Order Men
How could this have happened?

James paced back and forth in the living room of the Order House, having been banned from helping the rescue party because he couldn't remain calm. Damn bloody right he couldn't remain calm! Only Frank and Alice---and Dumbledore, he knew, only they knew about the prophecy. So they did not have any idea of what was going through James' head. What was Voldemort doing, not having people kill Lily on the spot? Or had they killed her, and taken her and---James clenched his fists tightly, wishing to wring the neck of the death eaters that had dared invade their home. They had seen maybe one neighbor, always entering the house through the floo, so how anyone knew their location was highly suspicious.

They had only told a handful of people.

He didn't like the paranoia that was growing with his anger, but James couldn't stop his thoughts. How had they found out? Who had slipped and revealed their location? The Longbottoms were keeping a very low profile too, they were definitely in a more public place than they were, so---if they had been after Alice (like she had hysterically explained) they why didn't they attack them at the Ministry? Or at Alice's parents? It didn't make any sense to James, and he had the boiling, intensely strong gut-feeling that they had been waiting to hit two birds with one stone.

James kicked out at the thought, making the side table and the variety of knick-knacks on top of it rattle. Nothing fell, and James struck his hand out and sent the lamp soaring to the ground with a very satisfying crack. He whirled around--what else would be ridiculously good to smash?

Gideon had a map spread out on his lap and was half-concentrating on the scrying crystal that he was using to find Lily's location - of course they had a bigger map and crystal working on it in the other room, but it couldn't hurt to go back over the places they had just done, just in case they were sloppy (perhaps, there was always a chance of a mistake on someone's part) and Lily got out.

He didn't want to say anything, because he could understand James's feelings. Not completely, but out of anyone in that room, he should know how it worked, right? Except there was definitely nothing anyone could say to James about this to make him feel better. There was no better, until Lily and the baby were back, safe, in his arms again.

Looking around the room, Gideon took note of who was there. Not everyone, because there were some out on the rescue party, but, he couldn't help but see one glaring absence. "Where's Remus?"

"I don't fucking care where Remus is," James stopped in his mini tantrum to stare dumbly over at Gideon, who was being as equally useless as his missing friend. James had barely noticed the people who were there, let alone Remus, who was always disappearing and holing himself up. Probably managed to lock the damn patronus out of his house, the bloody wanker.

James shook his head in annoyance and turned away again, swiftly kicking a stool away and into a bookshelf, sending the texts tumbling to the ground. He had all this energy, all this adrenaline rushing through him, and wasn't allowed to do a damn thing with it. The second he tried to force his way into the mission, he was pushed away or shoved aside; all worked ceased until he stepped away. Fucking bullshit.

"What are you doing next!" he let out, spinning around once again. He could be bloody nosy, that wasn't putting himself in the line of danger.

Gideon sat there easily, only intending on interfering with the destruction if it turned to out of control flames. In his book, James had every right to burn the damn house down - this was the Order's fault, but there wasn't anything any of them could do about it until Lily was found. He refrained from making a wiseass comment about scrying the phonebook next, because that was about as helpful as this was. But there was a possibility, so Gideon was going to try it.

"Next? Well, there's always going back there, to check residual spells, but that's Alice's big deal. Sturgis could probably do it, he's got some of the training, but I'm not sure it's quite safe." Gideon squinted at the map, hoping he'd caught a glimpse of something but no, it was just a small tear in the map fold. "We could suss out some of the usual suspects, but I think we need a bit of help. I mean, they know who we are, whoever has her...them, knows we're coming. We could see if some of our friends know anything."

Sturgis strode into the room with a grim frown on his face. He'd returned from an inspection of the Potter home and the report was not a good one. The destruction was massive. Spells had been cast from several different origins and it was difficult to tell exactly how many dark wizards had come for Lily -- possibly Alice, too. He still needed to talk with Frank. But now, he had to tell James the bad news.

