Magpie Team Meeting of Doom

Seth was laying out on the grass of the pitch staring up at the sky, while he waited for everyone else to show up.  He had tried sitting in the team room but just ended up pacing back and forth and stressing himself out even more.  So he came out to the pitch where he was always more relaxed.

He ran his hands over his face as he tried to get his thoughts together.  Maybe Odette was right in thinking that this was all a bad idea.  But he had to at least try.  All he had to do was present his case, ask for a vote and let the chips fall as they may.  If they all wanted to keep Drystan as captain, then fine, he wouldn't bring it up again.  This was only because he had originally intended it to be a temporary step down, so it should all be settled before the new season.  And give him some credit, it wasn't like he didn't already know how this was going to turn out, it would just be better if it was official.

"Oh hey"  Seth blinked looking up as a shadow was cast over his face.  "Anyone else here yet?"

She blinked down at Seth from behind her sunglasses. Maggie felt like she hadn't been anywhere but the hospital and her flat in years, so being out in the open sun, on the Magpie's pitch no less, was a strange feeling. She used to be able to come out here to escape, but now felt like this was the last place on earth that she wanted to be.

"I think they're lurking in the tunnel," she said, perching herself on the bench behind Seth. Maggie flipped open her journal, hoping for some sort of update from her brother, who was currently at the hospital with Josef. Her family had really come through for her in this time of crisis, and while Maggie really didn't feel like a mother just yet, she knew it was important for her baby to have all the support he could get.

Nothing. With a sigh, Maggie shut her book and looked out across the pitch, spotting the lingering members of their team.

No matter what she knew going into this meeting, Odette was going to stay as positive and controlled as possible. It would unfortunately be difficult (or maybe not... maybe no one would take Seth seriously and Drystan would take over quickly to begin for the upcoming year), but practice in private was necessary for 'the new Odette" before showing the public. Besides, if she could keep pleasant with the rest of the team, then everything else would easily.

Keeping that in mind, Odette kept her head clear as she walked out onto the pitch. Seth had begged her not to say a word about his intentions. Not that she was particularly keen on giving anyone a heads up anyway. Somehow, she didn't think letting anyone know that Seth had confined in her was the best of ideas at the moment. Speaking of Seth--- she sent a quick nod his way as she walked by him, choosing to sit next to Maggie instead.

Odette had legitimately not seen Maggie in weeks. Weeks! It felt strange seeing her now, and suddenly she wished she had told her about what Seth wanted to bring up; this was definitely not as important as your child in the hospital. Leaning over to her friend, she let out a quiet sigh before speaking. "So if this lasts for too long or gets ridiculous, we'll leave on the premise of postpartum attachment, right?"

He might have been leaving the Montrose Magpies for the upcoming season, but Drystan was still captain until he'd turned his robes in. There was a slight prickly feeling he still had at being suggested to call a team meeting in order. The only time he'd ever been unfair to Seth, he thought, was when he'd threatened to oust him from the captain position—if Seth had something important to say, there was no reason why it couldn't go through Drystan first. However, he had reasons of his own to call a meeting, so he saved his contemptuous look for later.

Walking to meet the slowly forming group, he gave a brisk nod in greeting to everyone present, and stood toward the back, observing with a keen eye.

Seth suggested the meeting be call because he felt that it was only fair to have this done in a public forum with everyone present, no different than when Drystan called him out in journals pretty much sparking a mutiny. Except Seth really had nothing negative to say and highly doubted that was how things were going to turn out today.

"I know everyone is busy so I'll keep it short." Seth started once everyone had arrived. "Last season when I stepped down it was with the intention of coming back this season, just temporary, nothing official. I still want that but things have been running smoother." he admitted glancing over to Dystan then back to everyone else. "I want my job back back but not if its going to cause more strife to the team. So basically I wanted this meeting to put it to a vote. Officially make Drystan Captain until he doesn't want anymore and I won't bring up again, or give me a second chance. I have a feeling how its all going to turn out but, I just felt it would be better to to this on the up and up and not through journals or what not."

This seemed like a perfect opening if ever he head heard one. It was now or never. "If I may," Drystan interjected upon hearing Seth's proposition, "I have reasons of my own for wanting this meeting to be called."

Checking to make sure he the group was attentive, he continued on with the briefest of pauses. "I will be stepping down as captain, as this past season," Drystan began, "was my last with the Montrose Magpies. I have been traded to Puddlemere United, and I find this an acceptable move."

"Well, there goes that," Maggie let out, slumping back against the bench and crossing her arms.

