Josh was completely taken aback at the intensity of Chelle's kiss. His eyes opened as she pushed the kiss further, deeper, hotter. This was weird. He didn't want to pull away and embarrass her or be awkward, but this was not what he expected or wanted at all. Josh didn't mind fooling around, but he did not like things getting hot and heavy or serious without having feelings for someone. But it was her birthday. So he let it go on, more than he liked, and he was pretty sure his lip was bleeding, but he didn't really return her kiss as much as he let her kiss him.