He was taken aback by the appearance of the room but it was not for the remnants of an apparent tantrum from James. Sturgis was astonished to see Gideon Prewett of all people. The ginger man's impassive attitude caused an immediate rise within the hitwizard but Sturgis knew this was not the time to be reaming out Gideon for being so unconcerned with the death of his own wife.

A book soared across the room and skidded over the floor. Sturgis turned his flinty gaze on the Lily's tantrum-pitching husband. "Kicking things isn't going to bring her back, James," he told the other wizard. Sturgis meant for his tone to be compassionate but the renewed grief for Gleny had put an edge in his voice.

James wondered, briefly, when any one in the Order besides Lily herself, actually began to think that they could restrain him and his emotions. Sirius hadn't been able to for years, Remus and Peter had never had the skill, and the only others? They were either dead or kidnapped right at this moment. James considered the rest of the Order friends, family even, but at the end of the day only Lily was allowed to give James any sort of---reprimand? Was that it? He did not care what Sturgis thought, James fucking knew that breaking things wasn't going to help, but nothing and no one else was doing a damn thing either.

"And what are you doing, Podmore?" James shot back quickly, "What good have you done? Is Lily here right now? No? Didn't fucking think so." He'd come close, hand up threateningly and his other gripped tightly onto his wand. He heard the clinking of Gideon's ridiculous crystals and with a quick snap of his wand, a needle thin hex shot out and cracked the crystal until it fell to the map in pieces.

James stepped back arms out, "What are any of you doing? What are---we bloody----we're a fucking disgrace!" His hands slammed down to his side as he glared hard down at the floor. "All the fuck we've managed to do is kill people, and we get up the next day like it's all going to get better when it's fucking not."

He couldn't help his stare as it turned to Gideon, unsure of how the man was still able to breathe with his family being murdered, but the thought resonated through James' head. What the hell was the Order doing, now? They all were bloody useless.

Gideon had been bracing himself a little for James's outburst - that was certainly not the smartest thing to say. As far as he was concerned, James had every right to flip out and no one should even try and contain him right now. He would either exhaust himself or come up with a good idea. His crystals snapping in half almost amused Gideon, but it gave him the out to drop the act of pretending that what he was doing worked.

He wanted nothing more than to help James find Lily but he was at a loss for what to actually do except. Gideon met James' eyes (feeling a touch guilty that he and Gleny hadn't let anyone know she and Tristan were alive yet, but that was Gleny's call and he was just going to work on protecting them when she decided that it was time) and he shrugged. "I feel pretty damn useless right now yeah. But, if they can come into our homes and attack us and, kill our families, well. Turnabout's fair play? We could attack them where it hurts, their money and influence."

Gideon ignored Sturgis for now, because he knew the man had other loyalties, to the ministry and what not, but he didn't. "We've got the ministry for now, but they still think they own us. Only they know we won't kill anyone who's not a Death Eater, but we could. We could frame some?" None of this talk was helpful for now, for finding Lily, Gideon knew that. But he was just trying to help. "I don't know. Trying to play fair in war is just killing us, I...don't know."

The hysterical volley of angry shouting and gesturing from James came as no surprise. Sturgis knew the other wizard could become volatile when rattled. He'd seen James go spare over Sirius's disappearance. So, his reaction to Lily's capture was guaranteed to be a tad...radical. Which is why James was here, in the Order house and not out there with Ben and the others where he'd be a liability.

Sturgis could weather the theatrics of a distraught husband. He was accustomed to bad reactions to bad news. What he could not let idly pass, however, was the ridiculous commentary of an ally too ignorant to realize the severe connotations and repercussions of his outlandish words: to become what they fought. These were not suggestions an Order member should ever be making, let alone to an agitated wizard with a wand.

Already encumbered with enough hardship, angst, and duty to crush a lesser man, Sturgis felt his resolve begin to break. "Shut up!" he snapped loudly over the two men, glancing sternly between the two. "Would you like a site report?" he prompted James. "Or would you like to hear more mongering of senseless violence? Flip a coin, if you must."