She tried not to show how hurt she was by the news as---people were traded all the time, players moved and it happened, but with everything that had been going on with the team, with her and---maybe what she was feeling was guilt. She had been part of the last major Magpie controversy, and there was no doubt that Drystan didn't appreciate being part of her mess, no matter how good he'd been about it. He was one of the few people she trusted in life and now! Gone. Brilliant.

She held back a glare, and a pout, wondering how long she was actually going to be out of commission when it came to quidditch. Right now it felt like a good idea to take as much time as she needed to recuperate.

"Glad the bloody Tattler didn't tell us first," she muttered, looking toward Drake as she tried to find a bright spot in all this mess. Maggie wouldn't even acknowledge Seth at this point, she didn't need to see his smug expression.

Going to a meeting that Seth called gave Drake a sour feeling in his stomach, and of course, this had to happen now. Drake nodded, meeting Maggie's look as he agreed, better than the tattler. Two recently pregnant players, a fairweather captain that was leaving them and an insane, power hungry transfer.

Drake gave Drystan a heated glare and shook his head. He could understand the move, he felt the need to get out of this sinking ship, but to move to United? That stung, a lot.

"Seth, you're not ready to be captain of us. You were traded to us with the nice cushy job handed to you. You did nothing to prove yourselves to us, to endear yourself to the cohesion of the team. This is a job, and you were supposed to be a leader, and you backed off when things got crazy. Call me old fashioned, but I think you need to prove yourself before you can just ask for your job back," Drake said calmly. "Drystan, good luck to you, may you suffer in second place always," he added with a mean smirk. Loyalty meant a lot to Drake and although it was a job and he had to do what he had to do, it definitely stung.

"I say we finish preseason, we've got a little less than a month, and see where we're at then. We don't need to rush into a captain decision, we've seen how it works when forced on us," Drake waved at Seth and crossed his arms back over his chest. "So, lets just see."

Well fuck that. Odette had been perfectly prepared to deal with whatever issue Seth would bring up by announcing his volley for the captaincy again. It had been expected, she had already gone through her aggravated stage concerning it, leaving her ready to think openly and logically. But this--- this-- there was no way she was going to stay calm and polite now. Her blood boiled immediately at Drystan's words, and she shot up from her seat, unsure whether she felt angry or hurt.

"What!" Odette snapped, her eyes widening as she fixed them on Drystan. Dealing with Seth's proclamation was quickly thrown to the wayside (he knew how she felt about all of it anyway). When did this--- how did this--- this wasn't something that happened overnight! It was-- it was-- Drystan had been lying to them, lying to her! It was a selfish thought, but she was angry--- more importantly how could he do this to her? They were--- they were--- he was the godfather of her bloody daughter for fuck's sake, and he couldn't even muster to bring up the fact that he might be leaving this entire time?

"Excuse me, you find it what?" she spat venomously, her fingers now curling to create two claws. And now, where did that leave them? With no captain and a previous one wanting nothing more than to snatch up the spot? With two weeks before the season started? Two fucking weeks! What was he thinking--- trading was--- of course part of the game but this wasn't--- this was a slap in the face, not an amicable parting of ways. This was abandoning them.

"How fucking noble of you Drystan," she hissed, raising her chin up high. Yes, the Magpies were on the downs, but it hadn't always been like that. Drystan knew, he had been here before Seth had shown up-- regardless of the past shitty year, they were still the most successful team in history.

Seth just stared in complete shock. What the fuck just happened? No, really, Seth did not believe the words coming out of Drystan's mouth. He didn't even imagine that this was a possible out come at all. Now everyone was going to be pissy because he was leaving, which Seth really didn't blame him at all, it was a career move, he had done the same, but he could already tell that they were thinking that he was just going to step in and usurp the captaincy. Which he wasn't. He didn't want to be captain unless he had the team's support. There was no way he was going back to what it was like when he first came to the Magpies.

Which everyone had seem to have forgotten. Seth bit back a snarky remark when Drake started up. It would do no good to point out that he didn't back off when things got crazy, the team pretty turn there backs on him and said that they wanted Drystan to take over. It would also do no good to remind them that he never had their support from the beginning way before things went down hill and everyone took a side on his and Odette's personal feud. And it was an out right blatant lie that he did nothing to prove himself to the team. But of course no one remembers Odette pushing him off his broom during practice or anything else like that. Only his faults. If they wanted him to take all the blame for their drama, fine. He could man up and do just that. He was done with playing petty games.

"United's a good team. You'll get on well with them." Seth said sincerely. "But this really doesn't change anything. I'm not taking the Captaincy unless I'm supported in it. I know I have my faults and handled a lot of things badly and that, yea I did cause a lot of drama, but I wasn't alone in that. I'm trying here and that's pretty much all I can do at this point. So I perfectly fine with waiting."
