The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Iris was seriously nervous. No matter how much time she spent in front of her mirror, the dress felt awkward and like the back of it stuck out for half a mile. This was going to be fine, it was going to be good. She let out a soft sigh before grabbing her mask and heading out the door and down to the Great Hall, the rose she received in the post grasped in her hand.

She was worried that this was some sort of joke, that when she got down the stairs someone would be standing there, waiting to laugh at her for being foolish enough to believe that anyone would want to ask her to the dance and--oh there was...there was a bloke with a flower and--Iris stopped mid-step, stuck halfway down the staircase and unable to move herself any further.

Brad was counting back from one hundred in Greek (not the language he was planning on picking for his training, but he thought it couldn't hurt to learn some bits of other languages) to keep himself calm. Things with Emmeline had not ended well, and neither had they with Betty, but that was no reason not to be wary or stupid about this. Iris was a perfectly lovely girl and they got on nicely. There was the little, bitty, inconvenient fact that she was the daughter of the Head Auror. Who happened to be quite his superior, but Brad was definitely not thinking about that tonight.

He'd planned on just asking Iris to the ball, but doing this secret admirer thing was kind of romantic, he thought, but he hadn't planned much beyond that. Brad knew he was interested in her, but wasn't sure how interested in dating an auror she would be. But they could have fun and pretend, if she happened to not be. That's what Halloween was about, right? Dressing up and pretending to be someone you were not. Except, that's not really what the traditions were, but Brad couldn't follow that train of thought because he'd spied Iris on the staircase and nearly lost his footing. She was absolutely gorgeous. He stared at her for a long moment before realizing that he needed to actually greet her.

Now, he would've picked a full mask, or at least a half one if he'd wanted to conceal his identity for the night, and maybe add in a voice manipulating spell, but Brad sort of wanted her to know it was him. He climbed the few steps to reach her and smiled at her. "You look...wonderful."

She blushed at the compliment, instantly recognizing his voice. "Thank you," she said softly, looking up to catch his gaze. "You don't think it's too much?" she asked, a smile slowly breaking out onto her face, ruffling the dress up a bit.

So. So it was Brad that had asked her? And this wasn't a joke or anything and--she could feel the knots in her stomach going away. Things were going to be just fine. She was still nervous, no doubt about that, but it wasn't the same as before. She didn't know if she should have them make the first move towards the Hall or if she should let him lead them that way or--well, she would just wait. That was the right way to do it.

Brad shook his head, "N-no it looks really great. Lots of ruffles but its, very nice." Well, at least he wasn't babbling, right? Brad held out the flower for her to take and then offered his elbow, "May I escort you into the Hall?" he asked politely, a smile on his face.

Right, don't trip down the stairs, don't make her trip, don't spill anything on her clothes, Brad told himself mentally. He wasn't going to ruin this being clumsy - even auror training hadn't taken all of his random tripping and awkwardness away, but if he focused really hard, then he wouldn't trip, right? "Um, hi. How are you?"

Having left Delana after they got their drinks and mingled amongst each other for a bit, Rosamund headed off with a smile in search of something else; she was restless. She felt like dancing, almost, but she decided against that as the dance floor looked pretty crowded to begin with. Adjusting her mask so that it fit better on her face, she walked amongst the crowd slowly, until she found a a place to stand that wasn't in the way of others, who seemed to be drunk and having a grand ol' time.

She smiled softly to herself, sipped her punch and looked around, wondering where her date, of sorts, got to. Hopefully she hadn't bored or scared him off already!
