nothing?
Had the Ministry lost that much credibility with the rest of the Wizarding World? Maybe he was deluding himself. There had never been much faith in the Ministry. It was so difficult when you knew far more than the population could safety know. Yes, the children of the men and women that he worked with were extremely important ... but did that give him the right to sacrifice the lives of this near-foreign 'Order of the Phoenix'? He had his suspicions about the origins of the group, about the patterns of attacks that had happened recently ... but nothing concrete.
If there was anything concrete, the Death Eaters wouldn't need his confirmation on anything. The damage the Vanishing Cabinets
alone could cause ... it was too big a risk to make for everyone.
People could hate him all they wanted.
The phone rang - yes, he'd had a
phone installed in the Ministry's office, if only because so few 'purists' would go near them that he felt more secure using the lines. It had been hell to get the wiring in, but he
was a wizard, after all (and Avis had given him a hand with it).
On the other end of the line was a gruff voice, thick with accent and difficult to understand.
Ugh, Americans. If he hadn't been desperate (and because they had come ... recommended) he wouldn't have called them, but it was important to bring people from outside to get this resolved as quickly as possible. Fresh eyes and unbiased ears, something like that. Avis had always told him that a scientific approach was the best way to go about things, after all.
"Yes, I understand. I look forward to our future partnership. I'll be signing the agreement when it arrives."
Or after the children were recovered, but he assumed the Americans would figure that out themselves.
He walked into the front of his office and nodded to Mr. Riddock. "Send out an order to Aurors with children missing. The location has been confirmed by two separate teams and we're ready to move in."
Corner double-checked his pockets for his wand and a few other non-lethal powders he'd pinched from his desk and headed out into the hall toward the designated meeting area for Aurors. He felt it was the least he could do to head in first, but he'd wait for the rest of the team to gather before apparating out.
