Josh felt like he could fly. He didn't even feel guilty about skipping class. It's not like he had anybody but himself to answer to anyway. And what was one day?
And a day with this beautiful girl he thoroughly enjoyed the company of no less. The company he'd dreamed of really. He'd always like Melly. She was soft and sweet in a way that seemed to almost tame her flirty and bouncy nature. She was like a walking contradiction. A delightful one. And he was thrilled that she was ditching with him.
Josh ran a hand through his hair, the loose dark curls falling around his face. Lunch had been perfect. The greasy food and plastic seats were a great fun place to eat, and better than that, she didn't think he was a total loser. Melly actually seemed impressed and to enjoy the almost 1930s diner flashback, which really helped stem his nervousness. Josh liked finding these little hole in the wall places that had great food and no one really knew about. "What's next," he said playfully, putting his hands in his pockets and nudged his shoulder against her as they walked.
He smiled thinking about his brilliance. He wasn't sure if she would have anything in mind, but just in case she didn't he had looked up a perfect two or three hour escapade, with the help of one of his "uncles" in the middle of the night about a year ago. One thing could be said about his mom's boyfriends, they certainly had character. This "uncle" had taken Josh through a back entrance into a building outside Millennium Park in the middle of the night. They'd climbed up the the fifth floor, where all of the maintenance equipment was so there weren't any offices or office workers to see them. Against the back wall the fire escape ladder hovered just above the giant bean. They had climbed down the ladder and let go to slide down the bean into the square. It was one of his favorite memories. But Millennium Park was a walk from where they were, so Josh had looked up a fun way to get there. Apparently there was a little ferry that ran from River Park up the street down to the marina right outside the park. So Josh planned on taking the ferry down the river with a bag of feed for the fish trailing in its wake, then up to the fire escape to slide down the bean.
But he didn't want to tell Melly all of his secret plans.
"River Park is about a block away. There's a little ferry we can take from there down to the marina at the lake. Then I thought we could go to Millennium Park. I've got kind of a surprise set up, if you want to make today memorable I mean." He was surprised at his quiet confidence since he was normally so nervous around girls, but everything seemed to be working out so he was excited. Though he was occasionally telling himself to calm down and just act cool.
This was going to be one ditch day neither of them would forget, so long as they didn't get arrested, he thought.
