It was the worst imaginable thing and the least thing that had been on Nate's mind. After the first wave of children were kidnapped, Nate had the wards on his house tightened - they were a prime couple, after all, if the DMLE was right and the Death Eaters were targeting Muggleborn and pureblood marriages. But Bree wasn't a pureblood, even if she had a history with the Mulcibers. With the wards and the extra security, they should have been safe. They were safe.

Except they weren't. Nate looked over at Bree, who was being interviewed by Frank Longbottom and Nate wanted nothing more to go over there and console her, but he was currently being 'briefed' by Moody. Only Nate wasn't listening, there was nothing to listen to. He had been tricked, of course. A 'fake' alarm and call to duty - everyone was on duty these days, even though Nate had a primarily desk and training job. With so many aurors taken off this case because it was their child involved; and now Nate was too. He wasn't listening to the words Moody was saying, he couldn't listen when his wife was so distraught. Nate knew that was what Moody was saying. With a nod and without waiting to be dismissed, Nate crossed the living room quickly and wrapped Bree in a tight hug, effectively cutting Longbottom off mid-sentence.

The investigating crew, feeling for one of their own, took the cue and moved about them quietly, not wanting to interrupt the preoccupied couple. Nate was pretty sure what they would find - the wards had been ripped open (Nate had felt this on the call-out and realized the diversion) and his wife had been roughed up and knocked unconscious and their children were missing. Their children were missing.

Nate hugged Bree tighter at that thought, unable to speak or say anything.

He couldn't hold her tight enough. She was still breathing, he wasn't holding her hard enough. Bree stared at the wall as she silently willed Nate to suffocate her and to end this terrible misery. Her chest felt like it had been excavated and she was just a sack of bones---the idea that her children were gone and most likely dead, it---

"They knew exactly where to go," Bree muttered, not moving in Nate's grip. She almost enjoyed the feeling of her aching ribs because it meant that she wasn't completely lost, and she deserved to be in pain because she didn't do a damn thing.

She should have been able to protect Scott and Emily. Everything had happened so fast. Emily had begun to cry, and in the second Bree had stepped out into the hallway the spells had been shot. She hadn't brought her wand out, what would she have needed it for if she was simply getting up to check on her daughter? She had watched the death eaters race down the stairs with her children in their arms, unable to do anything because she was rapidly falling into unconsciousness. Bree would have rather been tortured; she woke up screaming for Scott and Emily, her mind having been wracked with nightmares.

Bree felt hot tears sting her eyes as her jaw tightened. She needed to talk to her brother, but right now she couldn't do a damn thing but stand there in Nate's arms.

That thought had occurred to Nate, that someone had been in their house before, had known exactly where to go and what they would do. Either they had been here or had observation on them; something, it had to be something like that because there was no way they would get that information form any of them, the bedtime routine, that was just too personal for them to know. Nate nodded and smoothed down the hair on the back of her hair, trying to be as soothing as possible, despite the air of panic and terror that was clutching his chest.

"They're checking everything, I told them to look for anything, any spying charms or anything," Nate said quietly, "Moody, he's going to fix this." Nate wished this didn't sound as hollow as it felt. Nate wanted to yell and tear and kill to find his children, but there was, nothing. "You didn't, it's not your fault. I shouldn't have left."

Bree pulled back slightly to run her hand over her face. None of this made any sense, her children hadn't done anything. Why--Bree wasn't dumb, she knew it was because of Nate's high status as a muggleborn auror (it had to be, Auror Booth's son was taken, too--), but...what fault did Scott and Emily have to that? It was not being able to understand why they thought punishing completely innocent children was beneficial. And--of course, her Slytherin mind was easy to point out that it was hitting the enemy where they were weakest. If the ministry didn't get these children back, the public would surely turn against them, hell, Bree didn't know if she could even trust her husband after--

No. It wasn't Nate's fault. She had to stop being angry and start trying to help. Putting the blame on anyone was not going to bring her children back, all it was going to do was make the wait for their return harder to do.

"It's not your fault," she repeated, looking up at her husband. Bree squashed the green and silver little monster in the back of her head that was screaming yes it is, because her heart knew better. Bree lifted her hand to lightly touch Nate's chin, "We're going to find them."

She wasn't sure why it felt so urgent to reassure Nate, but let herself believe it was more for him than it was herself.
