A look of skepticism crossed Derek's face. "You despise and want to slap me halfway to next Wednesday because I pull your braids?"
Was that really it? Was the whole reason their conversations were usually terminated (rather than simply "ended") because she was annoyed that he seemed to be acting like a child?
That was... a relief? No. Not even close. Puzzling? Yes. Yes, it was.
"Then walk away," he said, with a little helpless shrug. "If you can't stand me, and if I antagonize you so badly, then just... walk away."
Well, really, what else could he do? He wasn't conscious enough of the problem (him, apparently) to prevent it from surfacing, she wasn't willing to give him an inch that didn't result in physical violence, so... what, in terms of conflict-resolution, could he do?
