His year had definitely turned out differently than he could have ever imagined. That he'd ever tried to imagine. Berkeley, as it was quite easy to figure out, liked to figure things out in the moment. He had fancied the idea of waking up next to Amelia Bones for the rest of his life, so proposing marriage was absolutely what he wanted. It just made sense--he'd thought like this forever, being the eldest of three brothers made you jump for what you wanted, no matter the black eye you were going to receive. Okay, so maybe Elphias still hadn't figured that out, but at least it led to many interesting occurrences in the Doge household.
Berk hadn't thought he'd be married, he really hadn't thought he'd have a child--a daughter, and he couldn't imagine that Mycroft would have shared vows with a woman he didn't know, or that his littlest brother would almost die from an unknown disease and then disappear off the face of the planet. And then---Berk hadn't expected any of this at the beginning of last year, or--well, a few months before, when he and Amelia began seeing each other.
So---he really had been expecting surprises for this new year, but good things, all he'd experienced were good things and---having to tell Amelia that her parents had been murdered (details dragged out of him because---in cold blood, it was horrendous-) before they'd even rung in 1980 was the absolute last way he thought he'd start out the decade.
Berkeley didn't know what to do about anything, he'd comforted people before, but he'd never had to deal with the guilt that was consuming his wife. How---how could he even try to deny that her involvement in the war hadn't been a factor? A wizengamot member that spoke out openly against Voldemort, married to an auror, a woman who associated with the most vocal protestors of this war---Berk couldn't lie to himself, and he couldn't lie to Amelia. This all was a load of shit, and while he wanted to ship Amelia, Mara, and himself off to Tahiti, he knew that they couldn't do that.
Plopping down onto the couch, on the side of Amelia that Mara was facing, Berkeley tapped the tip of his daughter's nose before repeating the same action with Amelia. "I think you should at least have some cake," he said softly, "It's illegal to not have cake on your birthday."
