints of purple, orange, and yellow. He liked how there were so many different shades of blue and so many different flowers. The arrangement reminded him vaguely of Evan and made him smile. She would love them. At least her former self would have.

Bert smiled. "That's my favorite," she said brightly. "I think you're wife will love it," she nodded, hoping that although blue and purple are traditionally thought of as dark colors, that this arrangement would brighten her up.

"It's really lovely," Gabe said quietly. "Did you make it?"

"Yes, just this morning. All of my arrangements are sold on the same day as they are made, I suppose that's why I still have a job here," she smiled and grabbed the keys from behind the counter (her boss honestly couldn't think that she could possibly keep the keys on her at all times… he knew what kind of wardrobe she choose) and got the arrangement for Gabe. As she rung him up she added a little card and some candies without adding them onto the final cost.

"Thank you for your help," Gabe said smiling genuinely. It was refreshing to know that people still had the ability to be thoughtful, even for strangers.

"You're welcome," she said smiling. "Good luck… I hope your wife gets better soon."

"Thank you," Gabe said, he looked into her strange blue eyes for a moment longer, smiled again, and then turned to leave the small shop.

Once the shop door was shut behind Gabe, Bert set to work in the back room, picking up her cigarette and finishing off the last of the arrangements for the day.
