Orpheus resisted the somewhat primal urge to curl his lip and growl at her. Instead he substituted it with a glare. "I'd be glad to trade if that's what you had in mind. Otherwise, no, I'm keeping my job," he continued stubbornly. Maybe his job sucked but she had no right to make fun of him for it. It was quite respectable, Anthony had assured him. Not to mention he'd just been recently promoted, not like that was any of her business.

"I don't have any intention of you being the breadwinner either. I have more than enough of an income to support myself as well as my wife to be, if that's what you're insinuating. I can certainly uphold the lifestyle you're used to." She was insulting his pride, his family's honor, his downright manliness. She needn't have been cruel about it, he had been willing to laugh at himself.

"While my job might not be as glamorous as yours, without me you would have to file all that paperwork yourself and you wouldn't get half as much accomplished in a day," he spat, not entirely without venom but not as maliciously as it could have been delivered.

Orpheus took the last bit of ice left in his glass into his mouth and moved away from the wall, placing his cup on the bar. "If you've finished making a mockery of my occupation, I believe dinner is ready." He offered his arm to her but his eyes were just a bit cold and no longer laughing.
