Why was he not surprised by how she responded to his observation? He let out a sigh of his own as she said what he knew she was thinking; ‘you worry me’. He always had, for some reason or another. She always seemed to think he was up to something, or that something was up with him…and while she was usually right, he never let her in on anything. He never wanted her to worry any more than she already did, and he never wanted to see that look of disappointment on her face whenever she knew he had done something wrong. He didn’t know what it was, but those big brown eyes of hers had an effect on him that even he couldn’t explain. Mackenzie was just…pure, and it was one of the things he admired about her and usually loathed about everyone else. Anyone who was that good usually got on his nerves, but she was his vice. She was his weakness; or she was one on a very short list, at least.
Her observation made his brow quirk upwards ever so slightly. Was it really that obvious that something was up? He was usually pretty good about keeping his emotions at bay, something that bothered his female housemates to no end (well…females in general), but there were definitely times when that wall that was up around him cracked and crumbled, exposing the fact that he really was just a man, and not some cold and heartless thing. Different people saw him as different things, and he had never been able to truly understand what Mackenzie saw him as. She was different than anyone he had ever associated himself with, so he could only imagine the things she saw in him. Sometimes it worried him…but at other times, it was refreshing to feel human for a while, even though that was what usually got him into the most amount of trouble.
“I just have a lot on my mind.” It wasn’t exactly a lie…but it was too vague to be of any use to her. Before she had a chance to ask him to go further into detail about everything, he continued on. “You could try and get me to delve further into that topic of conversation, but we both know what the outcome of that situation would be. I came here to talk to you, but some things are just…better left unsaid.” Whether it was for his sake or her sake, it didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to talk about what was really eating away at him, no matter how hard she pushed.
