Emmeline turned toward his voice and shook her head at his first question. “No news.”
It would be remarkable if it wasn’t so terribly tragic. There had been people returned from the kidnappings, Dedalus, thank god---but Derek’s cousin had been murdered, and none of the Order members or their significant others had been found---no, that was wrong. Healer Jordan’s wife had been found, but the man had been in such a foul mood the entire time that Emmeline hadn’t dared go near him. Mackenzie was still missing. Mackenzie! One of her friends, one of Caradoc’s best---
Emmeline hadn’t felt her self cross the room at her thoughts, and she gently pressed herself to Caradoc’s chest as she let out a breath, her arms wrapping around his waist. Maybe they could make this house their own personal refuge--what Amsterdam had been for those few splendid weeks. The moment they’d come back all hell had broken loose, so it did feel like they’d brought on the trauma. Emmeline couldn’t help the guilt she was immersed in; why did something terrible have to happen to make her life even and balanced after receiving the greatest gift imaginable? It was as if she wasn’t allowed to simply be happy with happy Caradoc back in her life, she had to deal with the tremendous guilt that her friends and family might not be as lucky to get their loved ones back.
Her cheek pressed against his chest as she gave the room a look. So many memories; not many of them good, but this had been her sanctuary for many years, locked away from her parents’ incessant annoyances. “Yes. Though it’s not very impressive, anymore.”
