[Bianca!]
He'd been staying at Bianca's place for some time now. This means a few things: chiefly, that he's remembered how to perfect his one-handed diaper change, but also that he's been, well. Spending all his time with Bianca. And they hadn't been fighting like they had been before he'd decided to smarten up, so that was something.

In fact, when Bianca went to work and he found himself going to sleep alone, it felt strange. There had been a time when Bertram would've told anyone within shouting distance that having the bed all to yourself in the middle of the night when you just needed to let a good, smelly one go was one of the best things in the world.

Now, though...well.

He picked up the newly-delivered cartons of food from in front of the floo and walked into the living room to drop down on the sofa.

"Is Aaron still asleep?" He fished the plastic forks out of the bag and started to open up the container with the spring rolls, smiling sideways.

"He's sleeping loads better than Amissa did so far. Maybe it's because he's got a better mother."

Bianca sent Bertram a look, because while she knew all about Amissa's early years, she didn't want to develop that sort of attitude toward a woman who was going to be in her life for....well, the rest of her life. Aaron was Amissa's half-brother, and that meant that the two were going to be involved with each other's lives, and therefore Bianca in Rachel's. And vice versa. She didn't even dislike the woman, she barely knew her, really, and Bianca had grown up in the same circle of girls so she knew what to say and what to avoid. She also sort of understood Rachel's initial decision to stay out of Amissa's life, or at least she tried to, and wouldn't hold it against the woman now that she was putting forth an effort.

"He's still very asleep, I think we tire him out with how often we check to see if he's asleep," Bianca joked, "Or awake. Or hungry, or needing a change. Or bored."

She twisted her fork around in the box of lo mein (living with Bertram seemed to make plates irrelevant) and took a human-sized mouthful of the food. The wireless was rattling off the commercials for some new hair smoothing potion as they waited for their show to begin. It was kind of silly, and the fact that they followed the soap opera so closely never left the flat, but Bianca liked the quiet time together.

"I think we've managed to become those kind of parents."

Bertram was never, ever going to tell anyone that he followed As the Time Turner Turned. Really, not even Zach was ever going to find out about this. He rolled his eyes as she spoke about them becoming 'those' parents and ate almost a whole spring roll in one bite, munching for a bit while he thought of exactly what he wanted to say next.

"I'd rather we be those parents instead of the sort that ignore their kids," he said with a snort, finishing up the rest of the spring roll. Plates just meant more dishes, and that wasn't something that he thought really necessary. He dropped his cheek to Bianca's shoulder with a smile, though. "And if it keeps Aaron sleeping then I'm going to continue to check on him until he's so exhausted he sleeps through the night," Bertram pointed out with a shake of his head, looking over to the screen to make sure the soap opera hadn't started yet.

"Besides, seeing you so fretful with Aaron is part of why I love you."

....

"That just came out, didn't it?"

Bianca nearly choked on her fork, and jerked away from Bertram out of surprise. She instantly felt guilty for it, but was too stunned to do anything more than stare down at Bertram and----had he really said that? It had been a year since Bianca had confessed to him that she loved him, they'd had a kid and the words had never slipped from his mouth, so---she blinked, jabbing her fork back into the noodles.

"That it did," she said, her cheeks red but a slightly put-off look on her face. She knew she shouldn't be, but seriously? That was how he was going to tell her for the first time? And it wasn't even telling her, it was just some off-handed comment he'd made while eating Chinese food. Bianca's eyebrows rose, letting her fool of a boyfriend know he was not going to get out of this one that easily.

"Just part of the reason, hm?"

Oh, he was really going to be in for it if he tried to back out of this one, wasn't he?

Bertram took a deep breath and huffed it out, putting down his carton of spring rolls for the moment so that he could turn and face her a little more properly.

"I know you think I'm a complete bleeding idiot for not saying it yet," he started, brow furrowed, "but I did have a reason! I didn't want you to think that I was just telling you because other people have been pressuring me to, or because I think it's what you want to hear."

He brought a hand over the back of his neck, rubbing hard for a moment.

"Look," he brought one hand into his robes, fumbling for something, "I know I'm going about all of this backwards and upside-down, but I love you, Bianca. You're the only girl who's ever really made me want to do anything except snog around and take care of Amissa. I know it's hard to put up with me, Bianca, and I just -- wanted you to know --" He brought his hand out of the pocket with a small ring and held it out to her, "--that I'm serious."

Bianca gasped, her hand hovering over her mouth in shock. How---he'd just had that in his robes? While they were eating take-out on the couch, he had just decided to pull out a diamond ring and tell her how much he loved her? That he was serious? Bianca's face was completely red now, her eyes watering slightly at the shock of everything, she could not believe---

She was wearing an ugly white tank top and a pair of his clean boxers, Merlin's beard! How could he propose like this? Though she supposed that she'd never actually imagined how Bertram would propose because it seemed like such a ludicrous idea even though Mira often gave her that look each time they talked about one of their friends' weddings or engagements or----

Bianca threw up her hands, letting them drop down to the couch in excitement, "Yes! Yes--yes, of course, Bertram!"

She pushed forward and grabbed his face, kissing him soundly. Holy shit! This was the best take-out they'd ever got, and their show hadn't even started!

Okay.

Okay, he probably should've prefaced that with 'this is just a promise ring, but', in hindsight. He furrowed his brows for a moment, considering correcting her -- but really, if he was ready enough to give her something that promised he was going to be with her for a good long time, what was the difference between that and an engagement ring? And it wasn't like they had to get married right away, didn't people take years to decide on things sometimes?

He was distracted from his thoughts by the kiss, and he wrapped his arms around her shoulders so that he could deepen the kiss.

"I know you probably don't want your hands covered during work, so you can just wear it on a chain or -- whatever." He managed a genuine smile for her. "You look beautiful, evidently. I know you're going to try and protest it, but I think you look better either in my clothes or out of yours."

Bianca leaned heavily into Bertram, getting the ring on her finger and just dazzled by it. She put her hand out to stare, just---just---it was so pretty, and unique, and it was so amazing to think that Bertram had gone out and picked it for her, that he'd thought about what she would like and---

"Fuck that!" she let out, swatting him in the chest, "I'll put some charms on it!" Bianca smiled up at him, feeling so overwhelmed with joy and happiness. She'd been completely and perfectly content with their situation, the one they'd been living in quite comfortably five minutes ago, but now. She couldn't imagine anything else, the idea of being with Bertram for the rest of her life was all that she wanted, him and Aaron and Amissa too.

"I'm never taking this ring off."
